M-17 in 34knts!

Just came in the door from a series race on Jason's M-17. Oh Boy! First time any of the locals have seen an M-17 really strut her stuff! Race comittee reported peak gusts of 34knots, yes knots, with sustained in the 28 region. One Catalina 25 backed out at the start as did 1 Santana 23. Another Santana 23 ended up not ready in time. That left us on Jason's M-17, a Catalina 25, and a Holder 20. We smoked the 25 by over 4 minutes , scratch!. The holder did beat us by about 6 minutes scratch, around 2 corrected. Then, the race comittee chase boat announced that the last boat to go around the leward mark (us) had to sail an additional 300 yards than the first boat (holder) because the mark was blowing downwind! Taking that into consideration we were probably right there in the hunt for a bullet. I think the ol' Monty caused a few jaws to drop! The Holder guys said they were hanging on by a thread , white knuckling it the whole way. The Catalina 25 rounded up with the jib poled out and ripped the track right out of the mast! Meanwhile , we were having so much fun we were just smiles and laughs the whole way, bashing into 3 foot waves all the way back. I will give you this though, the guys on the 25 were a lot drier than we were! The cockpit looked like a bathtub at one point, a bath tub that was 1/3 full. It was probably the most fun sailing I've done in years. At one point, one of the Santana guys was on the radio yelling "go fishboats!" (fishboats being what the local go fast guys have nicknamed the lapstrake hulled Montys). We had a camera but never had a chance to use it. There were a lot of pics being taken off the comittee boat. I hope to get some, if so I'll post. Jason finally got the high wind conditi ons he likes on a race day. We had her to a respectable 6.9 at one time reaching downwind with the swell but never were able to break the big 7. What an outstanding boat! Neither of us, although working our butts off on the tiller and the main to keep her from rounding, ever felt out of control and we were disapointed when any further races for the day were called off. OH well, everyone makes it home in time fo the Superbowl that way. Sure is nice to drop the sander, put down the resin, and remember why we're going through all this work on the 23. Sean

Hi Tod, Let me add a word of caution to my Cuttyhunk comments. There is a float plane that uses the back part of the harbor for a landing and takeoff area. You may want to check with a knowledgeable local - the fish store owner on the dock - as to the best place for an M15 to drop anchor in the shallow area, without having the seaplane buzzing across your cockpit.... That might cause you to spill the "sundowner". Connie

There's a listing on Craigslist, San Francisco, with pictures for a used Montgomery 7'11" for sale, complete with sail (Armstrong, sailmaker) oars, centerboard, rudder, oars, etc. $ 800.00 firm. Look under boats for sale. I almost went to see it but chickened out because I was afraid I'd buy it in a heartbeat then have to face my wife, Becky, when I got home with a boat on the roof of the van. Check it out. Hi Doug, Let me add some "goodies" to your list in the Buzzards Bay / Cape Cod area. In Quick's Hole, - a nice easy passage if you don't hit it with the wind against the tide - there is a lovely white sand beach on the southwest side of the Hole. We would stop there for lunch and a swim before continuing our run from Cuttyhunk to Hadley's. Cotuit is another spot with great discoveries, if you have a knowledgeable guide. After entering Cotuit and going under the bridge, on your port side is an island. It is possible to go totally around this island, coming out again just inside the Cotuit Harbor entrance, and behind a barrier sandbar that protects the waterway from Nantucket Sound. We did it once in our Tripp-Lentsch, and the trip was an eye-opener. Beautiful mansions; private docks; lots of lovely boats. I recall one house that had at least 5 boats tied up at their dock, all painted in the same color scheme; black hull, green bottom and a white boot top - with highly polished and varnished teak everywhere. There was about a 40' power boat; about the same size sail boat; (His and Her's?) plus smaller sail boats for the Junior members of the family. You know, smaller, like in the 30 foot range! A sight to take your breath away. On Martha's Vineyard, at Oak Bluffs, there is an old Methodist Camp Ground, where people would gather for the summer. About the beginning of August (date uncertain - check) they have their "Illumination" weekend, where all these little Victorian gingerbread cottages are lit with lanterns and candles. A great sight and a fun evening of walking among all the houses to see how each one decorated their home. At Edgartown Harbor, as you enter, on your port side is Cape Poge Pond. Tight entrance, but once inside, you have a large quiet expanse of pond for anchoring, and enjoying the view. Edgartown waterfront is brim full of boats, but if you want to see Edgartown, there is a Marina on your starboard side coming in, that might let you tie up for a few hours while you tour the town. Lovely shops (expensive) as you can judge by the size of the boats and the types of houses you see there. Across from the Marina is Chappaquiddick Island, of Ted Kennedy fame. Tarpaulin Cove on the Vineyard Sound side of Naushon Island is another nice spot for a stop and a swim or an overnight anchorage - long white beach and quiet. Woods Hole is wild water if you don't hit it at slack tide. With an M15 my choice would be to go through Quick's Hole - wide, no rocks; not a lot of traffic; and a lot less "sweat" than going through Woods Hole. Cuttyhunk: The inner harbor is dredged out for bigger boats. If you go in beyond where the mooring buoys are for the bigger boats, an M15 should find plenty of anchor space in the "thin" water area. I hope you have a dinghy along, because it's a necessity at places like Quick's Hole beach, Cape Pogue Pond, Oak Bluffs Harbor, or Cuttyhunk Harbor - and you can buy lobsters on the dock at Cuttyhunk. We'll be arriving and getting launched on Saturday and having a group dinner on Saturday evening, before heading into the islands on Sunday. Any of the Monty group out there is more than welcome to come by to visit, see the fleet, and join us for dinner. I would just ask that if you want to join the group dinner that you let me know ahead of time for the reservations. It's a great time to get acquainted and see all the Montgomery models on the water. If you're lucky, you might even be able to bum a ride for an afternoon sail on Fidalgo Bay! Larry

San Juan Cruise

It sounds great but it isn't going to happen for me this year. I hope to be in Washington by then, but just barely, and no time to organize for a cruise. I might try to come up and see you guys off, though, Anacortes is only about 1 1/2 hrs away. Bobbie

Dang it!

First week is our plan too if we can pull it off. I feel like the boat is diggin in her heels to stay in the back yard. She is experiencing "dry" for the fisrt time in 26 years and she like it!!! Did the stripper take off the anodization?
