FOTD -- October 10, 2013 (Rating A-6,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
In today's image I mixed straight Z with 0.5 part of Z^2,
0.333... part of Z^3 and 0.25 part of Z^4 and then set initial
Z to -1, the critical point of the mixture. (I entered the
value as -0.999... because of a program glitch.) The resulting
Mandeloid resembles a Mandelbrot set with two large wings
sprouting from the north and south sides of the East Valley,
which is grossly enlarged but, at least on the surface, not very
interesting.
Today's image does not lie in this area however. It is located
very deep, near a larger minibrot in a minor valley on the east
shore line of an oddly shaped minibrot on a filament extending
from the large period-3 bud on the northwest shore line of the
main bay.
The art and math aspects both rate a 6, which is a little above
average but nothing to get excited about. The colors clash too
much and are too splotchy to rate anything higher, and the math
is nothing new either. I might have done better with the colors
if I had not become preoccupied with four-dimensional stuff.
The name I gave to the image, "The Worm has Turned", had some
meaning when I thought of it, but I have since lost track of
whatever the meaning might have been.
The slow calculation time of 7-1/4 minutes may be avoided by
checking the FOTD web sites.

A cloudy sky with a temperature of 59F 15C kept spirits under
wraps here at Fractal Central today. The fractal cat hid his
depression under the chair cover; the fractal humans had too
much other stuff to do to feel very depressed.
The next FOTD will be posted before long. The discussion should
include a bit about four-dimensional curiosities, especially the
weird motion possible only in space of more than three
dimensions known as double rotation. Until then, take care, and
this Saturday we will see what the wooly bear caterpillars have
to say about the weather of the coming winter.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's scene lies in the same Julibrot as the past two weeks'
images, though today we check a different critical Mandeloid,
the one that results when Z is initialized to -0.105...
The resulting parent fractal has a string of smaller distorted
minibrots stretched east along the positive X-axis. Today's
scene lies northeast of a curious enlongated minibrot between
the largest minibrot and the eastern main bay.
The thing that first caught my eye is the unusually curved
filaments that fill the frame. I decided on the name "Wandering
Tentacles" when I noticed the strange arrangement of these
filaments.
The math rating remains a 5, as it will until whenever I move on
to another parent Julibrot. The art rating of a 7 could have
been a point or so higher if I had put more effort into the
coloring, which took only 5 minutes or so.
The calculation time of 1-1/3 minutes is reasonably fast for an
image created with such a slow formula. But the web sites will
do it even faster.
To save time and effort check the images posted on the FOTD web
sites at:

They are very trendy.
A thickening layer of high clouds obscured most of the sun here
at Fractal Central today, while the temperature of 64F 19C kept
things feeling appropriately autumnal. The fractal cat hid
himself under the chair cover for most of the afternoon. The
humans made it through the day uneventfully.
The next FOTD will be posted in a reasonably brief period of
time. Until we determine how long a time can be considered
brief, take care, and continue to enjoy the fiction that passes
for the daily news reports.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
While yesterday's image examined the east side of the valley
separating the two main bays of the parent Mandeloid, today's
image examines the west side. Unlike the east side, the west
side of the valley has googols of islands just offshore, and
today's scene lies deep in one of these islands.
Everything in the area is quite skeletal in nature, a fact that
is plainly obvious in today's image. The art rating of a 7
might have been a point higher if I had found a more harmonious
color palette or had tried other outside and inside fills. The
math rating of this series of images will remain at an average 5
unless I find something really unusual in one of the 3 critical
Mandeloids of the parent Julibrot.
The name "Formal Attire" came about when I noticed the bow-tie
shaped elements in the upper left and lower right corners of the
frame. The calculation time of 7-1/2 minutes is just about the
time it would take to fight into formal dress, (at least for a
man). So avoid the battle by viewing the finished image on the
web sites.

Perfect weather prevailed all day here at Fractal Central, with
crystal blue skies decorated by cotton puff cumulus and angel
hair cirrus clouds. The near-average temperature of 66F 19C
pleased the fractal cat greatly, while the fractal humans were
too busy to be pleased very much.
The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours, probably more, not
likely less. Until that exceptional time arrives, take care,
and a four-dimensional planet would have two independent
rotation times, so how long would a day be and would any two
days be the same?

FOTD -- October 07, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-5)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
The question might arise as to why I named today's image "Adam
and Eve". The answer is simple. While searching for a name, I
noticed four 'fig leaves' in the corners of the image -- one
leaf for Adam and three for Eve. (Don't ask for details.) The
name then came automatically.
The generating formula is the same one that I have used for the
past week or so, which mixes various portions of Z, Z^3, 1/Z and
Z^2. Today's parent Mandeloid is the one that results when Z is
initialized to the critical point at 0.098... This parent
resembles two partially critical M-sets sitting butt to butt
with a very prominent valley separating the two main bays.
Today's scene lies on the eastern edge of the northern branch of
this valley. The western edge, which I will check in tomorrow's
FOTD, holds entirely different sub-features.
The artistic worth of 8 is mostly due to the coloring.
Rendering the scene with the inside set to 'fmod' produced the
smoothly curved elements that have been colored. The math value
of 5 indicates that the math trick has lost all impact. This
rating will remain until we move on to a new julibrot.
The image calculates in 1-1/2 minutes on most all modern
machines, but calculation is still a bit of a chore.
So to make life easier, check the finished images at:

