Some development suggestions for L-systems

I have been familiarising myself with Fractint's L-system types for about 3 years now, and while I still have a long way to go, I have some ideas about how to further develop this part of the programme. It isn't, perhaps, used nearly as much as some other parts, but could still stand some modifications, which might attract a new set of users. The first improvement would be to allow for colour *vector* output, e.g. dxf or ai, instead of only bitmap output. L-systems are linear-based, not pixel-based. (I have a mutant version of Fractint sent to me by one of Fractint's developers which allows for dxf output, but without colours. This has enabled me to render L-systems as large as 1 GB, which fortunately compress to about 4% of their size when imported into CorelDraw and saved there!) A probability function would allow for more realistic-looking trees and other living forms to be emulated. For example, the option of setting a probability that any given part of the L-system string would occur, be it an angle change, size change or whatever. This seems to be a feature of some other L-system generators I have read about in books on fractals. I suppose that there would have to also be some way of ensuring that every somewhat "randomly" generated L-system could be produced more than once, e.g. by recording the actual variables used in each case of allowing the probability function. if...then, etc. could also be incorporated. If the line(s) resulting from iteration x reach or surpass an angle of y in relation to the horizontal or starting angle, do z: introduce an alternate text string command. If the total number of line segments resulting from iteration x reaches number y, do z; etc. A final modification, which is rather specialist so far but again which could enlarge the group of L-system uses, would be to allow *animations*. Currently, by using d instead of f, and setting angles instead of using Angle x, angles can be varied to the limits of Fractint's precision, allowing one L-system to mutate into another. The start and end parameters could be set, along with the intervening number of pieces to produce, and then the programme allowed to generate the whole set of pieces, which collected together would form a smooth animation from starting form to finishing. Actually writing a separate L-system for each piece would not then be necessary. I have many pairs of L-systems which would benefit from this proceedure. (IFS types and, I suppose, most fractal types could also be treated similarly. There are already a number of fractal animators out there; but can any of them handle L-systems?) FOTD 04-02-02 (A Fractal Hiatus [4])

FOTD -- February 04, 2002 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's simple image is named "A Fractal Hiatus". I gave it this name because it is the last FOTD that I will be able to post until I finish the job of organizing and producing that long-talked-about FOTD CD. There is simply too much work involved to efficiently handle both the ongoing FOTD and the FOTD CD. I have no idea how long it will take to finish the CD, but if no new problems come up, I should have it finished in a few weeks. When the CD is ready, I will resume the ongoing daily FOTD. In the meantime, I will continue reading the lists and will post an occasional comment on the progress of the CD, or whatever comes to mind. But right now, I've got a pile of serious work in front of me, so I'd best get started. The parameter file of today's image runs in 7 minutes on my P200 machine. FOTD -- February 03, 2002 (Rating 3) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Gathering and organizing the material for the upcoming FOTD CD is proving to be a more difficult task than expected, which I suppose is not unexpected. I present today's weak effort as a little scene I found with almost no effort. There's not much in it to speak of, so I'll let the image speak for itself. The cats were happy to remain indoors -- 39F 4C is far too cold a temperature for such intrepid felines. As for me -- I've got tons of work to do on that CD. The new FOTD's might appear at somewhat irregular intervals while I'm busy, but I'll be here every day reading the lists, which is not much of a task. Hopefully, the next FOTD will appear in 24 hours. If not, it won't be too far off. FOTD 02-02-02 (The Primary Colors [6])

FOTD -- February 02, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: There are three primary colors -- red, green and blue. And then there are three more primary colors -- red, yellow and blue. The first are the additive primaries, or RGB colors of a fractal on the screen; the second are the subtractive primaries, or CMYK colors of a fractal on the paper. Today's image has in it some very strong primary colors of both varieties. For this reason, I named it "The Primary Colors". The rating is only a 6. The formula behind the image is a very simple one -- Z^2.003+C, made more interesting by displaying the part of the infinite fractal that lies 1029 turns up the logarithmic hyperspiral. At this lofty height, the parent fractal resembles the Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees, so that the split along the negative X-axis cuts the East Valley area, which at the same time begins to broaden. The midget in the image lies deep in this fractured East Valley. The 15-minute render time is barely bearable. But impatience can be avoided by letting Scott do the rendering and downloading the image from his web site, located at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> The fractal weather Friday featured rapid and extreme changes. The day began with dense fog, which cleared to a partly cloudy sky by 10am. A light shower passed over at 11am, then it was partly cloudy until 3pm, when a brief but strong rain squall arose. The day ended with clearing skies, high winds and falling temperatures. The high of 75F 24C was comfortable enough, but the fractal cats' outdoor time was limited by the changeable conditions. It's the start of another week-end here at Fractal Central, and I've got a lot of work to do to get the files for the FOTD CD in order. The sooner I get started, the faster progress I'll make. Fractals and copyrights

