FOTD -- June 17, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "Superposition". This name has nothing to do with the even more mysterious quantum world. It is a simple overlaying of the Mandelbrot and Julia aspects of Seahorse Valley, calculated without using multiple layers. The two bright beige spikes intruding from the north and south edges of the frame are part of the Mandelbrot aspect of the valley. The small bluish figure centered between the points of the spikes is a somewhat distorted version of the Julia set of Seahorse Valley. This is the first fractal I have found that shows both 'seahorse' aspects in their proper places with so little distortion. The art and math ratings of 8 seem about right, at least to me. The calculation time of 1 minute will pass in a semi-flash. The flash may be eliminated by checking the finished image on one of the web sites. So be happy. FOTD -- June 16, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Let the banners wave and the trumpets blare. The work is finished and the FOTD is back! We're still rather busy here at FC however, so today's discussion will be rather brief. The image is an 'evaporated' one, meaning the entire scene consists of 'inside' stuff made visible by an active inside fill, in this case the 'bof60' fill. The 'outside' stuff has evaporated away due to the bailout radius of 1,000,000. The image is an 'almost-Julia' scene sliced through the Seahorse Valley area of a Z^2+C Julibrot corrupted by Z^(-10) energies. Since there is no distorted low-iteration 'outside' stuff to obscure the Mandelbrot shape, the outline of the entire M-set is plainly visible, though greatly enlarged due to the acute angle of the slice. The most surprising thing however is the skeletal Julia set of Seahorse Valley, which lies in its proper place at the junction of the two branches of Seahorse Valley in the M-set outline. I will show this skeletal Julia set in its full glory in the next FOTD, to be posted in the near future. The name "String Along with Me" refers to the strings of brilliant fractal beads strung throughout the image. These strings of beads will become more prominent in the next FOTD. The art rates an honest 7. There have been images with far better coloring in the past. The math rating of an 8 is based on the superposition of both the Mandelbrot and Julia aspects of Seahorse Valley. The calculation time of 1-1/4 minutes is fast enough, but a little time could still be saved by checking the web sites. Virtualbox Appliance

David Riccio very kindly put together and sent to me an Oracle VirtualBox appliance which I have put up on our (incredibly ancient, stodgy, inexpertly hand coded, rarely updated) fractint.net website. I have created a new directory virtual_environments ( http://fractint.net/ftp/virtual_environments/) where I put his appliance. We can put usb drive images and other such things there as time goes on. David is a linux user, and runs his appliance with no trouble under linux. I briefly tested it under Windows 8.1, and had no difficulty. You will need Oracle VirtualBOX installed on your system. There are few tricks to using VirtualBOX, mainly how it handles the mouse cursor, but by and large I found running fractint to be straightforward. If anyone cares to write a few instructions, I will get them posted. (I'll be away for a few weeks, so will not be able to respond as quickly as I would like if someone sends me something.) I continue to be amazed how there are multiple ways to continue to run Fractint, a DOS program, on modern machines. Here's a very crude listing of some of the ways, including a few pros and cons. 1. Booting FreeDOS directly from a USB drive. Pros - the fastest option - usb drive provides a way to save the resulting fractals. Cons - some machines won't boot from USB drive - needs some add-ons to get best possible vesa support 2. DOSBox: Pros - terrific vesa video support, especially if you use the svn version - runs under many OS's - easy to update fractint Cons - slower because it is a virtual machine. - needs a little more setup, less turnkey. 3. Virtual Appliance: Pros - turnkey solution - runs under just about any OS Cons - slower because it is a virtual machine. - a bit of work to update fractint 4. Run under older Windows (XP or earlier) Pros - machine can run developer environment Cons - have to keep old machine or multi-boot environment around. Feel free to chime in if I didn't get something quite right. I would be curious to know pros and cons of DOSBox and virtual appliance approaches from other people's perspectives. They seem similar, albeit implemented differently, but I would think there are higher resolution options with DOSBox. Tim

Fractint under FREEDOS from USB drive

This is just a preliminary report, but I think I have found a solution for running the DOS fractint that will work for a lot of people, and one that the Fractint team (such as it is) might be able to support. This makes it possible to run the DOS fractint on modern combuters. The hardware requirements are: 1. Bios that permits booting from a USB drive 2. Graphics with decent VESA video mode support. I bought a bunch of Sandisk Cruzer Fit 8 gb USB drives. These are physically almost too small, they are not much larger than the USB connector itself. I have seen some complaints that some software recognizes them as fixed drives and won't format them. This actually worked to my advantage, because the Award BIOS of my XP machine treated it as a hard drive and let me select the Cruzer Fit to boot from. There's a terrific free tool called rufus available here: http://rufus.akeo.ie/ that runs under Windows (in my case Windows 8.1 64 bit) and can format the USB drive to boot to DOS. I used FreeDOS, but you can use just about any DOS instead. I like using FreeDOS because the default installation seems to do what Fractint needs with extended memory etc. I will verify that this is right. Then I dumped the entire fractint distribution on the USB, with the single difference that I used a fractint.cfg generated by makecfg.exe with the VESA modes for my XP machine. When I ran Fractint, every VESA mode worked, even modes that exceeded the native resolution of my cheap secondary LCD monitor. The problems using higher resolution modes on the same computer under Windows XP vanished. On a related note, I am thinking about putting up a wiki at fractint.net/.org. We could put up instructions like this, par files, images, etc. I wouldn't want to pre-empt others that have fractal sites, but the idea is just to provide more information that would help folks use this ancient DOS program. I would like to hear from anyone else who has used a DOS-from-usb-drive environment to run Fractint. One could literally have a DOS fractint environment booting from on a machine with no hard drives. On a 4Core machine I have run 3 copies of the VM with not much impact to the host. This will work with FreeDOS VM and Microsoft DOS VMs, It will also run under a WinXP VM, and a Win98 VM. The most stable platform for the VMs with the least problems seems to be Mint 16 (about March, 2014 vintage + patches)...But all the Debian variation seem to work OK ... Use the Virtual Box that is in the standard software library (I have had problems using the latest versions on the Oracle site, there are issues with compatible libraries, etc) Moving images from the Dos VM Hard Drive can be an issue ... you need to setup a shared drive and networking under DOS ... FreeDOS has tools for this, also MS DOS has access to Microsoft's Networking tools. But it can be a pain to get everything talking.
