Hi Craig, Rustoleum has a Zinc Chromate primer that I used as a base for the Rustoleum white finish coats I applied. I chose white so that I can more easily see the trailer in murky water. Connie

Trailer Paint?

I am redoing my Flicka trailer (yikes!--a lot more work than the M15 trailer), and am curious if anyone has found a paint/coating that holds up well. The trailer will not be immersed in salt water (will load/unload via Travel-Lift), so my primary concern is chipping and UV exposure. My inclination is to use an epoxy primer such as Petit's 'Steel Lock' followed by a couple of coats of two-part polyurethane. Has anyone tried this approach. Hi Scott, I used Rustoleum on my M15 Trailrite trailer, and after several years use, in and out of the water (fresh), and sitting in the open all winter long (just boat under a tarp), the paint has stood up very well. No problems: no complaints: and I would use it again to do a touch-up job. Connie

Hi Jeff, I agree with Tod - it would have to depend on your sailing area - tidal currents, river currents, nomimal wind, etc. and your attitude towards time. In my case, my M23 came with an old two-stroke 9.9 Evinrude that, while very heavy, does the job. There have been times when I have to get home and end up motoring, sometimes through less than the best conditions, for most of a day. The 9.9 has the power needed to get me through just about any condition and still make 5 knots, which in my case is important. For my situation, the 9.9 works for me and my only consideration for replacing it would be to move to a four-stroke. When I renovated Umiaq's trailer it turned out to be very difficult to find a galvanizer, so I ended up with a company that offered some sort of heat-applied powder coating. It turned out reasonably well -- although perhaps less robust than galvanizing. I am impressed with the new Yamaha four strokes. Honda is one of the few to make an extra long shaft if that is a factor.
