FOTD -- March 22, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The parent fractal of today's image is another Mandelbrot set surrounded by interesting rings. In today's case the parent is infected with Z^(-60) energies. Instead of being located in one of the outer rings, today's scene lies in Seahorse Valley of the parent M-set, in one of the innermost rings. There is little evidence of seahorses in the image however. The art and math aspects both rate a 7, which means I consider the scene a little above average, but not as good as the FOTD of March 20. The coloring could have been improved and the math trick is on its second round. The name "Delightful Tapestry" simply came to mind out of nowhere. Like the name of a surrealist work of art, it has nothing to do with the appearance of the image. The calculation time of a brief one minute means that little time will have been lost if the image lays an egg. But to avoid an unwanted omelet, check the web sites. FOTD -- March 20, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The parent fractal of today's scene is a Mandelbrot set corrupted by Z^(-99) energies. But this is no ordinary Mandelbrot set. Instead of lying at the center of an unbroken expanse of 'outside' stuff, this parent M-set is surrounded by a series of open rings of trapped 'inside' stuff, and the edges of these rings are filled with all kinds of unexpected semi-chaotic detail. Today's scene lies well to the north of the parent M-set, in the detail along the inner edge of the final ring. The skeletal effect was achieved by setting the first ten color registers to a solid black. Rotating the color palette will produce an entirely different image. Thanks to the skeletal appearance of the image and the unusual open rings in the parent fractal, both the art and math aspects of today's FOTD are worth an 8. The infinitesimal calculation time of only 25 seconds is no exaggeration. On most machines, the image will finish in even less time. Visiting the web sites will probably save no time, but it will eliminate the inconvenience of setting up and calculating the included parameter file. FOTD -- March 19, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: After seventeen years, not the sixteen years that I said a couple days ago, the FOTD continues unabated, with no sign of a slowdown in sight. In fact, now that the graphic design activity is intentionally easing off, I find myself with even more time to work on the art aspect of the images. Today's image lies in a parent Mandelbrot set that is corrupted even on its surface by Z^(-0.5) energies. The main sign of the corruption is the fractally divided negative stem, where I found today's curious scene lying just east of the partially split main minibrot. The name "The Shy One" points out how the outstanding bluish feature is partially hidden behind the intruding dull red foreground features, almost as though it were too shy to come out into the open. As I see it, both the art and math aspects of today's image rate a 7. The calculation time of just over one minute will pass in a surprising semi-flash. Fractalists who do not enjoy semi- flashes may find flash freedom on the FOTD web sites. FOTD 18-03-14 (A Bad Case of Zits [A-7,M-7])

FOTD -- March 18, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene in the East Valley of a skeletized Mandeloid in the parent fractal that results when a Mandelbrot set is corrupted by (1/Z) energies. This parent has other Mandeloids strung along its X-axis, some of which could be quite interesting. The art and math aspects both rate a 7. I think the image is at least a little above average, even though the name "A Bad Case of Zits" is not likely to enhance the artistic impression. But don't blame me for the name. I'm only reporting what I saw in the image. The zits can be made larger or smaller by changing the real(p2) parameter. Increasing its value makes the zits smaller; decreasing the value makes them larger. But don't go too far in either direction. Things could get totally out of control. The calculation time of just over 2 minutes is fair enough. It's too bad that real life zits can't be banished this quickly. The fractal cats took turns enjoying the sun on the shelf, both wishing the other would choose another non-activity, while the humans, no longer sure whether they are liberal or conservative, or whether there is any difference, pondered the world situation. The next FOTD will be posted in the proper time, which most often means the next day. Until whenever, take care, and I just watched the second in the TV series of 'Cosmos' remakes. The message I got from the program is that, in the dispute over the thoreies of intelligent design versus random natural selection, the natural selection theory is the winner, at least in the rationalist camp. My advice to the series producers is to make their agenda a little less obvious and find some background music that could put a little more spirit into their series. Of course, I'm not sure that rational skeptics want anything to do with spirits. FOTD -- March 17, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: If my records are correct, (which is not at all certain), today is the 16th anniversary of the day I introduced myself and posted the first fractal to the Fractal Art list. To celebrate the momentous occasion, I have reposted my original introduction to the Fractal Art list. START OLD STUFF-------------------------------------------------- Hi everyone: I'm Jim Muth. I'll introduce myself by telling a bit of my background. I am a short-story writer, graphic designer and armchair philosopher, living in a large East Coast city (Baltimore, MD) in the U.S.A. I became interested in fractals back in the 1980's, when the first article about the Mandelbrot set appeared in the Scientific American Magazine. I have always had a desire to explore unknown regions, but found myself frustrated because the unknown parts of this world have already been almost totally explored and the vast unknown places of other worlds are yet to be reached. The world of fractals in a strange way fulfills that desire. To me, fractals are mystical things, objects of a world neither real nor unreal. I am fascinated by them, by the tremendous enigma of their existence, by the way they go on and on forever -- infinity reduced to the size of a computer screen. I am fascinated by the simplicity of the mathematics behind them, as well as by the incredible pictures they make. But I am fascinated most of all by their philosophical aspect. As I work with them, I constantly wonder what they are, and what do their beautiful patterns mean. What is a fractal? The answer is simple -- the mapping of a recursive function to the screen". But stop a moment to consider the Mandelbrot set, one of the simplest fractals. How many Mandelbrot sets exist, one or many? If the Mandelbrot set is merely the image that appears on a computer screen when the formula Z^2+C is reiterated, then thousands of identical Mandelbrot sets are constantly coming into existence and vanishing as thousands of computers are switched on and off worldwide. If these images are separate entities, then why are they identical? Apparently, a unity lies behind the separate images. But if the Mandelbrot set is a single object that has an existence beyond the ephemeral images that flicker on the world's computer screens, then the question arises, "what type of existence does this archetypal Mandelbrot set possess?" Is it real, imaginary or virtual? The question sounds almost comical until one thinks about it. One might also ask, "did the Mandelbrot set exist before computers were invented?" Questions such as these are not so easily answered. In some ways the Mandelbrot set is no more than an idea, a potentiality like sub-atomic particles, which according to certain interpretations of quantum theory, do not come into existence until they are actually observed. Are fractals good art? This is a question with as many answers as there are people who answer it, for good art exists in the mind of the beholder. If a person glances at a fractal image and passes on without second thought, then to that person fractals are not art. But if a person sees a degree of beauty in a fractal image, if that image fills the person with a sense of awe and wonder, then fractals are indeed art. To me, fractals are art of the highest order. I have created many thousands of them over the past ten years, most of which have long since been discarded. But those discarded images still exist somewhere out there, like ghosts lost in the ether, waiting for the time when some unknown enthusiast enters the same magic formula into a computer, and once again brings them to life. In future postings I'll have much more to say, some things not quite so philosophical, others far more so. As for today's image, it is a scene on the negative X-axis of a Mandelbrot set corrupted by Z^(10.9) energies. The scene is located at a point where the main spike has divided into two main branches, with today's image lying between the branches. I have adjusted the escape radius (the real(p2) parameter) to place the scene at the edge of annihilation, where the swiss cheese effect is at a minimum. The name "Random Arabesque" is the first phrase that came to mind as I studied the image in search of a name. In my opinion, which is what counts, the art is worth an 8 and the math worth a 7. The calculation time of just over 2 minutes will pass quiclky enough, though the web sites can cut the wait still further.
