I used to rotate the zoombox using the ctr-pos1 or ctr end keys
but that doesn´t work anymore probably as I have a 16/9 screen.
Found out that it´s still possible with a trackball or mouse using
the right button and straight left or right movement but that´s not
reliable as all other zoombox functions are supplied and you might
loose the image.
Question: which keys can do the job??
Grateful for any help
Albrecht
FOTD -- October 25, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
In today's image I combined 2 parts of Z^(-2.5) with one part of
Z^(-4.5) and added (1/C). The parent fractal that results is a
large shapeless open area filled with blobs of debris. Two
large irregular rings lie to the west of this open area, which
are connected by one of the strangest minibrots, (If a minibrot
is what it is.), that I have yet found. Today's scene lies just
to the southeast of this 'minibrot', on a filament extending
from it. The trip in from the surface or out to it is quite
interesting.
The name "Star of Anchara" indicates that today's image lies
deep inside its parent fractal, just as, according to some
fringe groups, the mystic land of Anchara lies deep in the
interior of the planet earth.
The artistic rating of an 8 shows that extra effort went into
the coloring. But the math rating of a 6 shows that, except for
the strange minibrot on the parent's surface, little new math
interest lies in the image.
The calculation time of 1-3/4 seconds will pass in a couple
flashes. A visit to the web sites will cut the flashes down to
one.
To enjoy today's mathematical wonder with a minimum of effort,
check the official FOTD web site at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
and also the sites at:
<http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html>
<http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/>
and
<http://user.xmission.com/~legalize/fractals/fotd/about.html>
where interesting variations are posted.
More clouds than sun, with a temperature of 50F 10C, kept the
Halloween feeling quite strong here at Fractal Central today.
The fractal cats spent the day testing each other's limits. The
new little 1-kg girl, Jasmine, is learning that she must give
the older 6-1/2-kg guy, Nicholas, a bit of peace now and then,
and the older guy is learning that the newcomer cannot be batted
around at will. The fractal humans made sure the fractal cats
understood the rules.
The next FOTD will probably not be posted until Oct. 27. Until
then, take care, and what about bigfoots and other assorted
monsters? With all the well-founded reports of sightings, it is
impossible, except in the opinions of hard-core skeptics, to
shrug off all these reports as delusions of the gullible. At
the same time, if such monsters did exist, we would certainly
have found some hard evidence such as bodies by this time. And
BTW, let's get Sebastien back on the list. He comes up with
some pretty good images, and I'm not sure why he quit the list
in the first place.

FOTD -- October 24, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's fractal subtracts 0.2 part of Z^3 from Z^2 on each
iteration before adding C. The resulting Julibrot has two
critical values, one at zero, the other at +3.333... The two
values create the same parent fractal -- close to normal
Mandelbrot sets that are oriented at 180 degrees from each
other. Today's image lies in the parent fractal that results
when Z is initialized at +3.333...
This parent is the Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees. It has
an interesting stem extending west from East Valley and another
stem extending east from the main bud. Today's scene lies near
a larger minibrot on the eastern stem, which is along the
positive X-axis and has characteristics of the negative stem of
the M-set.
The name "Carnival of Fractals" came to me as I was wondering
whether to tone down the colors. I finally decided to leave the
colors quite brilliant, which seems to work quite well.
The art rating of an 8 shows that the image is well worth the
1-3/4 minutes required to calculate it on one of today's
fireball units that has not lost the ability to run DOS
programs. Those addicted to things like smart phones and apps
are out of luck . . . I guess . . . But don't worry, for the
web sites are always ready to charge to the rescue and bring
enlightenment. The math rating of a 6 shows that nothing new is
in the mathematical aspect of the image.
So achieve enlightenment, whatever that might be, by viewing
different versions of the finished image on the web sites at:

A mix of clouds and sun, with more clouds than sun, prevailed
here at Fractal Central today, while the temperature of 46F +8C
kept the proper pre-Halloween chill in the air. The fractal
cats who are now just starting to accept each other, had little
time to notice the weather. The newcomer, who we have named
Jasmine, (Jazzy for short), is now large enough to leap onto
many of the old fractal cat's (Nico's) favorite spots. Nico is
not too happy with Jazzy taking over his napping chairs, but he
does not seem too angry either. The humans are mostly letting
the dynamic duo work things out for themselves, ready of course
to intervene if things threaten to get out of control.
The next FOTD will most likely be posted in about 24 hours.
Until whenever, take care, and the United States, usually
referred to as America, is not only the greatest country on
earth, but it is always right. And any country that fails to
agree had better watch its step.

FOTD -- October 23, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image mixes together various portions of Z^2, Z^3, Z^4,
and Z^5. This combination produces a Julibrot with a major
critical value of zero and a minor critical value of -2.499...
The major critical value produces the parent fractal of today's
image -- a Mandeloid with two large wings sprouting from its
East Valley. The minor critical value produces a small remote
Mandelbrot set lying well west of the default screen, with
little of interest in it.
Today's image consists of both inside and outside stuff. The
greenish outside stuff was rendered with the outside option set
to 'tdis'. The inside stuff is colored a lumpy purple, and was
rendered with the inside set to 'fmod'.
I named the image "Strange Goings-On". My reason was that all
fractals certainly are strange. Due to my extra coloring
efforts, the art value rates a 9. The math rating remains a 6.
The calculation time of 4 minutes is rather slow. Checking the
finished images on the web sites is recommended.
Different versions of the finished image are online at:

Lots of clouds with a chilly temperature of 48F +9C made today
feel more like November than October here at Fractal Central.
The fractal cats, who are still getting to know each other, gave
no attention to the outside conditions. The fractal humans did
what needed to be done, while keeping an eye on the cats.
The next FOTD will be posted soon. Check back in 24 hours to
see if 'soon' means 'the next day'. Until next time, take care,
and 125 years ago we thought we had discovered all there was to
be discovered in the field of physics. What happened since then?

