This brings up a good point... I move that we disallow disposable cars or launching with junkers that participants have no intention of using again. Everything else (commercial sponsorship, bikinis, naps) sounds good. Hi Gilbert, I've already started thinking about negotiating display advertising rights. My list of possible sponsors include Mobil 1 Viagra Heineken Beer, or out of deference to Jerry, - Fosters Kern Sails HONDA VW - tow vehicles WEST Marine Goodyear Tires Fulton trailer accessories I can see my competition coveralls now; Man, Indy drivers will have nothing on flamboyance compared to us in the International M15 Speed Rigging Competition. Hot-diggety! Do we get Jerry to wave the starter's flag for the initial event? Connie PS. My M15 trailer will be equipped with racing slicks, as will the tow vehicle. So there.....

Hi Bill, An excellent run down for the future rigging Competition rules. However, may I add: The ramp has to conform to the International M15 Rigging Competition Rules and Specifications, otherwise there may be a bit of hanky-panky going on - you know; short ramps vs. very long ramps, where the short ramp launcher obviously has a distinct advantage getting his boat afloat, while the long ramp person may have to back up for half a mile till his trailer tires are under water. This would be patently unfair. Therefore very specific ramp angles, widths, surfaces have to be specified to keep the competition fair for all. Of course, if contestants use different ramps, then we will have to evaluate all these various ramps against the Official Specifications, and depending on the ramp, access a "Ramp Launch Time Allowance" to the contestant. ~~~~~~~~~~~ I wish to apply for the bikinis and beer category; and as an old geezer, perhaps a mandatory short nap in the cockpit, midway during the rigging process also be a mandatory part of the competition. Comments? Now, for the pro M15 Rigging Competition category, will Indianapolis 500 or NASCAR type pit crews be permitted? Any limitations? .....no Bikinis? ....no beer? With special rigging tools and equipment; or just with a pair of needle nose pliers and split rings? Do all boat hulls have to have a racing number on the side? What size numbers? Is commercial sponsorship advertising permitted? I've already talked to Harry Potter about this, and he's willing to lend me some of his house elves if they can speed up the process. If I don't win he also told me that I could borrow his magic wand, and he would teach me some new spells........... So look out! This is getting serious. Connie M15 #400

Wow, who knew that a somewhat facetious question would warrant so much humor! But really guys you have gotten a bit sexist when you mention the bikini clad girls. Personally, it is the oiled down body builders in their speedo's who we ladies might find distracting. I love this list, not only do I learn some very useful information but get a big laugh too! I knew that the boom somehow fit in the cabin because the boat was delivered with it in the cabin but once I extracted it, it became too much hassel to fit it back in. I usually have too much stuff in the cabin to be able to work it back in. Time for a cool change! Sandra(Seawitch #617)

I keep getting this vision of a hyper-competitive individual barreling toward the ramp at flank speed. A great geyser of water erupts as tow vehicle first skids across the surface, then disappears into the inky depths with the trailer. Meanwhile, the boat breaks away and drifts free. Perhaps a minute passes, then a human head breaks the water's surface, and the competitor crawls up the boarding ladder like a half drowned rat. He staggers to his feet, gagging, and thrusts his hands skyward in triumph. Hi all, I was interested in the times posted re: setting up your M15. I haven't really timed myself . When does the timing start? From the moment you park in the lot at the launch ramp? Because at that point you are disconnecting the trailer lights, removing all tie downs from boat to trailer. Setting motor on the motor mount and stowing all the gear that needs to be moved to the boat from the vehicle. Or do you start timing from the moment you board the boat and begin raising the mast, and attaching the rigging? I would think that acurate timing would mean from time you arrive at the ramp til you actually launch into the water. I never leave my main attached to the boom, with it being loose footed, it doesn't seem to save much time. I also am unable to get the boom into the cabin so I stow it on top of the mast secured with bunge's, it rides well there, rode from GA to Utah with no problems. Thanks to Steve for the metal to metal information. All new to me but very valuable. And thanks to those who have responded regarding the set up of the jiffy reefing. I have all the parts on order and will be making that install very soon. West Marine has an anti seizing product, but it is not the one you guys recommended. Where do you get the Permatec product? Dear Ludicrous Monitor, 18 minute guy here, thanks so much for your valuable contribution. You have really straighten me out. I'd be interested to hear your comments about the folks who chimed in that they rig their boats 15 minutes. If I ever get to 15 minutes I'm going to use the extra time for my 'NEW HOBBY' of trying to chug as many beers as I can in 3 minutes. As far as sailing at the speed of walking, I can only say, "I can't walk on water.". Perhaps you can enlighten us on your experiences in the realm of walking on water. Thanks Larry, Yes, I am using an electric trolling motor and so far it has worked very well (though I still tell everyone interested ... or not .. that it is an experiment). It weighs about 17 lbs or the entire package including batteries weighs about 120 lbs. Probably not too far different than a small gas 4-stroke plus extra fuel just the location of the weight is different. She sails very nicely trimmed as she is with the batteries forward. With two medium sized humans in the cockpit the trim is about neutral. It just looks a bit funny to see this beauty nose down a bit on the buoy or for that matter when I am motoring solo. Under sail she seems to look and act right smart. I guess my real question is ... How do the other M17s float with all the gear on board ready for a short sail but absent the Lord and Master and the various mates? ( I was recently in Puget Sound and in particular in Quartermaster Harbor on Vashon Island (terrific wind!) and there in the Dockton public marina sat a lovely white hull M17. I didn't have time to look closely but she seemed to be sitting nice and level and, yes, Larry, she did have a gas engine hanging off the stern.) Thanks for your input. I'll continue fussing with this to see what combination works best.