Today began cloudy here at Fractal Central. Rain arrived in a
sudden heavy squall just before noon with a 40mph 60kph wind,
and continued lighter into the afternoon. The temperature fell
from 75F 24C late in the morning to 59F 15C at post time, and it
is still dropping. The fractal cat slept through most of the
heavy rain, but became active when a flap arose among the local
pigeons. We humans made it through the day without incident, as
we have done on countless previous days.
The next FOTD will be created and posted within a reasonable
time. Until reason prevails, take care, and some big questions
have no simple answers.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's scene lies in a bit of debris in the center of the
eastern main bay of the parent fractal. Most of the effect was
achieved by rendering the scene with the inside set to 'fmod'
and the outside set to 'tdis'.
Since the parent Julibrot's three critical values have been
investigated on the FOTD for over a week now, the rating is
beginning to suffer. But I am currently quite interested in the
formula, and will therefore continue checking it for a while
longer.
The name "The Full Range" is whimsical, as are a good number of
the names artists give to their works. The calculation time of
30 seconds is no joke. The image really will finish in this
brief time. And for those pressed for time or saddled with
over-qualified computers, the web sites are there to ease the

Today's scene lies in the same Julibrot we have been working
with for the past several days. This time we check the critical
Mandeloid that results when Z is initialized to -0.105... The
parent fractal is a Mandeloid with two main bays. Today's scene
lies in a bit of debris inside the smaller eastern bay. The
scene's 50-50 background consists of 'fmod' inside fill. The
only outside things in the image are the floating bits and
pieces scattered about in the foreground.
I named the image "Two Hidden Minibrots". The two minibrots lie
near the left edge of the scene and are colored a brilliant
white, which does little to obscure them.
The art rating of an 8 shows that I rather enjoy the image. The
math rating of a 7 is helped by the artistic value.
Unfortunately, the calculation time of 11-3/4 minutes cannot be
reduced by running the parameter file with the passes set to
'G'. Doing so would cut the time by more than half, but it
would also miss many of the smaller 'outside' islands. It is
in cases like this where the web sites shine.
Get happy. Enjoy the fractal splendor at:

I don't believe I've ever been so deep inside a brain before...
-- and the poor person's brain is full of black, triangular plaques...
A fun video.

FOTD -- October 01, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today we move to the second critical initial value of Z of
the formula that produced yesterday's image. This new value is
-0.105... and the parent fractal it produces appears much like
yesterday's parent.
Today we check a tiny island in the eastern main bay, which is a
result of the 0.01 part of Z^(-1) in the formula. When this
speck is blown up it is seen to be a series of small islands
surrounded by clusters of even smaller islands. Today's scene
lies in one of these smaller clusters.
I rated the art aspect of the image at an 8, which is mostly due
to the coloring. The math aspect remains a humdrum 6.
The name "Holy Molars" came to mind when the eight bluish-grey
elements surrounding the minibrot reminded me of a ring of
teeth. It is also close to what one of my favorite childhood
comic cartoon characters exclaimed when he saw an emergency that
needed fixing.
The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes is about the right price
for the image. The image is available at a lower price on the
web sites.

A mix of sun and clouds with a temperature of 73F 23C made the
day one more in a string of similar days here at Fractal
Central. The fractal cat slept through much of the day, but
came alive when a pack of pigeons descended in the back yard.
The humans, who enjoy pigeons up to a point, had more important
things to do.
The next FOTD will most likely be posted in 24 hours. Until
then, take care, and the world just ended again but I didn't
notice it.

FOTD -- September 30, 2013 (Rating A-7,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's fractal scene lies in the Julibrot that results when
various portions of (Z), Z^(3), (1/Z) and Z^(2) are mixed
together before straight (C) is added on each iteration. This
unlikely combination has three initial values of Z that are
critical. They are 0.098... -0.105... and -0.473, and all of
them produce variations of a single fractal theme.
Today's scene lies in the parent Mandeloid that appears when Z
is initialized to the first critical value of 0.098... This
parent appears as two Mandeloids lying butt to butt along the
X-axis. Todays scene lies in the "East Valley" of a large open
area on the negative spike extending west from the main bud of
the western Mandeloid.
The image is filled with the goofy eyes that usually surround
minibrots in East Valley areas. But these eyes are much larger
and also more decorated than the typical eyes, with a network of
strings of smaller eyes throughout the scene.
The central minibrot is a bit under-resolved. This is no
problem however, since we all know what undistorted quadratic
minibrots look like. The lack of full resolution is made up for
by a better distribution of the higher-iteration colors.
The name "Integral Eyes" might imply more than the image
delivers. It came to me out of nowhere, probably from some
forgotten sci-fi novel I read many years ago.
The art rating of 7 and math rating of 6 make the calculation
time of 2-3/4 minutes a bit more than the image is worth.
So don't be square. Check the finished image at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
with variations at:

A mix of clouds and sun with a pleasant temperature of 72F 22C
made everyone happy here at Fractal Central today, including the
fractal cat, who stretched out when a stray beam of sunlight
happened to fall on him. The humans had another in an endless
string of everyday days. This might seem boring but don't be
bored. The FOTD is not a soap opera or telenovella.
The next in the near endless string of fractal images will most
likely be posted next month, which just happens to begin in
seven hours or so. Until then, take care, and I sure would like
to see the shadow in 3-D space of a skeletal 4-D hypercube
(tesseract) in a state of double rotation.
