FOTD -- April 07, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The expression behind today's image mixes one negative part of Z^(-1.01) with an equal negative amount of Z^(1.01) before adding (1/C) on each iteration. This strange mixture creates a parent fractal resembling a Mandelbrot set with its main bud cut off and the other buds pushed far around toward East Valley. Today's scene lies rather deep in this East Valley. The name "An Inner Ringworld" was based on the tendency of the parent's radicals to extend outward and curve around toward an attracting point at +0.5 on the X-axis. The art rating of an 8 makes the 4-1/4 minute calculation time marginally worth the result. The math rating of a 6 indicates that we have been to this part of the fractal universe several times before. Viewing the finished image on the web sites can increase the bargain aspect, though it will do nothing for the math. FOTD -- April 06, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The formula behind today's image combines 2.475 negative parts of Z^(-1.05) with 0.275 negative part of Z^(-5.5), then adds (1/C) on each iteration to produce a parent fractal that consists of a hugely oversized near circular bay with two large buds on its west side and a large near-circular extra bay where its East Valley should be. Today's scene is located in the action around this extra eastern bay. The name "Cozy Quadrilateral" has little to do with the image except to point out the roughly four-sided semi-chaotic area surrounding the central minibrot, which lies nearly invisibly at the center. The art rates an 8, helped by the slate gray features in the outer parts of the image. The math rating of a 5 indicates that such scenes have been common in FOTD images for at least ten years. The calculation time of 9-1/4 minutes is inexcusably slow, but relief from the resulting impatience may be found on the FOTD web sites. FOTD -- April 05, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image came about when I subtracted 2 parts of Z^(1.5) from 2 parts of Z^(2.5) and added C on each iteration. This simple combination produces a parent fractal vaguely resembling a Mandelbrot set with its west half split apart, leaving two prominent period-2 buds. The western shore line between these buds consists of all new stuff, with today's image lying in this new stuff, close to the valley leading to the northern period-2 bud. The terraced effect was created by the 'tdis' outside option. The name "The Infinite Beyond" could be true of any fractal, since almost all fractals continue on forever, without limit. The art rating of a 7 is a come-down from recent efforts, but still makes the image worth a look. The main drawback is the admittedly slow calculation time of 9 minutes. FOTD -- April 04, 2014 (Rating A-9,M-4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in a filament extending northwest from the main bud of a minibrot on the main spike of the Mandelbrot set. The minibrot is the first large one beyond the main body of the M-set. The math rating of a 4 indicates that the Mandelbrot set, though infinite, is still the most explored and familiar fractal of all. The art rating of a 9 reflects the extra effort I put into working up the smooth greyish-green coloring of the otherwise routine scene. The down side of the image is that the magnitude of over 10^(15) is beyond the range of conventional high-speed math, making the image with its calculation time of 25 minutes a quite slow one. The up side is that the FOTD web sites can reduce the wait for fractal satisfaction to next to nothing. FOTD -- April 02, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the parent fractal that results when 0.19 negative parts of Z^3 are combined with 0.9 negative parts of Z^2 before C is added on each iteration. This parent appears as a Mandelbrot set with extra features along the positive and negative X-axis. Today's scene lies on the southern shore line of one of the extra features just east of East Valley. The name "Terraces Without End" refers to the terraced effect created by the 'tdis' outside option. The artistic worth of a 7 might be a little inflated, since we have been here often in the past. The math rating of a 6 seems about right. Even though the math trick is old stuff, it still strikes me as interesting. The calculation time of 3-1/4 minutes borders on slowness. I guess that most fractals seem slow to some degree. But the web sites can bypass any trace of slowness. So be one of the big-time thinkers! FOTD -- April 01, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-9.7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The name of today's image, "End of the Quest", says it all. The scene lies deep in the center of yesterday's image, as far as it is possible to go with the Fractint program. Only heaven or someone with days of calculating time to spare can know what lies beyond this point, but from the situation at the center of today's image I suspect there is little to be found beyond this point but total aliasing and Moire patterns. I have made no attempt to determine the periodicity of the rings, though I assume it is into the hundreds. The art value of an 8 is based on the fine detail in the outer parts of the image and the smooth coloring. The math rating of a 9.7 is about as high a rating as has ever been given to the math aspect of a FOTD. The calculation time of a full hour is abysmally slow, but can be ignored by checking the web sites. FOTD -- March 31, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows the HyperMandelbrot set run amok. The scene lies deep in the main bay of a minibrot located in a period-60 radical on the northern edge of the west branch of the valley leading to the large period-3 bud on the northern side of the main bay of the Mandelbrot set. The name "HyperMandel Amok" expresses the growing nonsense in the entire current 'hyper' theme. As is usually the case with these hyper-features inside Mandelbrot buds and minibrots, the periodicity of the scene makes no sense at all. But then what is the need of sense when the image is so striking that the art rates an 8 and the math rates a 9. In fact, I was thinking of rating the math at an apocalyptic 10, but eased the rating down a bit to leave room for possible improvement without going to an artificial rating of 11. The most annoying aspect of the image is its abysmally slow calculation time of 20 minutes, which can be bypassed by checking the finished image posted to the FOTD web sites.
