You know, the best way to determine if you've got steel or lead in the keel is to crawl under there with a big whopping magnet. I'm "non-digital", but several of the group did use digital cameras. Perhaps some of them would be willing to send pictures to the web site and/or add some stories to the trip report I posted. M15 Ballast Question

I know that the M15 and M17 were originally produced using iron punchings as ballast. Documentation from Jerry Montgomery on MSOG indicates that the ballast was changed to lead in 1987 for the M17. Was the ballast changed to lead at the same time for the M15? If not, was it ever changed to lead? Well, I picked up my new boom cover today; the guy did a nice job with it. I should get a photo of it this weekend when I run Busca up to the lake. It is the same color as the boom tent. Now I'll be able to leave the boat more fully rigged. Unfortunately, that company (www.cmicovers.com) is closing it's doors Friday so I'll either have to find another shop or start making my own canvas. Maybe I could buy a sewing machine from him? Hmmmmm. Welcome, Jobst! Congrats Larry! Thanks for the tale, Doug. I'm kicking around Maine vs. the Lyle Hess Fest; doubt I could swing both. If I did go to the Chesapeake, would anyone be interested in a two week Maine cruise for '05 and would anyone be interested in some extended Chesapeake sailing (I would be sailing for a two week time period)? Some cruising company would be nice. If you haven't sailed coastal Maine, it's really fine sailing and in reasonably well protected waters if desired in the Penobscot Bay to Mount Desert Island region. From my reading, I think end of August/beginning of Sept is probably the best time of year. Earlier in the summer seems to increase the crowds and fog. I too have heard 1987, but I would want some confirmation before buying. I would look for one with lead, if possible. BTW, are you the Jobst that previously owned the Flicka 'Solar Wind'? All the Montgomery models were represented with Mark and Roberta Dvorscak in their immaculate older model M23 Faith, Fred and Lilly Shelly with their brand new M23 Sea Cutter on her shakedown cruise, Charless and Marjorie Fowlkes in their M15 Vagabond, Randy Graves in his M15 Dinky Boat, Jon Martin in his M15, and my M17 Tullamore. Also attending was former M23 owner Dick Lane in his Nonsuch 28 Swoose. Dick and Ann Lang showed up for the weekend rally but were unable to bring their M17 Sweet Pea. The timing for the trip worked out great. The weather was mixed, with some sun, some rain, some wind, and some calms, but the biggest advantage was beating the crowds. We were able to get dock space together every night in areas where you would be hard pressed to find a spot to drop a hook during peak season. We did anchor out one night by choice and were rewarded with a beautiful sunset. Our itinerary worked out just as planned, with time spent at Blakely Island Marina, Spencer Spit on Lopez Island, Blind Bay on Shaw Island, Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Stuart Island Marine State Park, and we even made it up to Sucia Island, the crown jewel of the whole island chain. But maybe the best part of the whole trip was the people. This was a terrific group to sail with and we had a great time getting to know each other. We shared several meals, explored the islands together, and as this was the first time there for most of us, shared the awe and wonder of this beautiful cruising ground. No wonder people all over the world know of the San Juan Islands. The sailing itself was sporadic, seemingly with wind either dead on the nose or shifting all over the compass with periods of calm mixed in, but with enough sailing each day so you didn't feel like you were just motoring through the islands. Probably about a 50/50 mix, which is pretty normal there. It was a real treat to be able to see the M23's side by side. Identical hulls, but very different rigs and cabins. Unfortunately, Sea Cutter wasn't completely rigged yet, and had to sail under main and jury rigged sprit sail only, so she couldn't really show her stuff, but "Thank you" to Fred and Lilly for coming all the way up from Arizona even though they weren't completely ready. At Friday Harbor, we met up with Scott Grometer (M15) who showed us his Flika and even went up Sea Cutters mast to free up the jammed roller furler. It was a unanimous decision among the group that we definitely have to do this again. So, be on the lookout for next years trip and don't miss it. M17 Rudder length?

Thanks Connie, I am still getting used being "married". She doesn't say much but she sure looks nice. Just a little long in the tooth but nothing I can't smooth out with time and patience. Lost the hitch and ball connection going over the Tehachapis. Tell everyone to always make sure that the tensioning nut (under the tailer hitch) is nice and tight. Make it tight enough so you can just barley lever the handle on top with your hand. Put a small amount of grease on the ball too, but wipe it off when you get home. If you ever get on the road over the summit on your way to Tehachapi (7 miles before, headed west of course) watch for some gouges in the slow lane, that's where the pucker factor got to about 9 on a scale of 10. Safety chains really work when properly attached....never go home without them !!! Fair Winds.
