Fred, I didn't see any other replies on this, so I'll give it a shot. According to Jerry and the speed guys, the rule of thumb on both the M17 and the M15 is get the weight as far forward as possible. You want to have the transom out of the water as much as possible for good boat speed, as it causes drag. 3 inches seems like a lot, but you're carrying a lot of battery weight there. Are you using an electric motor? If you don't have an outboard hanging on the transom, that would explain the difference in trim. I wouldn't think you'd want to move the weight much further back than the mast support. Of course the point is you can get an M15 in the water and sailing pretty fast. Most of us on this list have done time rigging larger boats, and it's a pita. Thus we exult in our newfound freedom. M-17 ers, I have two, frame 24 batteries which I installed on a platform which is glassed in just forward of the mast support strattling the centerline and under the bunks. I haven't weighed them but that is about 100 lbs total. The problem is Dulce sits in the water heavy by the bow (about three inches lower in the bow) . I concluded that the two batteries are the reason. I temporarily, just to check it out, moved the batteries aft and on either side of the CB trunk. This helped the trim but did not correct it entirely. It is clear that the bow section displaces less water than the stern part so it is logical that heavy stuff be stowed aft. But even with the 100 lbs of battery further aft she sits with the stern about an inch or more higher than the bow as indicated by the factory located water line (boat fully rigged but with no humans on board). Does anyone else have this issue? Once I get a couple of folks in the cockpit everything evens out. Is that by design? Hi Sandra, My best time (18 minutes) is timed from the clock inside the truck. So my time is measured from the time I first get out of the truck to the time I get back in, ready to launch. That includes all the things you listed in addition to actually rigging the boat. I find the boom difficult to get in the cabin too, but if you lift the bow end as high as you can and keep the aft end low it will just make it through the companionway and then off to one side. This method works for me. Just reverse this procedure to get it out. Hi Steve: The original battery location on my M17 was under the port berth, but it was too small for the monster battery I just bought for Tiny Dancer.(1000AH- at least it's a monster to me) Since the battery weighs 55 lbs, I figure it's pretty good ballast, so I've built a high-sided box of epoxy and glass-covered plywood, and epoxied that along the centerline of the boat just forward of the mast support under the Vberth. The battery is a little harder to get to, but it should work a little better than the stock setup with regards to trim. It'll be harder to check the water in it's new location, but it's well secured and should stay in place. Battery Location M17

My recently purchased M17 (1977) has what looks like a battery box lid (group 24 size) glassed in the area where the battery would probably go. I am sure this is not a battery box lid as it is reasonably stiff; it just looks like an inverted battery box lid. Questions: Is this the factory setup for the battery? Will a battery box fit into this lid, or is the battery secured directly to this? Also, my boat has a deck fill and vent tube for a water tank, but the water tank is long gone (holes in galley present, but no hose or tank). Where was the factory tank located and how big was it? Hi Sandra, Once LEPPO is rigged for sailing - mainsail on the boom - I leave it there and stow the boom and sail as a unit in the cabin if I want to go to a different area. I have a boom cover that tends to keep things in place which makes life easy. Rick's comments about the boom being a tight fit in the cabin are echoed by me as well. You have to get the forward end of the boom as high as possible in the bow of the boat, and then the aft end will just clear the companionway and you can lift it out into the cockpit for rigging. I leave my shrouds attached to the hull, and just fasten them to the boom (while trailering) using Velcro strips around mast; halyards and shrouds to hold everything in place for road travel. Haven't had a problem with this system, and haven't lost even one Velcro strip while doing 65 MPH to windward up an Interstate. ...........this year I just changed to an all rope main halyard from the rope / wire arrangement that I had. This gives you a major advantage when raising the mast. I add about another 6 feet of line to the forward end of the halyard; tie the line to the bow pulpit, and now as I raise the mast, I can pull on the halyard, and with the mast vertical, cleat it off while I then leisurely go forward and attach the forestay. Sandra, I leave my loose footed main on my boom; don't use tie downs (Bob Eeg said they weren't necessary); leave my motor on its mount (okay per Bob, again); and have my boat loaded with everything (lunch, dog, etc.) before I leave home. My rig time would be 15 minutes, without rushing, if I didn't figure a new way to tangle the lines and stays on mast raising each time. Sincerely, John
