A Double Spiral

Today a spiral. Can you have too many spirals? That's like saying can you have too many paperclips. While it's necessary to have enough on hand to meet immediate needs, it's always reassuring to have plenty in reserve. As I write these words I realize I don't know where I'm going with this so I think I'll change the subject. Fractint for Windows - Questions

Having failed to locate or make a workable display for Fractint 20.x for my Samsung 17" LCD monitor, I recently downloaded the Windows version, 20.04, and have been using it with pleasure. Some questions, however, remain: 1) Is it possible somehow to increase the maximum allowed render size from the current 1536 x 2048 pixels? 2) Can startup parameters be set and default parameters be changed, i.e. so when I start a new fractal rendering, my own colour map is the default? FOTD 05-10-10 (Eyes-a-Popping [7])

FOTD -- October 05, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The parent fractal of today's image came to life when I mixed Z^3 with 1.0085 parts of plain Z then added straight C. This parent is an odd vertical thing with more nooks and crannies that the mythological labyrinth. I'll not attempt to describe it, but it is worth at least a brief look. Today's image lies very near the negative Y-axis, in an area being squeezed between two converging open bays. And as the real(p1) parameter shows, it is a rather critical area. The name "Eyes-a-Popping" refers to the partly-cut-off, eye-like spirals around the central minibrot, which itself is on the verge of losing resolution. The rating of a 7 includes a full point for my coloring effort, which extended over more than 1/2 hour. The calculation takes over 9 minutes -- longer than ideal, but calculation may be avoided by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> A steady chilly rain fell all day Monday here at Fractal Cen- tral, with the temperature remaining near 50F 10C. The fractal cats were more interested in being fed than watching the rain that they never go out in and enjoy. My day was rather slow, which allowed more time for the fractal. FL spent a good part of the day watching Latin novellas on TV, where all they do is eavesdrop, wonder who their parents are, fight and then hit the sack. Thank goodness I don't speak Spanish. FOTD -- October 04, 2010 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a zoom into yesterday's image, this time to a magnitude of almost 2*(10^22). And what has happened to our elephants? Nothing. They are still here, though far less apparent than in yesterday's image. They lurk along the edges of all the arms, waiting only for another inzoom to reveal a few of them. The name "Elephant Microscope" emphasizes the magnitude of the scene. At the scale of today's image, the entire Mandelbrot set would be at least the size of the entire galaxy, if not the size of the entire visible universe. The rating of an 8 indicates that the image has both mathemati- cal and artistic worth. And I did put some extra time into the coloring. Requiring arbitrary precision math, the image is rather slow, taking just under 13 minutes on the 2000mhz unit, but the result is worth the effort. FOTD 01-10-10 (The Lost Elephants [No Rating])

FOTD -- October 01, 2010 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: While reading Mike's description of his Elephant Valley 3-D animation, I noticed that he saw no elephants in the area. In today's image the lost elephants have been found. The image is a blow-up of a small section of the FOTD image for Sep 27. And it is filled with elephants. True, the elephants appear quite different from the standard ones in East Valley of the M-set, but they are definitely there. The most recognizable elephants lie around the upper arch of the large open area. They appear to be arising as hollow outlines from the depths on the left, arching over the open area, giving a mighty trumpet, and then diving back into the depths on the right. But turn the image upside down. There are more elephants hiding in the 'outside' stuff below the open area. They are rather distorted, but unlike the upper elephants, they are filled with much detail. Since the image is a near repeat of a recent image, and I reused the same color palette, I could give today's image no rating. I raised the maxiter to 32767 to better define the narrow high- iteration stripe across the center of the scene. The name "The Lost Elephants" is a bit misleading. Actually, the elephants have been found. The calculation time of 3-1/4 minutes may be more than cut in half by rendering the scene with passes=g, but some smaller detail will be lost. Rendering with passes=1 gives the best result, but doubles the calculation time. The calculation task may be totally avoided by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Torrential rain came in squally bursts here at Fractal Central on Thursday, accompanied by gusty south winds and a surprisingly warm temperature of 77F 25C. The wind caused an hour-long power outage in the late afternoon, but the work was already finished and little inconvenience was felt. The fractal cats never noticed that the power went out. The fractal basement took on surprisingly little water considering the approximately 4-in 10-cm of rain that fell up to 7pm. FOTD -- October 03, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us deep into East Valley of the Mandelbrot set, though not quite deep enough to make arbitrary precision math absolutely necessary. The scene is located in a sub-sub- sub-sub-sub-sub-elephant, which is an elephant on the back of a larger elephant on the back of an even larger elephant, etc. I might have lost track of the actual number of subs, but this is the general principle. At this extreme depth, the high-order elephants take on strange new shapes, but their trunks are just as obvious. The name "Trunksville" refers to the countless elephant trunks scattered throughout the image. Most of the action was achieved by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'tdis' (total distance traveled). Since the image is just another scene in East Valley, I could rate it no higher than a 6. The calculation time of one minute will pass in a flash, and if the image proves to be a flash in the pan, no time will have been wasted. The most efficient way to view the image is to go to the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> where it is posted in all its finished glory for immediate gratification. Uneventful weather prevailed here at Fractal Central on Satur- day, with partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 64F 18C. The fractal cats had a battle over who got to curl up in the laundry basket. I've modded the formula used in the Pseudo-Brots post by adding a bail-out test. I don't get a black screen with this parset.
