Wayne, Doing anything, the first time is the hardest. After you have tried it once, it might not get too easy, but then you have experience, and you don't make the same mistake twice (or at least try not to...) Another comment: with your nose 12 inches from your work, wiggly edges are magnified as far as you are concerned. Not to worry. Just back away 20 feet from your boat and your lettering all looks very elegant and professional. That's the view everyone else has of your boat. Oh, there are also lettering stencils available at hardware or art supply stores, which you can use for your layout. This is what I used, except for my Plimsoll marks. Those were laid out; transferred to the sides of the dinghy and then painted by hand. Have fun, that's what it's all about. Connie

The last step is easy with the Toyota Decal. They supply a flexible plastic squeegee so the soapy water can be squeegeed out from under the properly placed decal. Probably use a soft plastic, pastry spatula for the squeegee, or something like that. Pretty slick huh?

When I received "Coyote" the name was hand painted on the transom, but very faded. I trailed the boat over to a graphic company, who took a picture of the transom lettering, transferred to their computer and did a vinyl full color graphic reproduction just a hair larger. I overlaid the new on the old and it was perfect. John in Tucson

Hi Wayne, I have never done any graphics on a boat, but I have laid out and hand painted the names on my old Tripp-Lentsch, the MICRO, the ComPac 16, and on all my dinghies, Optimists and other toys. On the M15 I used commercially available letters that I just applied to the boat. (because I also had to put on the Connecticut Registration numbers) The problem that you get into is the proper spacing of the letters, so the best way to do it is grab a piece of white butcher paper and play with your lettering layout. Then you can put the letters in a straight line or in an arc; play with the spacing until it "looks" right; and then use your paper product as the means to layout the actual lettering on your transom or boat side. On a transom, I try to make the name as large as possible, but that still works with the size of the transom itself. You want the name to stand out, but the transom is not a Billboard, and the name should be in a proper scale to the transom size. Legibility is increased if the spacing between letters is a bit larger. Art supply stores will have quite a selection of vinyl peel off lettering available in various sizes and font types, as well as in colors. I have stuck with white letters against my former red hulled boats. It makes for good legibility. Sail Number 605

I hate to admit this, but I've got so many photos I cant keep them straight until I put them in albums... I've got 4 great photos of sail number 605. Regretfully, I need just one more and I need to know whos boat this is. I recall we E-mailed at least once to speak about this M-17 being the first to have opening oval ports from Montgomery, but I dont remember much besides that. So, please Email me sail 605. I need another photo and some answers... What year is she? Thanks, Bill

Hi Rick, Congratulations on buying an M15 and learning to sail. With each succeeding sail it just gets easier and easier, as you learn how to control it. That's half the fun! As for a name... Remember that you have to apply the lettering, or do the layout and painting. My philosophy has been keep it short and simple. You don't want to call a boat "Octogenarian" or "Turboencambulator", it may be cute but is much to laborious to apply, and names that long require at least a 40 footer so that you have enough space on the transom. Of course calling it "IT" has the advantage of brevity, but it lacks originality. Something in the in the 5 to 7 letter range is what I stick with, but then, I'm lazy and not too good a lettering man. Good luck and enjoy the new toy. Connie Benneck ex owner of M15 LEPPO