FOTD -- October 22, 2013 (Rating A-7,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
In today's image we return to the workhorse MandAutoCritInZ
formula, which automatically initializes Z to a critical value
of the iterated expression, thereby eliminating the need of
tracking down critical values by hand, as is necessary with the
MandelbrotMix3a formula.
Today's parent fractal came about when I mixed 3.3 negative
parts of Z^(-1.3) with one negative part of Z^(-5.3) before
adding (1/C) on each iteration. This parent is a typical
oversized double-negative fractal with three large, vertically
stacked bays and a prominent, nearly circular, fractal fan
extending east. A very prominent minibrot lies just beyond this
fan, connecting it to a large ring farther to the east. Today's
scene lies rather deep in the East Valley of this minibrot.
I named the image "Totally Torus" when I viewed it from a
distance and the brilliant pinkish ring around the central
minibrot impressed me as a torus.
Mostly because of the brilliance of this ring I rated the art
aspect a 7. The math aspect remains a 6.
The image is a relatively slow one, requiring almost six minutes
to complete on one of today's super fireball machines. The time
will be notably longer on an older unit. Viewing the image on
one of the FOTD web sites will eliminate the delay.
Avoid frustration as well as the nuisance of calculation by
checking the finished image and variations on the FOTD web sites
at:

Morning clouds gave way to sun later in the afternoon here at
Fractal Central today. The temperature reached a high of 59F
15C early in the afternoon, but began falling as the day
progressed. The old fractal cat spent the day being annoyed
by the playful antics of the new fractal cat, who amused herself
playing with the old cat's tail, while the fractal humans kept
an eye on the action.
The next FOTD will appear when it is ready. To find out when it
will be ready, check back frequently. Until this moment of
fractal revelation arrives, take care, and don't arouse the
wrath of God, who apparently shares the emotional weaknesses He
condemns in His creations, such as anger. And I have always
wondered -- if God made the universe, where did God come from?

FOTD -- October 21, 2013 (Rating A-7.5,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's parent fractal was created by combining various parts of
Z^(-1.5), Z, Z^(-0.5) and Z^(2). This combination has a
critical value of 0.563... and also a second critical value that
I have not yet tracked down. The parent is a slightly distorted
Mandelbrot set surrounded mostly on the west by a large field of
debris filled with holes and minibrots of various sizes and
shapes. Today's scene ignores this outlying debris however and
centers on the East Valley of the parent, where the debris
converges and vanishes into the depths.
The art rating of 7.5 is largely due to my semi-skilled coloring
efforts. I actually did put almost an hour into the colors.
The math rating remains an average 6. By this time, the trick
of finding critical values graphically is old news, though I
have just begun to explore the basically endless world of
four-exponent fractals.
The name "The Cleansing Fire" has no connection to the catholic
idea of purgatory. In fact, it has no connection to the image.
It simply came into my head when I emptied it of everything
else. But it does get attention, so it will remain.
The calculation time of 2-3/4 minutes is rather slow. The more
impatient fractalists, who were not around when fractals
sometimes took days to finish on snail-speed computers, can
avoid the wait by checking the web sites.
The completed image is or soon will be posted on these FOTD web
sites at:

After the early morning fog cleared off, the day turned out
sunny here at Fractal Central, while the temperature of 64F 18C
was quite pleasant for October. The older fractal cat enjoyed
the sun on his shelf; the new fractal kitten was too busy
exploring her new surroundings and playing. The humans watched
to see how the new fractal duo was getting along together.
The next FOTD will be posted in a day or two. Until the time
comes, take care, and they say God works in mysterious ways. I
say He should stop hiding His reasons, and get it all out into
the open.

FOTD -- October 20, 2013 (Rating A-6,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is found in the parent fractal that results from
combining various parts of Z, Z^2, Z^3 and Z^4, a combination
that has a critical value of Z^-1.211... This parent is shaped
like a near circular Mandelbrot main bay with a main negative
spike and two prominent 'wing-bays' sprouting from its East
Valley area. Today's scene is found in a valley in a bay on the
belly of a strange duck-shaped minibrot that lies on a filament
extending from the large bud on the northwest edge of the main
bay of the parent Mandeloid.
The rating of both the art and math is an everyday 6. The
fractals in which four different exponents of Z are combined on
each iteration tend to be too chaotic for the best fractal art.
I will continue exploring them however, since I know what
surprises can lie in fractals, where even the impossible
sometimes happens. The current math trick, which finds a
critical value graphically, is getting to be 'old hat' and no
longer earns any extra rating.
The name "A New World Coming" might be an idle thought, a
promise, or even a warning. Whatever it means, it has little to
do with the appearance of today's image.
The calculation time of 4-1/4 minutes has everything to do with
the image. it is the approximate time that will elapse between
hitting the 'enter' key and seeing the finished image on the
screen. It's best to eliminate the wait by checking the web
sites.
The finished image is already posted or soon will be posted on
the FOTD web sites at:

Mostly sunny but chilly weather prevailed here at Fractal
Central today. The temperature of 57F 14C felt just about right
for late October. At least the fractal cat had no complaints,
but then he is still getting used to the new kitten arrival.
Meanwhile, the humans had other things in mind to keep them
occupied.
The next FOTD will in all likelihood be posted in 24 hours or
so. Until that glorious time arrives, take care, and it seems
that no two people can agree on politics. Why then can't we
have a political party for every individual person in the
country? If we did, everyone would be in full agreement with
their party's platform, and there would be no squabbling at all.
