Had a great Monday: Best friend, Phil Pirone (owner of Pro-Cure Bait Scents Company) and I went crabbing at the mouth of the Alsea River at Waldport, Oregon and came home with two limits (24) Dungeness Crab averaging two plus pounds each. If you've never eaten one... they have a sweet and flakey meat - yummy. Anyone drooling? Bill

Bill, dungeness crab is the reason I am giving for selling my 17. We spend all summer on the Oregon coast crabbing, when we used to spend our time sailing. Nice job on the picture albums. John in Tucson

Good Old Boat Mag

Howard, Thanks for all the ideas. I like the idea of the tubing for the pivot pin. I'll give that some consideration. As for the space above the ballast. I think it's just going to get sealed up and will have "air" in there. Maybe I should make it some kind of time capsule and insert a picture or two of myself covered in sanding dust or something!!! hahaha. If anyone ever ended up getting to see my picture they'd know what bonehead didn't fix the keel correctly. Guess I better put the pics in a ziploc bag! The cavity is sealed off from the hull itself and that's the way I want to keep it. I already tested this theory by filling the sump with bilge cleaner and letting it sit overnight. None was able to get into the keel. Yeah! (and my bilge is clean!) The idea of water ballast gives me a "MacGregor Shudder". UGH! Not gonna happen! (I hope) Still kicking around ideas. Sure wish all you guys were here sitting in lawn chairs (OK OK ...rock chairs) staring at this thing with me. We could have a few laughs, drink a few beers (diet cokes in my case) and you could console me when I break out into uncrontrollable crying fits! Tomorrow's another day closer.............................................to?

electrical diagram

Dunno if this will interest anyone, but I've uploaded a picture (screen capture) of the electrical diagram for Busca. Hopefully it will be readable. I saved it as a pretty large file (<300kb). The stuff in the lower right corner is a blowup (haha) of the electrical panel. Absolutely NO guarantees as to its viability. I just fried my second multimeter the other night. charting software

For those of you using the free download NOAA raster charts (available at http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/Raster/index.htm) These charts are basically regular charts that have been scanned in and "calibrated" so the software can tell you your lat/long and allow connection to a gps for real-time position indicating and waypoint exchange. There is also free software to use them: http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/Raster/resources.htm These free programs tend to have either fewer features or in some cases limited time of use (e.g. 30 days). I have the Maptech "Chart Navigator" (http://www.maptech.com/support/doc.cfm?docid=172 <http://www.maptech.com/support/doc.cfm?docid=172&CFID=14634764&CFTOKEN=1288 7735> &CFID=14634764&CFTOKEN=12887735) and also their "Offshore Navigator Lite", which comes as a companion to at least some of their waterproof chartbooks and another, not on the above list http://www.sping.com/seaclear/ OziExplorer also will allow viewing but has the big disadvantage of needing the user to first "calibrate" the chart, a very tedious process when you have over 6000 of them. 8^o A few nights ago I was "cruising" the coast of Alaska, the Chesapeake Bay, and the New England coast. The big shortcoming is that the downloads do not include Canadian charts. The Canadian government has elected to distribute electronic charts via a company in Newfoundland rather than make them available for free. You can buy the Canadian RNC charts if you so wish. Tod

Closing the keel shouldn't present that much of a problem. I'll grind and taper the sides of the cuts and the sides of the pieces I've removed and then layer glass over them in narrowing strips unitil the correct level is achieved. Then it's just a matter of fairing with filler and a long board and that'll be done. With respect to if I'll fill it to the top or not? Well, if I'm pouring shot , which is what I intend to do at this point, I wouldn't be able to fill to the top unless I actually went through the floor of the cabin. I REALLY don't want to do that. Also, I am going to send an email to Jerry and see how he felt about the 23's characterisitics and if he ever felt it would benefit from additional ballast. If not, there'd be not reason to add any extra weight other than what I have removed (with the exception of the 70lbs I want to add to make up for the weight of the swing keel being light) What I have considered doing is experimenting with casting a few ingots that would be correctly shaped to fit the contour of the keel. Then when I got to the top I could slide them into place from the "window" and seal her up. With the increased density of the lead I shouldn't have to fill it as high as it was filled with the steel to get the same weight, and the weight that I do install should have a lower CG. I really don't want to get into the "casting" business, though. I did, however, discuss it with the Hazmat supervisor at work yesterday and much to my surprise she said no problem! Huh? I thought for sure I'd get told NO way!. Go Figure. So I guess that concern was totaly unfounded. I'll continue to ponder this whole lead installation process and take as much input as I can get from all you guys right up to the time we start installing the lead. Nothing "cast" in stone (lead) yet! Thanks for all the suggestions, comments, etc. Keep em coming! Sean If I sealed her up right now I'd have the largest Montgomery dinghy ever built!
