just saw a jib / genny combo able to be lock at either the 100 or 140 position, any one have this type sail, how about other furling gear that works or some that to stay away from

Sandy, The picture of Fred and Lilly and their new M-23 on Bill's site was taken this past summer in the San Juan's. Fred and Lilly trailered their boat up for the event. They live in Green Valley, AZ. Having had a chance to join them this summer on the San Juan's sail, I learned a lot about trailer from Fred. In past years he has trailed up from AZ a number of larger boats, to include a Catalina 27 and Catalina 30! Wow Fred! After our June Monty get-together in the San Juan's, Fred and Lilly stayed on to cruise for several more weeks. They are wonderful people and have a beautiful boat. That boat in the photo isn't in Az. I suspect they keep the boat someplace else. Anybody know where? Sandy in Mesa, Az.

One thing I might add to Craigs post, if you're converting your existing genoa to use on a roller furler, you'll need to have a luff tape added to maintain sail shape when furling. If you try to furl a standard sail, it'll get too baggy as you reef, which of course is the opposite of what you want under increasing wind conditions. I'll second Craigs recommendation of the CDI. Never had any problem with mine. Hey, Bill . . . I think the furler mechanicals are simple enough, it's the genoa sail-modification that's the problem. With the CDI, you'll need the hanks removed and a bolt-rope sewn into the luff of the genoa. The boltrope will be fed into the CDI's furling foil, like your mainsail's luff rope is fed into your mast. Also, a strip of UV-resistant cloth will be sewn strategically to your genny, so that when furled, it's protected from the sun. I didn't have the UV-resistant cloth added because I use a sock that covers my furled genoa, so I'm not sure exactly how the UV protector is positioned. I hope I've used the correct terminology. I'm one of those "release the thingy and cleat in the whatchamacallit" kinda sailors: I WANT to use the correct terms, I've been through them dozens of times, they're just never available in my brain when I need them. I once had a 29' Pennant sloop with 20 yr old roller swaged rigging. We were in a hard blow in the gulf stream and two lower shrouds starting popping strands. It looked good until worked hard while plunging into big waves that actually shuddered the boat. Until that time the previous owner fairweather sailed in protected waters. You can't always look at the wire and tell if it is compromised. I'm not sure airplane wire rigging is a good comparison with sailboat rigging. A small two place airplane has massive overkill in wire size for the actual working load. It's a huge safety factor compared to sailboats. Out of all the dismastings I've seen or heard about from rigging failure, most have been forestays letting go.
