The truck carrying Dulcibella, my shiny new Montgomery 17, reached Gainesville (FL) late this afternoon. Boat and trailer are in excellent condition. We started getting compliments even as the unloading proceeded in a mall parking lot. At home, we found she is just a hair too large for the garage. On to Plan B for storage... Now for some boat rigging. The mast/boom package was nicely bubble wrapped, so tomorrow will be like an early Christmas, with presents to open. Thanks, Montgomery Boats! David Fann M17 Dulcibella

Cool Flashlight

Greetings, Just want to pass on a "cool" find. If any of you are interested in little flashlights that are sized just right for your Montgomery I have a suggestion. I found this at my local Walmart and being an official flashlight aficionado I had to try it. Made by DORCY and called COOLBLUE. It's a single, focused LED that provides a slightly blue tinted light beam. It runs on 4 AA batteries for a stated 200 hours, and it is just hand sized. IMHO it is just right for a life jacket pocket for night sailing or over nighting on the boat. The best part yet, it is WATERPROOF and FLOATS, and will go home with you for just at $8.00, that includes your first set of batteries, and has a "lifetime guarantee". Hi Deena and Harvey, I carry a small Bruce, with rode in a rectangular vented plastic box in my port sail locker. I have a second, Danforth type with rode there too. My final insurance policy is the small Fortress with chain and rode in the forward compartment under the berth where it's weight does the most good. I know that with the M15 that's vast overkill, but from my big boat days I learned you never can have too many anchors of different types to suite different bottom conditions. One anchor is never enough. What do you do when a powerboat drives across the rode and cuts it? ...or someone trying to anchor close to you manages to wrap your rode around his propeller, leaving you and he to drift around helplessly? No, two anchors are the minimum (each with chain and rode), and a third, if a front blasts through the anchorage at 2 AM with 40 knot gusts, makes sure that you at least stay where you want to stay. When I anchor, (lunch, snooze, bird watching) I just open the sail locker; pull out my Bruce and drop it over the side. There's no need to go forward to drop the anchor. Once the anchor is on the bottom and starts to dig in, the M15 will swing around, bow to wind, and then you can leisurely walk forward and cleat off the anchor rode on the bow cleat. When dropping the lunch hook on my old boat, I did the same. From the cockpit: then walk the rode forward and cleat it off, as the boat slowly pivots into the wind. There is also no law that says you can't anchor with the stern facing the breeze, but this should be reserved for calm conditions, otherwise waves hitting the stern may splash, making for a damp lunch! For Jerry Montgomery: Jerry, way back in August of 1998, you responded to a message from Connie regarding water leaking in on his M15: You wrote: "it could be leaking thru the joint between the deck and the top of the cb trunk. On the very early 15's the liner came up almost to the bottom of the deck and bonding the deck to the actual top of the trunk (not the liner) was difficult to do well and even more difficult to inspect. ... Contact me for a solution after determining the problem. Jerry" I've pretty much narrowed down my leaking problem to this joint--I've got the centerboard out and the boat up on stands, and I can see up there to the joint real well; it appears that it may be slightly misaligned, and possibly incompletely sealed.--I can see it well, but it's going to be damn hard to reach. If you have any hints or suggestions for repairing this joint (as you intimate in your note) I'd be really grateful to hear them. Thanks for your help! Steve McClellan M15 #152 Chicago Area

Jerry, what in your opinion would be the better board? I was suprised a few months ago by your comments regarding the shape of the rudder being so critical; does this also apply to the board shape? How would the weight difference change the sailing characteristics of the boat? I had the cast iron board removed, sandblasted, and painted when I first bought Wild Hare, but would still be interested in an improved model.

Steve, I have the same bulkhead that you see. It keeps thing in place in the sail locker. This bulkhead - about 1 foot high is located on both sides of the boat. My port sail locker, however, has a wall on the inside side, i.e., going from the side of the cockpit seat wall to the bottom of the hull. This keeps thing in the sail locker from rolling under the cockpit sole, and disappearing forever! Now that I cut out the starboard side shallow locker, there is no wall down there. All that is located there are the styrofoam flotation logs. So, the new storage area is only good for large, easily reached and grabbed objects; which is why I have my Bimini, my extra cushions, boarding ladder, etc. stored there. Incidentally, I drilled holes on each end of the shallow locker; threaded about an 1/8th inch line through the holes, put on a piece of plastic tubing as a handle, and tied off the lines on the outside of the shallow locker. This way, I have readily accessible handles for lifting out the locker when I wan to get at the "goodies" that are stored underneath. If you are thinking of doing this modification, let me know and I'll give you more detailed instructions on how I did it. No sense of reinventing the wheel! Tongue Weight / Towing

Just a few thoughts on the tongue weight comments. I have run across the truck scales with my 99 Subaru Outback and my M-15 on the Trailrite trailer that it came with. Boat and trailer came in at 1400 pounds, with very little in the boat; the sail bag, a paddle, boat hook, cushions, life jackets, porta-pottie, sheets and docking lines. The OB, trailer spare tire, and the ground tackle kit were al in the back of the car. With the trailer unhooked from the car, I can lift the hitch enough to readily move the trailer wherever I want to. I would guess the tongue weight to be only 60 - 80 pounds. I will have to weigh it when I get home to check. The Outback is rated to pull 2000 pounds and the hitch is rated at 250/2500 (tongue weight/trailer weight), and on the road it doesn't even know the boat is back there. The car was purchased with pulling the boat as a goal. I consulted with my mechanic re the auto VS manual transmission question. His recommendation was to go with the Auto Transmission because it is kinder to the engine, and with an accessory transmission cooler and regular maintenance it should last for many years. My preference was for the standard transmission which in my Toyota Tercel 4WD wagon has lasted for 475,000+ miles, with out a new clutch, trans, or engine, however, I trust my mechanic's opinion. The Outback is a 4 cylinder, I wish it was a 6, but it still gets about 22 - 24 mpg and seems to run easy with Pelican in tow. I wish I had a transmission temp gauge but Subaru did see fit to have an idiot light that will come on if the trans heats up. Guess we will know how well it works and how right the mechanic is when I get a few hundred thousand miles on the combination. The Outback is a bit low, and when retrieving the boat, it usually comes just an inch shy of getting tight to the rubber vee on the winch post. It sits solid on the bunks and doesn't appear to have moved when I get home. I'm thinking maybe I need to move the winch post aft to meet the boat where it usually sits. The trailer does not have a tongue extension and that is coming soon and will probably help with getting the boat farther up on the trailer. This is my limited experience, ( except for my 475K miles on my Toyota ), and hopefully it might help someone else along the decision path. Harvey & Deena H M-15 #348 Pelican Walla Walla, WA

We towed our M15 to the bay area two years ago for the Cruiser Challenge in Oakland with a '91 4WD Toyota. It's a 5-speed, but I kept it in 4th so as not to lug the engine. It won't leap long hills in a single bound, but if you're patient, you'll get there.