Hello Im posting a copy of a message I just posted to a fractal email list of 300 members in response to someone called Cindy Meyers. However my message was moderated and didn't make it too the list, because appartnetly the topic is a powder keg. A few messages on the topic have been discussed on the fractalus lists. So again just to explain I resisting my censor and posting a copy of my message for another list to this one. It would be appreciated if someone could copy and paste my message to this list so my message is heard. - - - - <<Some members have mentioned their growing reluctance to send UPR's to the list because of the people who don't believe that copyright applies to UPR's being sent over the internet.>> You mean, when someone has an ORIGINAL in their fractal program and they post a COPY into an email program, which then makes a COPY on the internet. So you deliberately make 2 copies of information you created. Then when everyone else on this list reads your message, they make a COPY on the local hardrive. Did you still have the original, what was stolen? Are you worse off? Is someone else richer? Can you begin to see how silly copyright looks when we have the internet. Government must find another basis for intellectual property rights. Its mass civil disobedience otherwise. <<Often they speak of freedom of information as some kind of justification.>> You have no idea about information and intellectual property, do you? Have you studied informatics? <<But UPR's aren't information, they are a work product>> What? Of course these files are information. INFORMATION: The total collection of data which has been organised so it is in a useful form and can be used to produce an idea, condition or situation. (from collins dictionary of computer terms) UPR's are therefore information. Data describing colour, shape, etc. Its the idea of what I call ART - not work product. Music is of course information which describes sounds. <<Saying that you're giving people permission to take your UPR's and use them anyway they want to because you've sent them to the list, is like saying you're giving your permission to a car thief to steal your car if you park it on a public street.>> No, no. Thats completely false. When you steal someones car, they are clearly MUCH WORSE OFF. However, making a digital copy, occurs at a negible cost. Our information technology allow for the 10000 th copy to be made at next to nothing. Physical property such as my car (if I was a dirty motorist, spewing tonnes of co2, into the atmosphere, taking a good atmosphere away from the people living in the future, cruel, tyrant - but I am not) is not able to be COPIED at no cost. Therefore in reality when you stop or object to people making digital copies, you are being cruel, because we all know sharing is best. I reject copyright holders. Profit is an inferior motive for creating art. I have a different value system than the music industry. I want no-one to profit from information. I would never pay for a newspaper, magazine, book, video, cd or any other mass media in a physical form. We dont need mass media for mass content. I'd rather not purchase disposable media on ecological grounds as well. I'd rather use my information technology. I want to see a world inspired by the diverse creativity of our cultures, rather than the crass stench of americanisation. The abandoning of copyright will bring a new period of rapid intellectual development at a global scale. Art and music will flourish in infinite abundance as information technology presents rampant piracy, practically limitless content for nothing. <<The reason that I continue to send UPR's to the list even knowing the risk involved is because if I stop doing that then the idiots win.>> You seem to be taking something personally? <<I would be allowing them to have some kind of control over what I do and don't do, I'm not willing to live that way. FOTD 01-02-02 (A Perturbed Spiral [5])

FOTD -- February 01, 2002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's quickie image of a perturbed Mandelbrot set is a return to the type of fractals that I was producing 10 years ago. The ghost bud in the background and spectacular foreground spiral are things that appear very frequently in the perturbed M-sets. I have explained this 2-layer effect several times in past FOTD's. All of the explanations will appear on the FOTD-CD which now appears on the way to actual realization. I have recovered all but 6 of the FOTD discussions and even some fractal stuff that I posted before I started the FOTD. Today's image is named "A Perturbed Spiral" purely as a description. I rated it an average 5 because I've done this kind of image so many times before. The render time of 6-1/2 minutes is but a modest time to wait for the 5-rated image to appear, but if this time is not modest enough, the finished GIF image can be picked up in a few minutes from Scott's web site at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> The fractal weather Wednesday was sunny and 75F 24C. The cats were happy. Thursday it was drizzly and 43F 6F. The cats were not happy. It appears that today will be cloudy and warm with showers. The fractal cats' ultimate mood remains to be seen. My mood, which is fairly good already, will improve when the necessary work is finished, and I can get busy on the FOTD CD. I'll return in 24 hours with the next quick FOTD.
