Hi All: Recently, I was involved in a potential swap of my M-17 'grey mist' and a good seaworthy M-15. Many of you may not know that Fern Ridge Lake (home to several Montys) is effectively closed for at least two years. This is the result of a very capricious set of on again off again decisions made by the Corps of Engineers ("We never met a straight line we didn't like"). At 62, I felt that if I was going to trailer-sail it should probably be a 15. So I contemplated a swap plus some cash. The deal fell through. Here is relevant excerpt from the owner of the M-15: We have set a price range for our M-15 to be between $5,000.00 and $6,000.00. She has a 4 hp Yamaha 2 cycle long shaft which is really a better motor for a 17 than a 15. So the price of our boat would vary based of if we included the motor and/or needed to deliver her. And any other negotiables. Fairleads for Roller Furler on M-15

Folks who've mounted a roller furler on their M-15: Did you use fairleads for the furling/reefing line? If no, how's the operation without such? If yes, what type of fairlead did you use and where did you mount them? What sort of cleat did you use for the reefing/furling line, and where did you mount it? I'll be rigging my CDI FF1 this weekend or next, and would prefer to learn from the experience of others, instead of certainly replicating others' (or even inventing new) mistakes! (M17 + CAL 20) It will take 5 to 8 hours to get out there, depending on which cove you end up at. There are plenty of cruising guides that talk about the Islands and their coves (and the dangers in them). And about the high winds you could incounter. Be prepared to reef the Main sail and perhaps drop the jib, Before the wind picks up and you scare any inexperienced crew by putting the rail in the water. Its VERY important to have some heavy duty anchors, (at lest two) anchor chain and line. Most coves, people will anchor bow and stern because a lot of the coves are small and or filled with other boats. There is never to much anchor line! (The nearest help is 20 miles away.) Here's some suggestions I have from spending time on the hook in the Keys. Marathon - has a big harbor with marinas. Food and shopping within walking distance. There are a few public ramps on Marathon and a good protected one behind the airport on the bank side. I launch there and leave my car with trailer there for several days without issues. If you want a waterfront room there try the Seahorse Motel. They have a ramp and your boat is docked 15' behind your room in a protected canal. It's located at the south end of the Marathon airport but not enough flights to make noise problems. Rental cars are had at the airport. You may want to stop at Looe Key on the way down and do some snorkeling. They have mooring buoys. Many species of fish and coral heads. Swimming depths are from 30' on the edge to 3' in the center. Newfound Harbor - has plenty of room and draft for big and small sailboats. Bahai Honda State Park - nice anchorage off the beach on the banks side. They also have a marina with limited supplies. Saddlebunch Key near Sugerloaf Key - There's a nice surge free anchorage for small boats just inside before you get to the US1 bridge. It's a few miles before Key West on the Atlantic side. When in Key West you can anchor off the Holiday Inn that is on the bank side just as US1 turns right on to the island. This HI also has a big parking lot for boat trailers. We stayed there in a waterfront room and anchored a Catalina 22 off the beach from the room. Summer rates were $125 nite for 4 people. This is a budget motel in Key West...closer to town it is 3x the cost while you still have to pay to dock and there is no trailer space. The city marina is just down the road and has an excellent ramp, but masts have to go down to get in there. Bill P.
