I saw a thumbnail of a nice image on the FractInt Deep Zoom webpage. The
image looked interesting but at the time there was no parameter file. What
was there, was a short description of the history behind this image by Dewey
Odhner. Quoting the FractInt Deep Zoom webpage:
"This is a deepzoom image into the Mandelbrot using 63 decimal digits of
precision. Dewey started this fractal and posted the partial image on the
net when it was 2/3 completed after expending approximately 2343 hours of
calculation time on a 486/33 computer."
Wow, 2343 hours and still only a partial image. How did he ever find it and
zoom in on a fractal that draws that slow?
For an anti-aliased image, an answer, and more go to:

Or, you can draw it yourself with the rediscovered original parameter file

FOTD -- September 24, 2010 (Rating 7)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is a scene in the East Valley of a parent fractal
shaped like a hyperbola. The hyperbola is actually a Mandelbrot
set whose western regions have enlarged to the point of infin-
ity. (If the imag(p1) parameter is reduced ever so slightly,
the M-set expands beyond infinity and, as is the nature of hyper-
bolas, returns from the opposite direction.)
I rated the image at a 7 despite my dislike of pastel shades.
FL likes pale light tints and thought the image should be rated
at a 9. Actually, I did tone down the pastel effect a bit since
I rated it.
The name "Candied Decoration" carries the feeling of the scene.
The calculation time of 2 minutes is near FOTD average. The
waiting time may be trimmed by viewing the completed image on
the FOTD web site at:
<http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/>
Thursday here at Fractal Central began with fog. The fog lifted
by 10am, revealing a cloudy sky. But by midday the clouds
cleared away, leading to a midsummer-like afternoon, with plenty
humidity and a temperature of 84F 29C. A small shower developed
in the southwest at sunset, but moved off peacefully to the
south and dissipated. The fractal cats watched none of this,
missing the awe and wonder.
The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take
care, and do Atheists hold religious belief or not? They do not
believe in God or heaven, which implies they hold no religious
beliefs; but as I see it, they do believe that no god or heaven
exists, which means they do hold a belief about religious things
--they believe it's all a feel-good superstition. I guess it's
just word play. And as for my beliefs--we'll skip that for now.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is late because desktop computers work very poorly
without electricity. Don't blame me; blame whatever you call it
-- fate, luck, God, karma, or simply forget the whole thing by
pointing out that annoying things are a well-known part of life.
Today's late FOTD is a quick journey to Seahorse Valley of a
minibrot on a filament extending from a sub-bud on the northwest
shoreline of the bud centered around -1.3 on the negative X-axis
of the Mandelbrot set.
I gave the image no rating because I put no extra effort into
it. We have the richness of the M-set to thank for the image
existing at all.
The name "Hurried Minibrot" is a statement of fact.
The zippy calculation time of 9 seconds is mostly due to some
clever programming tricks of the Fractint team.
The finished image will soon be posted on the FOTD web site at:

A midsummer-type day prevailed here at Fractal Central on Wednes-
day, with a temperature of 86F 30C and lots of sun. But at 5pm
a sudden thunder-storm moved in, bringing torrential rain, winds
gusting to 65mph, 100kph and crackling thunder. The storm moved
off as fast as it arose, but FC was left in the dark until just
after midnight. The fractal cats were spooked by the loud thun-
der, and ducked into the closet, but when things calmed down,
the lack of lights bothered them not at all. The next FOTD will
be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and one place
where you never want to get lost is the Mandelbrot set.

I was going to call today's post "Lavender Spaghetti" instead of "Blue Bubbles" but I thought

asymmetry of yesterday's Mutato Potato. Good old Fractint, the breadth of its output has
a little something for everybody. Ready made at http://maxitersfractalfollies.blogspot.com.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is a scene that lies on the main spike of a mini-
brot near one of the two main spikes of its Mandeloid parent.
This parent fractal is a strange kind of Mandeloid -- a classic
Mandelbrot set that has split apart on its negative X-axis, and
has two main spikes, pointing diagonally upward and downward.
The rating of a 7 might be a bit overdone. The colors could use
more work, and lack the brilliancy I have been trying to achieve
lately.
The name "Low Lamplight" has no connection to anything fractal.
It merely brings a vague feeling of relaxation.
The calculation time of a speedy 36 seconds is faster than FOTD
average, and should cause no trouble. The finished image is
posted on the FOTD web site at:

Another perfect day passed unappreciated by the fractal cats
here at Fractal Central on Tuesday. The day began chilly, with

My day was average. FL was still wondering why I claimed that
mankind is the species in the greatest danger of extinction.

it; it might not. Until then, take care, and take it easy when
it's breezy.

Thanks for making the high-res feed. It's really easy to quickly navigate
over all the images.
Are the par files you link created from the gif's or are they the pars that
were posted on the mail list? I have been noticed several times in the last
few days where I suspect the mail list pars aren't the same as the gif pars.

Have you noticed a discrepancy between my blog gifs and the mailing list
parameter information? When I set up Fractint I loaded my formula file directory
with entries from the Orgform compilation/organizer. Over time I added formula files
from other sources. I tried to keep formula file entry names and formula file entry contents
consistent. However if there is any variation between blog and mailing list entries
give me a shout.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
With a magnitude of over 2*(10^13), today's scene is right at
the limit of resolution. In fact, the start of breakdown
actually adds a bit of jagged variety to the iteration bands.
The scene lies in one of the more remote valleys of the parent
fractal that is created when 2 parts of Z^3 are combined with 3
parts of Z^3 before straight C is added on each iteration.
The name "Testing--1--2--3" means absolutely nothing.
The rating of a 6 seems about right. The calculation time of 10
minutes is a bit too long for the image however. I suggest
skipping the calculation task and viewing the finished image on
the FOTD web site at:
<http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/>
The high point of Monday came during lunch, when FL asked which
species of animal on earth I consider to be in the greatest
danger of extinction. How could I resist such an opportunity?
My answer was honest. I told her I consider humanity the most
endangered species, and I doubt that any fantastic new high-tech
plan can cope for long with our out-of-control reproduction.
Instead of expending our energy on secondary problems like
climate change, we should be more concerned with the primary
problem -- our vast and still growing numbers. If we continue
having children at the present rate, the number of children will
soon reach the point of self-destruction. We need a solution
that is acceptable as well as both moral and effective. Do I
hear any suggestions? I guess not.
Perfect end-of-summer weather prevailed here at Fractal Central
on Monday. At this time of year perfection means cloudless
skies, gentle winds and a temperature of 73F 23C. The fractal
cats celebrated by getting into a tussle behind a shelf of books
in the hallway and spilling about a dozen books onto the floor.
Cassie looked the most guilty when the time came to pick up the
books.
Except for the fractal, my day was occupied by work and discus-
sion. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then,
take care, and is it better to have a positive outlook or to be
right?

I chose this minibrot for today's post not because it is eye pleasing but because it is a curiousity.
Its deviation from the standard minibrot outline is so profound it is not simple distortion but skirts mutation.
That's what I'll call him - Mr. Mutato Potato. Ready made at http://maxitersfractalfollies.blogspot.com
