FOTD -- December 21, 2011 (Rating 9.1) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: As I hinted yesterday, today's image is another trip into the main bay of the same parent fractal that gave us yesterday's FOTD image, though today, instead of exploring the northeast shore line, we check the southwest shore. What we find is much of the same kind of stuff that appeared in yesterday's image. The image is not an exact duplicate however, but more of a variation on yesterday's theme, which explains the name "Theme and Variations". Since I reused the same color palette, with only a few registers tweaked, I could not award myself a second bonus for the same palette. But I did raise the rating 1/10th point to a 9.1 to show that, at least IMO, today's image is a small improvement over yesterday's. The calculation time is one minute, a very reasonable time that will pass in a flash once the first coarse-grained pass fills the screen. FOTD -- December 20, 2011 (Rating 9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With today's image we get back into the realm of high ratings. The rating of a 9 includes a full point for the coloring. The underlying mathematical elements are pretty good also. The generating expression combines 3 parts of Z^(-3.3) with 6 parts of Z^(-1.1) and adds (1/C) on each iteration to create a hugely oversized parent fractal that is quite attractive in its own right. Once this oversized parent is squeezed onto the screen, it appears as a large bay with a huge ring attached to its northwest side. Today's scene is located in the trunk of the period-10 elephant on the east side of the large bay. The elephant-like features around the perimeter of this bay appear to have additional interesting fractal scenes hidden in them. I will probably post an additional fractal or two from this area in the upcoming days. The name "Lilac in the Night" refers to the purplish areas along the filaments sprouting from the brilliant green elements surrounding the central minibrot. The calculation will require a sacrifice of around 3-1/3 minutes, a fair enough price for an image rating a 9. FOTD -- December 19, 2011 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "Blobsville". The name refers to the blob-like things filling the frame. I have a kind of soft spot for blobs. Back in my impressionable years, one of my favorite movies was 'The Blob', a low-budget production that was filmed in a small Pennsylvania town not too far from here, and actually managed to rise above its low-budget status. The original blob was an oozing hunk of gelatin from somewhere in outer space that terrorized the town's teenagers until they finally convinced the local police that their town was actually being invaded by a puddle of raspberry jello. The disgusting creature was finally quick frozen by CO2 fire extinguishers as it terrorized the local diner, and dropped onto the arctic ice cap, where it presumably will stay until global warming melts the ice and it returns to life to terrorize towns like Barrow Alaska. Today's image will create no terror, though its rating of only 7-1/2 might bring disappointment. The generating expression combines Z^(-0.01) with 0.01 part of Z^(101) then adds (C) on each iteration. This unlikely combination creates a parent fractal that at first glance appears to be the expected circle of radius one with 100 tiny bays along its perimeter. A closer look however reveals some strange happenings around the edges. Today's scene lies in an unexpected valley inside the tiny bay along the X-axis at the eastern edge of the parent circle. (Other bays might have similar scenes. I haven't checked.) The image is a mixture of inside and outside parts, which are difficult to tell apart. The outside parts were rendered with a setting of 'tdis'; the inside parts, with a setting of 'fmod' and a proximity of 0.3. The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes will be no problem.
