A few quick things. 1) I appreciate those who have expressed an eagerness to give me money. Actually, the begging will begin in March, and I'll send out an e-mail at that time. Meanwhile, invest your $5.00 in something solid, maybe Enron and K-mart, like I did 3 months ago. As a result of my investment acumen, I'd like to request a little more for the web site this year, about $900 each. ;) 2) To earn my money, I have created a new database called the MSOG Book List. Please add your favorite books, the ones that have been discussed on the listserver, so we can start our own little reading list about sailing and the sea. I think it's a good idea to confine the list to those general topics. You can find the link under "Other Resources" on the MSOG site. The book entry screen is simple and should be self-explanatory, and I've already added Hiscock's "Cruising Under Sail" to get us started. I'll refine the program as more get added. There's still a lot of winter left for reading. 3)I have marked a lot of e-mails from the past several months to follow up on. Now that things are lightening up at work, I hope to get to those very soon and add a whole bunch of new stuff. 4) I think I've made all of the database corrections, additions and deletions that some of you have sent to me. Please e-mail me again if I missed making your change. 5) Someone on the listserver was asking after the article about the M-15 trip to Hawaii, that story is on the MSOG web site under "See the M-boats", then "M-15". Had that, and a new furling 140 genoa made by Mack Sails of Florida, and the result is a lot more speed, especially in the light summer airs on the Chesapeake. The full battens make it somewhat easier to keep the main under control when it's down, although the lazy jacks still need work. Mast - Anodizing

Greets: It's a snowy day here in Oregon, and while puttering in the shop with my woodstove keeping things toasty, I started pondering if there is a way to clean up worn anodizing spots on my mast, without making things worse. The wear is from the stays, as the original owner would bungie them to the mast while trailering. I guess I could go to a two part epoxy over the top, but that seems like 1) overkill, and 2) excessive work. Your thoughts please. Regards, Steve

GPS errors

This summer in late August I was cruising up the Tred Avon river in a light fog with a good 75 yards visibility and light winds. There is a marker that sits right on a Longitude line on the chart. I was running down the same longitude line and was planing to turn at the mark. I saw the dreaded shore first and finally found the the marker 100 yards off the longitude line. The land was actually on the longitude line as displayed by the GPS. The chart is 3 yrs old. Would anyone know what might have been going on? Could the GPS be that far off? So far most of the discussion has been on "where". For those who have to schedule vacation time at work, maybe "when" is the more urgent issue, and "where" can be decided later. If we are considering two rallys (inland and coastal), it would be nice if we could spread them out such as early summer / late summer so it might be possible for some (me? ;-) to go to both. Mark and Lloyd, you guys both mentioned plans to do the San Juans this year. Any idea when yet? Larry Y.

Harvey, I wasn't thinking too hard when I suggested a "get-together" at one of big lakes in eastern washington. About the only two that come to mind are Moses and Chelan. I just thought I'd throw the idea in the hopper -- Idaho is just a bit too far for me to go from the Seattle area unless it were planned as a serious vacation. Although, I'm sure Idaho lakes are way more scenic as would be the San Juans. If a San Juan Island trip is a possibilty, my preference would be to do it in short jaunts rather than trying to make Friday Harbor in a day from Anacortis. In fact, I'd probably avoid San Juan Island all together -- nothing but a huge tourist trap IMHO. I'd go for a destination on one of the less popular Islands. Maybe to a marina that the less adventurous or time-restricted could get to by ferry. That's about the only input I have on that one.
