FOTD -- October 02, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In yesterday's FOTD, I commented that there were upside-down elephants in the detail under the arch of hollowed-out outline elephants. In today's image I pick out and concentrate on the primary upside-down elephant. The name "Primary Elephant" identifies the pachyderm that marches proudly before us in today's image, with its sub-elephants and their sub-sub-ele- phants lined up in its back. I have never before given as much prominence to a single so-obviously fractal elephant! As all Mandelbrot enthusiasts know, each elephant in East Valley stands guard over its particular Mandelbrot bud. So where is the bud that is being guarded by the elephant in today's image? Notice the narrow brilliant horizontal band across the lower part of the image. The broad dark horizontal area between this band and the brilliant white area behind the elephant's upper parts is actually the bud, or what is left of it. The bud has been stretched to infinity by viewing it in the Rectangular direction. Mandelbrot features are compact in the C planes, but extend to infinity in the Z planes. The Rectangular plane consists of the compact imag(c) dimension plus the infinite imag(z) dimension, resulting in an open circular Mandelbrot bud stretched in one direction to infinity, which appears as an infinitely long black open stripe with parallel sides. Although the image is the third visit to the same part of the East Valley complex, the central elephant is so well defined that I rated the image at a 7. A slight drawback is the calculation time of almost 11 minutes, which is long enough to give impatience a chance to raise its fickle head. But impatience may be kept at bay by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> The heavy rain moved out and the sunshine returned here at Fractal Central on Friday, while the temperature took a drop to 70F 26C. The fractal cats spent their afternoon lounging in the sun on the kitchen floor. My day was relatively slow. A bit of water did seep into the fractal basement on Thursday night, but FL with her mop quickly took care of that. Today's fractal is an illustration from "Max Iter's Field Guide to Imitation Minibrots". Like yesterday's fractal this is a minibrot wannabee. Unlike yesterday's fractal it is politely symmetrical not unnervingly twisted. However even the most cursory examination of the nose and side buds show it to be not a true minibrot. As the French say C'est le vino, or something like that. Flying Through Elephant Cut

I made a 3D animation based on Jim Muth's FOTD New_Elephant_View from Sep 27, 2010. Jim's fractal has this great cut running right through the middle of the image. I wanted to fly through the cut and see what was there. I didn't see any elephants but it has some winding roads. The animation is short so the page loads quickly. Multi-Armed Mandelbrot

Today's multi-armed gizmo is a mandelbrot with P1 values perturbed. Yup it's sparkly all right and a anti-aliased version is on the way. Generate a default mandelbrot then bring up the Y screen and vary the inversion values. FOTD 30-09-10 (Something to Watch [9])

FOTD -- September 30, 2010 (Rating 9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I found today's image on the first dive into the parent fractal, which was unusually good fractal luck. Much to my surprise, the image I turned up rates a lofty 9. The generating expression subtracts a tiny part of Z^100 from just over 1 part of Z^2 then adds (1/C) to create a parent fractal that is impossible to describe in words, but consists mainly of a wild mixture of holes and outside stuff. In today's image the holes, which were brought to life with the 'bof60' inside fill, are reddish, while the outside stuff is bluish. The inside of the minibrot is the dead black color in register 077, with assorted other brilliant inside and outside stuff surrounding it. The name "Something to Watch" would have been more appropriate if the FOTD had been a changing animation. As it is, the viewer will have to watch a stationary scene. The rating of a 9 seems appropriate. The image actually is quite good. The calculation time of 1-3/4 minutes is very reasonable consid- ering that an image with a rating of a 9 will be calculated in that interval. And as always, the finished image is posted for instant pleasure on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Wednesday here at Fractal Central featured thickening clouds, with a forecast of torrential rain on Thursday. The temperature of 70F 21C was quite pleasant. The fractal cats spent the day watching for stray cats in the area. I spent the day wondering how much water might get into the fractal basement if the fore- cast 6-in 15-cm of rain actually falls. The next FOTD is due to be posted in 24 hours. FOTD 29-09-10 (Taffytown [9])

FOTD -- September 29, 2010 (Rating 9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In yesterday's discussion about the parent fractal of today's image, I mentioned that the northern period-20 bud is as large as the period-3 bud, which is located on the southern side of the main bay. Today's image is a scene in the radical of that period-20 bud. The location lies in what would normally be considered an elephant-trunk, though in this case, the 'trunk' is nearly straight, and instead of terminating in a spiral, takes a sharp break to the left and dies out in an archipelago of fractal debris. While searching for a name, I had a strong impression of differ- ent-flavored taffies. I then named the image "Taffytown". The rating of a 9 might be excessive, but I really like the image, with its impressive effect of a third dimension and bubbling taffy. The calculation time of almost exactly 2 minutes is close to FOTD average. The trip to the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> where the finished image is or soon will be posted, will be equally fast and will also avoid the task of calculating the included parameter file. Heavy showers during the morning here at Fractal Central on Tuesday gave way to a pleasant, mostly sunny afternoon with a temperature of 81F 27C. The fractal cats appeared quite pleased with conditions, and took up their sentry posts in the side window to watch for unwanted cats. We left the window open most of the afternoon. My day was reasonably peaceful, though I did almost get involved in a futile discussion at lunch time, when FL said something about public education, or the lack thereof.
