Hi All, Just visited the WW Potter Trailer Sailer Forum. They are having a pretty good discussion on autopilots. Go to: http://bbs.trailersailor.com/forums/potter/index.cgi I recall one of the Potter 19 owners (months back) who commented he was having directional problems at one time with his autohelm. Problem was corrected after he found the large magnets of his aft speakers was causing some interference. So, don't drill holes in the cockpit for speakers (like you would anyway) they may cause future concerns. So... it must work on small boats. However, I'd imagine it would be cycling alot on a boat without the directional stability of a weighted keel. So, it's my uneducated guess, it may actually work better on a M-15. If anyone does the modification... take lots of large, high resolution pictures so I can put them on the Photo Site, for all to see. For me, when I see someone else has done a project, it gives me the confidence (courage) that I may be able to do the same. P.s. I just got a CD in with lots of photos of lots of projects. I missed the thread where Jerry said that an automatic tiller system like the Autohelm wouldn't work for an M15. The 15 IS very sensitive to weight placement but I've moved around the boat with Sweetie at the helm and she didn't have to make wild adjustments to the helm. I had a Ray ST1000 on my shopping list, but now it looks like I need more info. Anyone had any experience with tiller autopilots on M-15's? Inquiring minds want to know. Don

Hi Bud, First you have to define what you mean by self steering.............. Hands off, so you can go below to get a sandwich or a beer, or.............. Hands off for 20 NM? Two totally different requirements. In the former case, I make do by locking the tiller in place using a Forespar Tiller Extender, or an even simpler method: a line from tiller to one cockpit coaming; and a bungee cord to the other side. This holds the tiller in place, and allows minute corrections, and holds course - after a fashion, but is subject to your weight shifting around - is very simple to make and does an adequate job. For long distance course holding, your next choice is; Sheet to tiller steering which works very well reaching (using the jib sheet as a signal input) Hard on the wind, you will need a signal input from the main sheet - but I haven't played with this on an M15. Naturally these sheet to tiller systems only work when you have wind. No wind, - no self steering. So, if you envision course holding both with and without wind; and getting home in a flat calm under power, then you have to go Autohelm, or some such electrical system. On my old 29' boat, I played with them all: first sheet to tiller steering; then built a wind vane steering system; but finally, because of 26 NM trips back home on Sunday afternoons in a flat calm, the final answer was an Autohelm. But then, with our engine running, power for the autopilot was not a problem. So, you first have to define how you want to use it. That determines the range of possible solutions. Connie M15 #400

Hi All Please share with me your methods of self steering on your M15's and M17's if you feel it would also be a good method to use on the M15. When I bought my M15 I planned on installing a tiller auto pilot but Jerry Montgomery told me it wouldn't work. I hope to have a system installed before the spring rendezvous. I use two shareware programs that are not free, but are inexpensive. The first is Gartrip. www.gartrip.de Gartrip allows waypoints to be displayed on a PC. The waypoints may be overlayed on a map if you scan one in. You can also click the map to set waypoints. The second is G7toWin. www.gpsinformation.org/ronh/g7towin.htm G7toWin has lots of file conversions, so that waypoints may be transferred between a variety of file formats. In particular, it allows CSV files created by a spreadsheet to be uploaded to a GPS. I make up a waypoint list in Excel. Since the Degrees and Minutes of most of the waypoints are common, I can just copy and paste those columns. I then create a column with the DEG-MIN-SEC parameter for transfer to the GPS. It is a lot easier for me to edit the waypoint data in Excel. That works for me. Steve Steve R. Works great. A whole lot faster and easier than the scroll and select method on the GPS itself. You can also do a whole lot more with it, but that's the main thing I was interested in. I recently bought M15 #172 for $3,500 with a rusted out trailer. I took the boat out and it sailed so well I bought it on the spot. I bought it on the spot because four people came up to us while launching to ask if the boat was for sale. The boat needed a lot of clean-up and teak re-furb. I have spent about $1,000 in clean-up trailer welding and painting plus about 60 hours of my time. Some said the boat value was around $1,300 according to a valuation book. The true price is what you are willing to pay for it. I'm happy with my purchase. If your bidding on the E-bay Monty, I would not go over $3,000. What a fight!

Hey Tod, Between normanlane and 2old2bob they drove the price up $1875 in less than an hour. Bidders on ebay can really get crazy. If they didn't run out of time there is no telling how high it would have gone. Chilepepper may have paid a premium price, but at least you can respect his technique, he only made one bid. I think I'm going to print this auction for use when I sell my boat (fat chance) to use as a bargaining tool. I paid $3300 for the boat and I feel like I got a great deal, by comparison. Maybe it's all the positive hype we all give these boats. I noticed that the Photo Site has 12,125 hits and I don't think it's six months old. Sounds like a lot of interest in Montgomery boats. Keep up the good work guys.
