I totaly understand your rationale with respect to the AZ August sailing weather....or lack thereof! My neighbor and fellow sailor just built 2 plywood and 4x4 hoists to lift his Santana 23 so he could paint the bottom with the boat completely suspended. He painted it today so I imagine it will be hanging for a few days. Let me know if you'd like me to grab a few shots of it. It's literaly only 3 houses away. As for "calm, cool, and collected"..................................well.......(and I'm laughing at myself now).........................Thanks......I'm just glad no-one was around each time one of the "surprises" came to light. Keep your fingers crossed for me that I have no more major surprises left. I'm really just trying to get this old girl floating before my wife realizes what I spent her money on!!!! If you could see me wnadering around the back yard working on this thing you'd see I more resemble "Rain Man". "yeah, I buy my sandpaper at K-mart, yeah K-mart" or " 2 million 5 hundred and sixtyfour thousand 3 hundred and 25 punchings on the ground". Hope you saw and remember the movie or now I really do sound like an idiot! Sean

August Keel Repair

Sean, I have spent many a summer in Arizona and not to think that I am suffering from mental heat retardation; I plan to utilize the enclosed swamp cooled high bay area at work while the monsoons and electrical storms wreck havoc with the sailing weather. I have plans on a plywood-4x4-A-Frame sling (pair) that I might use to offload the boat and do the trailer and keel at the same time (sandblast-paint). Also, with the possibility of a forklift, it may (or may not) be easier. I suppose I could pick it up with the forklift and shake it until the centerboard fell out. Just kidding; but as calm and collected as you seem to be in light of all the problems, I'm not sure I would be so rational! Keep up the good work! BTW, the running dialogue and photos are a great tribute to your skill and perseverance. Obviously, many of the listers feel the same way! Steve M17 # 263 Glendale, AZ

lisence plate hinge

I've ripped off a few plates that hung below the frame of the trailer when backing up a hill that gets steeper suddenly. I think that the "Shenkel HInge System" would cure that idea as well. Nice work Steve! I am also in total awe that you are waiting for the summer heat to tackle the keel!! I'm over here working frantically 'cause I'm deathly afraid I won't have things done before the heat sets in!!! Heck, at the rate that I'm going backwards I wont be done for next Christmas! Sean

Keels and autopilot mounts

With the encouraging reports (?) from our friends to the West (Havasu Montgomery's) I have decided to embrace denial and trudge on with other projects. We have placed a bid on a forklift at work and I may try to utilize that for my keel job, hopefully later in the summer when it is too hot to sail. In the mean time I have borrowed some thoughts from other M17 owners and fabricated a hinging autopilot mount for the aging Navico Tillerpilot I own. I fabricated a sheet metal bracket and stiffened it with oak wood spacers. The bracket is mounted by a stainless steel door hinge that allows it to fold back against the coaming or you can push out the pin and remove it completely. Also working with hinges, I mounted the license plate to a piano hinge so that it would be free to flex while going to weather at 55 mph (on the trailer). decal trick

I've got one other trick I have used to apply vinyl decals. First, I trim the excess backing material on the top of the decal into a straight edge if its not already that way. Then I hold the decal/backing material up to the boat and position it where I like it. Next,I take a piece of masking tape and run it along the top edge of the backing material, half of it on the backing material and half of it on the boat. This make a sort of "hinge" that allows me to then flip the decal/backing material up and down. Now I, flip the decal/backing material up, and peel the backing from the adhesive side of the decal while continuing to hold the decal in the flipped up position. I then take a credit card or something similar, and while holding the bottom edge of the decal up, place the card on the tape hinge and slide it downwards. Maintaining the bottom edge of the decal in the "up" position as I slide the card down the hull and over the top edge of the decal allows it to push the decal onto the boat without and bubbles and the keep it aligned exactly as I had it when I taped the "hinge". Once I have slid the card completely down the decal I give it a good rub and then remove the paper backing which keeps the decal spaced properly from the front of the decal. If I am doing a large multi-letter decal, once I have placed the hinge on the boat I cut the decal into sections between the letters and place the sections on individually. As long as I don't distrub the hinge and I squeegee them from the hinge down, they will land in exactly the same place everytime. Just as an added precaution, I do mist a little lightly soaped water under them as well, like Bill suggested. If you use the soapy water, another trick is after the letters are squeegeed down and you have pushed all the soapy water out, spray and soak the spacer material with soapy water and let it soak for 5-10 minutes before peeling. It will peel off way easier. You will be less likely to dis-lodge the letters during the removal process as it takes a while for all the moisture to disapate from between the letters and the hull and they won't devlop their full adhesion for a while. I always try to remeber when pulling off the spacer material to try to peel it back over itself rather than pull "away" from the hull!! Anyways...for what its worth...that has worked for me.. :-) Sean

Good advice. It so happens my wife works at a sign shop that decals lots of cars. They don't bother with the soap; water does fine as a buffer. They line everything up by eye. Of course, they have lots of practice! If you step back and it doesn't look right, just peel it off, backing and all, and realign. A credit card makes a serviceable squeegy. The slippery soap will allow the decal to be moved for a small amount of time so as to center or align. The last step is easy with the Toyota Decal. They supply a flexible plastic squeegee so the soapy water can be squeegeed out from under the properly placed decal. Probably use a soft plastic, pastry spatula for the squeegee, or something like that. Pretty slick huh?

Many years ago (I think before I got my M15 in 1984) I saw an article in a yachting magazine or maybe SBJ on using gold leaf on boat names. It was pretty cool, so just now I searched the web to see what was around, and you can actually order gold leaf vinyl letters to put on your boat. Runs around $40-$45 per foot at this site. https://www.seamaidboatlettering.com/orderform.html You tell them the height of letters, the length of lettering, color, style, etc, and they send you the letters ready to put on.
