Hi Wayne, Don't get complicated. Think of the laser as a knife cutting a section. You set it up to do the water line. The laser just "cuts" a section from the bottom of the boat at that elevation. It doesn't care if the hull is curved or if it is a strait vertical surface. You are asking for a section at X height, and the laser gives it to you. The water doesn't care what the hull surface curves are either. The hull sits in the water at it's load line. That's what the laser describes. Connie

Ah, Joe, Rub it in............ we can take it! If and when spring comes, I am going to put a proper water line and boot top stripe on LEPPO. The former owner in Florida used his paint brush a bit too liberally, and has bottom paint way above the real waterline. I was scratching me head as to how to draw a new waterline, when I saw an ad in Radio Shack for a laser level. That's it I thought - a laser level and then I can spot points all along the waterline and then connect the dots for a nice smooth line. Same for the boot top line. But, Radio Shack sold out their "special" offer in minutes, with no rain checks. Now I got a small laser lever from Lee Valley Tools - $19.- and will start to experiment with it as soon as I can find the boat in the snow pile. Enjoy the trout Connie

Hmmm..you could run the motor in a water barrel for a few hours before installing on your boat. I run my Seagulls that way every spring tuneup. After 3-4 hours of barrel running time, put it on your transom and motor around at varying speeds for a few more hours, and you should be OK. Harvey/ Ga M-17 Stargazer #294

Hi Craig, A few more thoughts from my point of view. On an M15 you aren't going to run the motor at much more than half throttle to achieve hull speed. Any more, and you just dig a big hole in the water and make waves. The waves show you how much horse power you are adding to the water. Fewer waves are better.......... All motors have a little vibration. Single cylinder a tiny bit more than two cylinder engines. It's only when you get to a 6 cylinder car engine that you find engineering harmony and a totally balanced engine. Manufacturers do a good job of balancing engines. My single cylinder Honda is delightful: no nits to pick. I have a Fulton lift mount - installed last year - and have no problem with the engine and vibration whatsoever. If you are only using your engine on the M15, there is no need for a break-in period. That idea is to keep you from taking it out of the box: putting it on the stern of the boat; filling the boat with 6 people; and then trying to pull a water skier.................. i.e., full bore operation without a break-in period. Since you are only using it to move your M15, and half throttle is about full hull speed for the M15, you are well below recommended break-in RPMs for the engine. So, just hang it on the stern, and if you have no snow, go out and play......... Connie

San Diego

A friend of mine who use to live in the San Diego area told me the bay was a great place to sail. It hasn't been on any list of places to cruise (sail) that I've seen. I will have a week or so free while I'm on the west coast and I'm looking for some other places to sail. Anyone out there have personal knowlege of the bay or recomendations, pro or con? Gordon, Mine is the cheap economy model - no switch to convert the dot to a line.. But I'm reasonably skilled at "connecting the dots" Make enough dots and you almost have a solid line! Connie

Ron, The paint used for the boot top is a function of what it's purpose is supposed to be. For boats in salt water, the paint manufacturers make boot top paint that is anti fouling. If you operate predominantly in fresh water, you can use almost anything. If you have your boat hanging from the rafters, and have clear access all around the boat, find an old skate board. Erect a vertical post on the skateboard, and then clamp a pencil to the upright, such that you can move the skate board around your shop floor and mark the water line with the pencil. I used that method with a Bolger NYMPH dinghy I built, and it worked great. Connie

Gordon, It's always the same. I thought I'd solve the problem by swinging the dot (that's all my laser puts out), and you come along with one that makes a whole line! New and improved! But, now that I have mine in house, I'll have to live with it and make it do what I want! Connie

Giles, That description is going to take at least two Martinis - stirred, not shaken, before I can comprehend your analysis. I was just going to set the boat up on a flat surface - parking lot. Get my current "actual" water line horizontal, by moving the trailer tongue jack up or down, and then with the laser on a ladder about 20 feet away, and the laser on a lazy Susan, rotate the lazy Susan and the laser to mark the water line. Maybe I think it is easier than it really is, but I will solve the problem when spring arrives. Meanwhile thanks for convincing me that I need a second Martini. Connie
