Back on 10 March I made a rare posting to this list. I was primarily responding to the query from Tim Wegner about the platform, graphics, and monitor that people use. I said that I am a lurker and I have been subscribed to the Fractint list since 1991, and have followed it closely ever since. I did say to Albrecht that I greatly enjoy his fractals, as I have for more than twenty years those from Jim Muth. I also passed my thanks to the Stone Soup group. My message sparked some correspondence off the list with Hal Lane, mostly about things other than fractals. In turn this prompts me to say a BIG THANK YOU to The Stone Soup Group, and those like Tim Wegner who are still working away Others like Richard who have built new software All those like Jim Muth, Paul Lee and Hal Lane who have discovered fractals, enhanced them, and maintained great web sites, and now of course Albrecht People like Jack of Iradez who have posted animations (I especially like those with baroque music) ... and the rest of the Fractint community. FOTD -- May 06, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's colorful image is named "Surprisingly Simple". The name refers to the surprisingly simple formula behind the image, Z^2+C, which creates our old friend the Mandelbrot set, perhaps the greatest fractal of all, yet the one that never fails to reveal a surprise every time I venture there. Today's scene is located in the largest valley inside the large period-5 bud on the northwest shore line of the main bay. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the image is the way the resolution has held up while using conventional math even at the extreme magnitude of over 10^13. Of course, rendering the image using arbitrary precision math will produce marginally better resolution, but the calculation time will be in the hours instead of 3-1/4 minutes. Thanks to the 'tdis' outside option plus a little extra coloring effort from me, the art aspect rates a 7. The math rating of a 6 is based on the unexpected resolution at such a high magnitude. The generating expression itself is the most overworked in all of fractal land. To see the image, run the included parameter file and wait a few minutes, or shift to arbitrary precision math and wait a few hours . . . or avoid the problem altogether by viewing the image on the web sites. FOTD 05-05-14 (Rectangle Homicide [A-7,M-7])

FOTD -- May 05, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The S-shaped thing at the center of today's image is the curious rectangle just east of the large minibrot on the fractalized main spike of the Z^(2.003) Mandeloid. It looks nothing like a rectangle because the scene is sliced in the Oblate orientation, which is defined by the imag(C) and real(Z) axes of the Julibrot. I named the image "Rectangle Homicide" because of the violence I wreaked on the rectangle, though I realize that it's rather hard to be found guilty of murdering a rectangle. As I see it, the art and math aspects both rate a 7. The art is, well, all right, while the four-dimensional math trick has worn pretty thin by this time. The calculation time of 4-3/4 minutes could lead to impatience, so I recommend saving time by checking the web sites. FOTD 04-05-14 (Sandy Spectacle [A-7,M-6])

FOTD -- May 04, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's quick-to-finish image is a scene in one of the parent fractals that results when the expression Z^(1.5)+C is iterated a whopping 439.5 levels down the hyperladder. For some reason unknown even to myself, I used the older MandelbrotBC2 formula to find the image. This parent consists of a large irregular bay vaguely resembling a strange automobile with two large front wheels and no rear wheels. The heads of two people can also be seen in the image, formed by the two large buds. Today's scene is located in the debris on the northern shore line of the large bay. In my opinion, the art aspect of the image is worth a 7, while the math aspect earns no more than a 6. The name "Sandy Spectacle" points to the large areas of sandy chaos that fill the scene. The calculation time of one brief minute should do away with fractal boredom, while the web sites can do away with the calculation chore entirely. FOTD -- May 02, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The name of today's image asks a question -- "How Low Are We?" The real(p1) parameter answers that question. The exponent of Z in today's image lies at the lowly level of 1.067, a level where fractals would normally be assumed to be virtually impossible, much less filled with minibrots. But thanks to the overworked MandelbrotBC3, which calculates the multiple values of the complex-log function, we have not only a fractal, but a rather exciting minibrot. The parent fractal resembles an orca swimming freely through its natural habitat, the ocean. The fractal orca is surrounded by a cloud of sandy debris that could be bubbles. Today's scene is located in this bubble debris, to the lower left of the orca. The minibrot in today's image is shaped like a plunging rocket ship, not at all like the orca shape of its parent. Almost all minibrots in this ultra-low range of exponents of Z are shaped like rockets or torpedoes, but this does not mean the scenes are worthless. The features surrounding the minibrots can sometimes be surprising. The art worth of today's image rates a 7. In my opinion, the art aspect is notably above average, held up by its brilliant coloring. The math rating of an 8 points to the surprise of finding a minibrot in a fractal with an exponent of Z as low as 1.067. And this is not the lowest possible exponent that would produce a fractal with minibrots. Like all things fractal, there is no well-defined cut-off point below which fractals with minibrots are impossible. Finding them simply becomes ever more difficult until the fractalist simply stops his search. The maxiter of today's image is 420,000, which results in a calculation time of 7-1/2 minutes. This is a good example of the increasing difficulty as the exponent approaches unity. And even with this extreme value, the minibrot is far from fully resolved. Luckily, the web sites are there to bring relief. So escape fractal drudgery. FOTD 01-05-14 (Close But No Prize [A-6,M-6])

