FOTD -- February 25, 2002 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Progress continues on the upcoming FOTD CD, which will contain fractals and discussions of times past. But even as the disk progresses, the ongoing FOTD continues to languish, now appearing only every third day. As I struggle through the old e-mail files, I wonder how many CD's I will sell. Yes, I will need to sell the disks -- it takes time to copy a disk and blank disks cost money. Having a disk mass-produced is also costly, but I wonder how many I will actually sell. Being an optimist, I expect to sell not hundreds, not thousands, not tens of thousands, but tens -- if I am lucky. The questionable success of the CD project is not the only concern. While filtering through the masses of discarded e-mail, I cannot avoid re-reading the old FOTD discussions. And as I re-read them and compare them with the recent discussions, I notice a fire in the old ones that is missing in the recent discussions. In those old discussions, I often discussed things such as the curiosities of the fourth dimension. I also frequently expressed my metaphysical beliefs, and as expected, I was soundly disagreed with by those who place their full faith in the methods of physical science. The debates often grew quite lively, though never developed into a full-blown flame war. Then, I eventually grew bored with repeating the 4-D curiosities and engaging in debates that have no solution, and the FOTD settled into its current routine. The daily weather and antics of the cats replaced the polytopes and spirit worlds, even as the fractals settled into an endless series of varied but still similar quadratic midgets. And this is where the FOTD currently stands. Perhaps I need to return to the ways of the past. Today's image, another midget, continues the lethargic trend. It is a scene in the fractal created by the formula: -0.25(Z^5)+0.5(Z^4)+(Z^3)-2(Z^2)+C This particular expression has one of its critical points at zero, so no non-zero value needed to be entered as the p5 parameter. I named the image "Four-Part Mandeloid" as a cataloguing description. Consider the name the same as you would a name like "Concerto in b-flat". The image is not quite up to the current average, so I could rate it at only a 4. The render time of almost 40 minutes is a bit much for such a below-average image. Thomas growled from the porch as the shadow of an unwanted tomcat passed through the brush behind the yard. It was near perfect for me also. I spent much of the day working on the CD, which is near 15-percent finished, and if all goes well, (which is unlikely), will be ready by sometime this summer. AMD Athlon XP vs Intel Pentium 4

FOTD -- February 19, 2002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Three days have passed since the FOTD last appeared. In that time, I have been working on the upcoming FOTD CD, which is now about 18 percent complete. (The inevitable unexpected problems have not yet appeared, so the disk might actually be closer to 10 percent complete.) In addition to the CD, I have been working on a MandelbrotMix3 formula, which instead of mixing 2 powers of Z, as the M-Mix4 formula does, mixes 4 powers of Z. As of this time, I have done very little work with this new formula, but I have done enough to realize that it has much potential. I have named today's image "New MandelbrotMix" because it marks the first appearance of the new formula, unfinished as the formula is, and it also introduces the next class of fractals, which, mixing 4 powers of Z instead of 2, will presumably have more variety. These new fractals will often have several critical starting points. At this time however, the different critical points must be calculated and entered manually. I have not yet figured how to get the formula to automatically calculate the multiple critical starting points and initialize Z to these values. Today's image rates an average 5, making it a bit slow when rendered from the parameter file. The sun peeked above the holly trees just enough to give them a few spots of midday warmth to chase. The temperature of 46F 8C was a bit chilly however, especially when the sun dipped behind the trees again, sending the dynamic duo scurrying for their warm beds indoors. A fine counter example! In general, turning periodicity on will speed up image generation. I have on the back burner a speedup for the periodicity checking code. Maybe I'll tackle it after I finish the port of the assembly language formula parser to Xfractint. Jonathan

I just bougth a computer with a AMD Athlon XP 1700+ processor, and I tested my Fractint Screen Saver on it yesterday, in other words running Fractint in diskvideo mode, and I was very pleased with the performance. FOTD -- February 16, 2002 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Yes, I realize that three days have passed since the last FOTD. The FOTD CD is coming on schedule, (8 months are ready, 63 months remain to be done, and the colors of many of the old images need to be brightened.), but the CD is taking so much of my spare time that I have little time remaining for new FOTD's. The FOTD is not in danger of going the way of the dodo however, and when the CD is ready, the new FOTD's will once again appear on a daily basis. After all, what would the philofractal list be without a new FOTD every day? It certainly is not a UF or FractalTalk list. Today's formula, NewtonTest27, is an old one that has lain idle for several years. It represents an early effort on my part to do something unusual with Newton's fractals. Nothing much ever came of the effort, for shortly after writing today's formula, I got involved in the four-dimensional Julibrot figure and midgets in 2-part formulae, and soon forgot my Newton's efforts. But as today's 8-rated FOTD shows, some of these old Newton's formulae can create very interesting images. Studying today's image, I first noticed the prominent spiral in the upper left, then my eye was caught by the lantern-like figures rising from the lower right corner and merging into the spiral. I named the picture "Lantern Spiral". With a rating of 8, the 3-minute render time of the parameter file is quite reasonable. But it is not absolutely reasonable. Those who demand the ultimate in reason will find the image posted in all its illumined glory to Paul's web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and to Scott's site at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> The fractal weather Friday here at Fractal Central was fair enough. The comfort of hazy sun and a temperature of 52F 11C was tempered by a chilly wind that kept the fractal cats confined to the porch. From the porch, they kept a watchful eye on a flock of robins that descended at midday to feast on the holly berries. Tippy chattered wishfully for a robin to stray within pouncing range, but the wise birds never came within several meters of his eagerly waiting claws. As for myself, it's a Saturday morning and I've got 61 months of FOTD's yet to prepare for transfer to CD. So until the next FOTD appears in a couple days, take care, and keep the faith.
