FOTD -- July 13, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-7)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image lies near a tiny minibrot that lies near a larger
minibrot that in turn lies near an even larger but still very
small minibrot just beyond the large minibrot on the main stem
of the parent Mandelbrot set, which has been corrupted deep in
its depths by Z^(11) energies.
I named the image "Solar Prominences" when the curving filament
loops around the edges of the scene reminded me of the
prominences seen through a telescope around the edge of the
sun's obscured disk during a total solar eclipse.
Both the art and math aspects are far enough above average to
rate a 7. Fifteen minutes of extra attention to the colors
raised the art to this same level. The unexpected combination
of quadratic and order-11 features raises the math to the same
level.
The calculation time of a very neat and tidy one minute will
keep boredom in the background, but do not forget the web sites
for interesting variations.
These side trips are posted on the FOTD web sites at:

Today could best be described as variably cloudy, warm and humid
with a chance of showers. The temperature of 88F-(the official
U.S. temperature) 31C-(the temperature in the rest of the world)
was what is usually expected at this warmest time of year in
Central Pennsylvania. The expected thunder showers finally
arrived in the evening. The fractal cats took the day as easy
as possible, while the fractal humans did the same.
The next FOTD will be posted in a day or two. Until whenever,
take care, and what does a person have left when he loses faith
in both religion and science?

FOTD -- July 10, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's polka-dotted image lies in the parent fractal that
results when three negative parts of Z^(-2.3) are combined with
one negative part of Z^(-7.7) and (1/C) is added on each
iteration. The resulting fractal is a sprawling thing with a
main bay that resembles Mickey Mouse lying on his right side.
Today's scene is located in a filament extending from a lump on
Mickey's right ear.
The art rates a 7; the math rates a 6. There have been far
better images in FOTD history, and we have been to this part of
the world of fractal math many times before.
The name "Spots Before the Eyes" simply describes the overall
impression of the image. Calculating the scene with the logmap
reset to zero and the outside set to 'tdis' eliminates some of
the spottiness, but brings little improvement to the overall
appearance of the image.
Perhaps the best feature of today's FOTD is its unusually brief
calculation time of 30 seconds, which is quite surprising
especially considering the image's magnitude of over 10^12. The
web sites are always there to eliminate any residual impatience.
The finished image is posted online at:

Near perfect weather prevailed here at Fractal Central today.
Near perfection is defined as partly cloudy skies, lower
humidity and a temperature of 82F 28C. The two fractal cats
enjoyed the conditions to the most of their cat ability, while
the fractal humans, with other things to do, paid little
attention to the outside conditions.
The next FOTD will be posted in a day or so. A FOTD posting
every other day seems to be becoming the new FOTD normal, but
this is not a permanent change in the schedule. Until whenever,
take care, and there were several tornadoes in the local area
two days ago. Believe it or not, the number of resulting power
outages made bigger news than the damage and deaths caused by
the storm. Even today the outages are still the top local
story. When a few days without electricity and the resulting
unendurable disconnection from the rest of the world is seen as
a greater disaster than the deaths of five people, I begin to
suspect we have become a bunch of underactive overweight tech-
addicts who are much too fascinated with and dependent on the
latest hi-tech gadgets.

A typically warm and muggy hazy summer day passed uneventfully
here at Fractal Central today. The temperature of 91F 33C kept
things on the lazy side, especially among the fractal cats, who
spent most of the afternoon stretched out in the living room.
The humans, unable to take it as easy, spent the day doing the
necessary things as slowly as possible. The day ended with a
heavy thunder-storm that dropped the temperature to 70F 21C.
The next FOTD will be posted in a day or two. Until then, take

FOTD -- July 06, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-7)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's FOTD image lies in the parent fractal that results when
the expression Z^(1.9)+C is iterated 19 levels up the complex
logarithmic hyperspiral with no function applied. (I chose the
value of 19 whimsically.) This parent resembles a distorted
Mandelbrot set rotated so that its main spike points to the
southeast and its East Valley lies on the northwest side of the
main bay. Today's scene lies in one of the curious square
shaped areas of chaos on the southwest side of the valley.
The unusual donut-ring effect was created by rendering the image
with the outside set to 'fmod' which draws the overlapping
circles. The name "Donut World" refers to these rings of
fractal stuff.
The art rates an 8, which might be a bit exaggerated, since I
doubt that the hasty color work is the best I could do, but the
math rating of a 7 seems about right.
The calculation time of 2-1/4 minutes is near FOTD average. The
average amount of time may be saved by checking the finished
image on one of the web sites.

For all who have an interest in such things, the weather here at
Fractal Central was totally perfect today, with photoshop blue
skies, brilliant sunshine, low humidity and a temperature of 84F
29C. The fractal cats, living the indoor life, took the outdoor
conditions in stride; the fractal humans passed the day spending
more time outside than usual.
The next FOTD will be posted in either one, two or three days.
Until whenever, take care, and let's combine all the world's
religions, average out all the beliefs, and see what we come up
with. The way it is now, there are so many different and con-
flicting religious beliefs that any thinking person, especially
in our materialistic science-based culture, must wonder if there
is any real truth at all behind the world's different religious
teachings. Such doubt could easily be the reason so many lash
out in anger when their religious beliefs are questioned or
denied.

