FOTD -- December 13, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: After a series of slow images, today's image is a fireball fast one. As I promised yesterday, the image is a scene very deep in the scallops that form most of the shore line of the teardrop- shaped main bay of the parent fractal. The exact location is the north-northwest shore of the parent's main bay, an area that looks hopeless even when magnified many thousands of times. But when magnified billions of times, as I have done in today's image, strange unexpected things begin showing up, including minibrots. I chose a rather subdued color palette for the image, which holds the rating to a 7 on the FOTD scale. If I had taken the time to find more lively colors, the rating might have been up to one point higher. Much of the color that actually is in the image was achieved by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'summ'. The other outside options create renderings that are slightly different though not much improved. The extreme magnitude of over 10^13 makes the mathtolerance entry in the parameter file necessary. This magnitude is also responsible for the resolution breakdown just becoming visible along the band edges. (The minibrots in this area lie deep indeed.) The name "Scallops on the Edges" describes the apparently straight edges in the image, which, due to their scalloped nature and the math breakdown, are not straight at all. The calculation time of only 15 seconds will bring no impatience. The spoiler came when darkness arrived before 5:00PM, which in the middle of the afternoon, and is always rather depressing. But that's how it goes only 10 days from the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The fractal cats appreciated the slightly milder temperatures, but would have preferred a few more hours of sunlight. FOTD -- December 12, 2011 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Things are pretty much back to normal here at FC today, with the FOTD appearing right on schedule. The image with its subdued colors rates a 7-1/2, which is a little above average. The name "Pushing the Limits" refers to the magnitude of over 2*(10^13). This magnitude is beyond the limit of perfect resolution, causing a breakdown, which is already apparent in the central minibrot. The type=formula fractals do not support arbitrary precision math, but the mathtolerance entry in the parameter file is still necessary because of the extreme magni- tude and resulting breakdown. Without the entry, the program would detect the breakdown and reach a magnitude limit beyond which it could not be forced. The parent fractal is a single teardrop shaped bay that came about when I subtracted 0.5 part of Z^100 from 0.5 part of Z^2 and added the standard C. The shore line of this bay is lined with blunt 'coves' that at first appear to be dead ends. A closer examination however reveals much detail in the depths of the coves. Tomorrow's image will show some of this hidden detail, but today we check a different area. Today's image lies in a small, much more obvious valley near the X-axis at the western extremity of this bay. The calculation time of over 5 minutes is a bit too high a price for today's image. Some may not be willing to pay the price, but those who never see the image will never know what they have missed. FOTD -- December 11, 2011 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the same large bay of the same parent fractal that produced yesterday's image. But while yesterday's image was located on the northeast shore line of the bay, today's image lies in a blunt hump on the northwest shore line, just below the valley leading to the smaller bay to the north. I named the image "Bad Boy Got Caught", which has no connection with the appearance of the image but could raise a bit of curiosity as to what kind of image might be given such a name. The rating of a 7-1/2 is a little above the rating of yesterday's image. The curvilinear features make the difference. The calculation time of 7-1/2 minutes is slower than I would prefer. FOTD 10-12-11 (On the Half-Shell [7])

FOTD -- December 10, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due to a not-totally-unexpected antiquing trip out to Big Valley, today's image is a quickie that I found in a hurry when FL and I got back from the day's adventures. The parent fractal is a complex thing with several large vertically stacked bays that resulted when I combined 5 negative parts of Z^(-1.5) with 1.5 negative parts of Z^(-4.5) and added (1/C) on each iteration. The southernmost bay is the largest, and is also the most obviously critical one. Today's scene lies in the debris on the northeastern shore line of this largest bay. I named the image "On the Half-Shell". Something in it must have reminded me of oysters, though whatever it was has been totally forgotten. The rating of a 7 is a come-down from the sky-high ratings of recent images, but it's still above average as far as fractals go. (At least IMO) The calculation time of under 1-1/2 minutes will pass in half a flash, and then you will see if the image was worth the effort. FOTD 09-12-11 (The Great Unknown [7])

FOTD -- December 09, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today we take the last and perhaps least trip into the parent fractal that has kept us occupied for nearly one week -- the fractal that results when 5 parts of Z^0.7 are subtracted from 5 parts of Z^(0.5) and C is added on each iteration. This parent consists of a Mandeloid with a main bay rotated 180 degrees so that it's East Valley is on its west side. The largest bud, which lies east of the main bay is shaped somewhat like the body of a violin. At the far end of this large bud, where the main spike would be expected to sprout, lies nothing but a huge valley with a vast emptiness beyond -- I call this nothingness "The Great Unknown", which also happens to be the name of the image. The image lies on the unknown (east) side of the north branch of the huge valley, where only limitless chaos surrounds the few minibrots. This chaos surrounds the central minibrot in today's image like a 'mystic forest', which is a name I almost chose for the image. The image, with its brilliantly colored slices, is well worth seeing. But it has one huge drawback -- it is slow, taking 20 minutes to finish, and making the calculation a task. When the individual fractalist finishes the calculation, he will have to decide for himself whether the image on his screen is worth the 20 minutes that were required to calculate it. Luckily, there are online web sites where the finished image is conveniently posted.
