FOTD -- December 17, 2011 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the same parent fractal as yesterday's. But today, instead of checking East (actually west) Valley, we check the large minibrot on the main spike pf the parent, which is actually a positive spike. The first thing we find is that this is no ordinary minibrot. It is a strange thing consisting of a main bay with 3 large lobes -- a north lobe, south lobe and east lobe. The single main spike terminates in the East Valley of this minibrot, though two large secondary spikes shoot out northeast and south- east beyond it. Today's scene lies in the valley separating the east lobe of this minibrot from the south lobe. I named the image "Patriotic Overload" because of the red, white and blue color scheme. I rated it at a 7-1/2 because the colors are little more than a tweaking of the colors of yesterday's image. As for the image itself, it will take 2-1/4 minutes of running the parameter file to make a fair judgement. My own opinion is that the image is mostly splashy coloring rather than true math- ematical interest. Clouds moved in just after sunrise to shut off the sun here at Fractal Central today, while the temperature reached a high of 43F +6C. With a brisk wind and obscured sun, this felt cold, but actually the day's temperature was well above normal, as it has been for several months. The fractal cats must have approved of things, for they chased each other up and down the long FC hallway for a good hour this evening. The FC people, FL and I, had an average uneventful day, which is just plain dull, but also real reality, and not the contrived reality they show on TV. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. I'm running DOSBox version 0.74 on Win7 64-bit with an Intel Core i7 CPU, and I'm very pleased with the performance. I use a switch in the config file to get DOSBox to auto-attain max 100% CPU cycles, and set Frameskip to 5... there might be another flag or two that I tweak. FOTD -- December 18, 2011 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a quickie I found in a hurry to get the FOTD caught up to date. The parent fractal was created by subtracting 2 parts of Z^2 from Z^(33) and adding straight (C) on each iteration. This parent appears as the outline of a circle centered around 1.8, with a reasonably intact Mandeloid at its east edge and what resembles a fragment of a main spike at its west edge. Today's scene lies in a valley in an open hole on this spike fragment. Since I have never before seen this exact type of valley, I named the image "A New Valley Scene". I have seen many similar valleys however, and this holds the rating to a modest 6-1/2, one-half point of which is due to the coloring. The calculation time of 3-2/3 minutes is a bit dragging. But once again, the FOTD web sites ride to the rescue. FOTD 16-12-11 (Stream of Ideation [8.5])

FOTD -- December 16, 2011 (Rating 8.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image reminds me of some huge exotic tropical flower, so I named it "Stream of Ideation". (The connection is admittedly vague.) The parent fractal was created when, on each iteration, I subtracted 11 parts of Z^(2.1) from 11 parts of Z^(+1.9), then added straight (C). This parent is a slightly undersized almost- Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees so that its west end faces east. I call it an 'almost' Mandelbrot set because of its two obvious differences. The most obvious difference lies just beyond the large minibrot on the eastward-facing main stem, where the stem breaks into two branches, each going its own way but perfectly mirrored by the opposite branch. Another difference exists at East Valley, in this case on the west side of the main bay, where an extra bud has mysteriously appeared in the interior of the valley. Today's image does not lie in this extra bud, though it is very tempting to see what exists there. The image lies on the outside of East Valley, where the details are interesting enough. (This does not mean I am totally ignoring the inside of the bud. Tomorrow is another day for another fractal.) The usual minibrot lies at the center of image, with its shape obscured by the active inside fill of 'bof61'. I used this active fill because half of today's image consists of 'inside' stuff. The rating of an 8-1/2 includes the usual half-point bonus for the coloring, which really makes the image. The calculation time of 4-2/3 minutes borders on slowness. IMO, it is a fair price to pay for the image however. They spent much of the day trying to compromise on who gets to sleep on the scratching post and who gets the new chair. Nicholas chose the chair before Cassie could make a choice, leaving her with the scratching post. We the people spent the day doing routine things, thinking about the coming holidays and making minor preparations. One thing we never need to think about is the FOTD, which appears on about 9 days out of 10. To prove my point, the next FOTD will be the one for Dec. 17, though with an antiquing trip always possible on Saturdays, do not be surprised if it is late. FOTD 15-12-11 (Chaotic Delight [8])

FOTD -- December 15, 2011 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image rates an 8, with a full point of the rating being earned by the turquoise and peach coloring scheme, which is one of my favorites. The actual parent fractal was created by combining 5 negative parts of Z^(-1.05) with 0.75 negative parts of Z^(-7.5) then adding (1/C) on each iteration. This parent is an immense thing that requires several outzooms before all of it fits onto the screen. It consists of a sprawling mixture of roughly circular bays and less-circular open areas that converge on individual points. Today's image is located near one of these points of convergence. The tiny object at the center of the image is a minibrot, though due to the many holes that it is surrounded by, its nature is almost beyond recognition. The name "Chaotic Delight" might be given to almost any fractal. Why I gave it to today's image in particular will remain forever a mystery. The calculation time of 2-1/4 minutes will pass in a flash, and when the image flashes onto the screen, those who have calculated it will see that the brief time spent was a bargain. The constant threat of rain produced only a few light sprinlkes. The fractal cats, who always wear their topcoats, had no complaints about the temperature, though they would have preferred some sunlight. I spent the day doing routine things, which make no story worth writing about. FL remarked that we actually sold four books last month. Maybe I'll write a book about fractals, science and philosophy, and actually sell a few. But until fame is achieved, I'll continue searching for fractals. Fractals are as oxymoronic as holes. The more that is taken from a hole, the larger the hole becomes; the more fractals we find, the more fractals there are to be found. And the next fractal will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD -- December 14, 2011 (Rating ?) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image rates a question mark, which means it's a puzzle. Is the image a real fractal or an artifact of mathematical imprecision? The iterated expression that created the image is very simple. It combines 1/1,000,000 part of Z^(1,000,000) with Z^2, then adds straight C. I would expect such a combination to produce something like a circle with a Mandelbrot set inside of it, with the circle surrounded by a solid outside. I would never expect to see things like the two overlapping hairline rings of radius 1, which are centered at the origin and at -1,0, with only a vague outline of a Mandelbrot set inside the ring on the right. But this is just the kind of trick that would be caused by a breakdown of precision. It really doesn't matter if the image is a real fractal or an artifact however. Whatever it is, it was created by numbers, and therefore is at least a pseudo-fractal. The Mandelbrot shape was given detail by rendering the image with the inside set to FMOD and the proximity set to 0.16. The name "Real or Unreal" implies the word 'fractal'. It refers to my uncertainty of the nature of the image. The calculation time is a nominal 2-1/4 minutes. Do not be concerned when nothing but dark blue shows up on the screen for a half minute or so. It takes close to a minute for the detail to appear.