FOTD -- May 01, 2014 (Rating A-6,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal diversion takes us to the Mandeloid fractal that results when Z^(5) and Z^(3) are combined and (C) is added on each iteration. This parent fractal, which consists of two large bays, resembles a peanut balanced on its butt end. Neither bay appears totally critical, though the northern bay comes closest. Today's image lies in a blunt arm intruding into a large bud on the northwest shore line of the northern bay. The unusual effect was achieved by rendering the scene, which contains much inside stuff, with the 'inside' set to 'bof61'. But despite the effort, the result falls short of what I had hoped for, and earns a rating of a double six. The name "Close But No Prize" reflects my mild disappointment. The lengthy calculation time of 7-1/2 minutes does nothing at all to bring consolation. But relief is still available on the FOTD web sites. FOTD -- April 30, 2014 (Rating A-5,M-5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image rates a totally mediocre 5 in both its art and math aspects. I'm not sure what happened, but the more I worked on the colors, the less satisfying they became. I finally gave up and decided to make the mish-mash of colors the theme of the image, hoping that something worthwhile might emerge. The parent fractal was created when I combined 10 parts of Z^100 with 0.1 part of straight (Z) and added straight (C) on each iteration. This parent is nothing more than a lopsided open circle with 99 tiny buds around its perimeter. Today's scene is located in a small area of interest along the negative X-axis where it emerges from the circular main bay. The name "Uncoordinated Color" describes my impression of the scene. But even though the colors are gaudy and clashing, this does not mean the image is worthless. And the relatively fast calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes makes it a small task to see the meager worth. FOTD 29-04-14 (The Fourth Dimension [A-6,M-7])

FOTD -- April 29, 2014 (Rating A-6,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's scene in the East Valley area of the Z^2+C Julibrot was created by the 'ranges' feature of Fractint, a feature that I very rarely use. It is such a rarely used feature that I am not even sure the more current Fractint-emulating programs have the ability to reproduce it. As far as I know, the 'ranges' feature can be accessed only through a command-line entry. The 'ranges' instructions, which are rather complicated, are available in the program documentation. The image slices the Julibrot in an orientation halfway between the Elliptic and Rectangular. The vaguely elephant-shaped open area in the foreground shows that we are roaming the East Valley area. The brilliantly blue bars in the background show that regardless of where the points in the Mandelbrot set begin their journeys, if they do not escape first, they will eventually settle into the same orbits as points that begin at 0,0. And if we look closely, we can actually see the dull red, low iteration foreground stuff gradually merging into the high iteration stuff making up the horizontal blue bars in the background. There is no problem with the colors section of the parameter file. Since the final 242 color registers are all solid black, I have combined them into a single register to save space. I named the image "The Fourth Dimension". After all, the Julibrot certainly does exist in four spatial dimensions. The art earns a rating of an acceptable 6, while the math, which involves four dimensions, rates an improved 7. The calculation time of 1-2/3 minutes is fast enough to keep impatience under control and slow enough to give time to watch the scene unfold on the screen. But calculation is still a chore, and this chore may be avoided by checking the finished image on the web sites.