FOTD -- July 04, 2014 (Rating A-5,M-7)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is a scene in the Mandeloid that results when the
expression Z^(2.1)+C is calculated only 1 level up the
hyperladder with no function applied. This parent fractal
vaguely resembles a Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees with an
unusually broad Seahorse Valley neck. Today's scene lies in the
Seahorse Valley of a larger minibrot on a filament extending
from the period-4 bud on the south shore line of the main bay of
the parent fractal.
The large open area at the center is actually an order-2.1
minibrot, but judging from its cloven-hoof shape, one would
never guess it. The shape of this minibrot of course, is the
reason for the name "Cloven Hoof".
The appearance of such an unlikely shape in such an unexpected
location hints at the presence of the forces of evil. The
cloven hoof has long been symbolically associated with evil and
especially with the prince of evil himself -- the devil!
I myself have no belief in an anthropomorphic devil, which to me
is a symbolic representation of the inherent weaknesses of
humanity, though there are certainly enough people in this
bible-belt area of Pennsylvania who still do believe in such a
being, and actually try to convince others that he does exist
and is waiting to receive their condemned souls if they do not
change their ways.
So, at the risk of eternal damnation, I present today's image in
a frivolous manner. The cloven hoof is certainly only a curious
accidental shape, or could it be that . . .
The art rates a 5. I don't want to give the devil more credit
than he already has. The math rates a 7. Could it be possible
that demonic forces have already worked their way into the realm
of numbers?
With a calculation time of 20 minutes, the image is surprisingly
slow. Some of this could be due to the maxiter of 4200 . . . or
could it be a sign that the forces of evil are already infecting
the image?

explosions had not kept them on the alert. The humans enjoyed
the day anyway.
The next FOTD will be posted in a day or two. Until whenever,
take care, and why is it so hard to separate the good from the
evil in the real world conflicts?

FOTD -- July 01, 2014 (Rating A-6,M-7)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's fractal FOTD image lies in an oversized Mandelbrot set
corrupted even near its surface by Z^8 energies. (The real p(1)
parameter defines the order of the corruption; the imaginary
p(1) parameter defines the intensity of corruption as well as
the size of the parent fractal. The greater the value of the
imaginary parameter, the deeper the corruption is buried and the
less its intensity.)
Today's scene lies in the large minibrot on the main spike of
the parent M-set. This minibrot has already partially morphed
into an order-8 minibrot, with an interesting mixture of Z^2 and
Z^8 elements. Today's scene lies in some Z^8 stuff that is just
appearing in the area of Seahorse Valley of the main spike
minibrot.
The art rates a 6. I did give the colors a bit of extra effort,
but hardly enough to make the image in any way exceptional.
With a rating of a 7, the math rates a little better. I still
find higher order minibrots with such unexpected surrounding
patterns rather fascinating.
The image is astoundingly fast, calculating in a fireball 20
seconds or less. And the web sites are always ready to remove
the task of calculation entirely.

Lots of heat and humidity prevailed here at Fractal Central
today. A mild thunder shower in the afternoon cooled things
down from 95F 35C to 79F 26C, but also raised the humidity. The
fractal cats went into full stretch-out mode in the coolest
places they could find, while the humans took the day as easy as
we have taken hundreds of others.
The next FOTD will be posted in a day or two or three. Until
whenever, take care, and science is saying things about the
'real' world that have even the most devout skeptics shaking
their heads in puzzlement. As for me, I find their frantic and
often contrived damage control efforts quite amusing.

FOTD -- June 29, 2014 (Rating A-6,M-5)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
It has been 3 days since the most recent FOTD, but that's the
way of it sometimes. After all, fractals are almost the most
important things in life, but not the most important.
Today's belated image shows an order-11 minibrot lying deep in
the chaos on the west side of the north branch of Seahorse
Valley of its grossly oversized parent Mandelbrot set. The name
"A Stray Undekabrot" confirms this description.
I am becoming rather involved in investigating these higher-
order fractals and their minibrots, though I have yet to concoct
a formula that brings the size of the parent fractal under
control in a satisfactory manner. In fact the futile search for
a suitable formula is the main reason for the current irregular
schedule of the FOTD.
I could rate the art no higher than a 6 and the math interest no
higher than a 5. The image is still worth a quick look however,
at least in my opinion.
The calculation time of 3-3/4 minutes is rather slow for an
image that rates a measly 6+5. Here is where the web sites
charge to the rescue.
After waiting three days for further fractal satisfaction, why
wait any longer. View the image instantly on the FOTD web sites
at:

<http://user.xmission.com/~legalize/fractals/fotd/about.html>
A near perfect partly cloudy summer day with a temperature of
84F 29C passed uneventfully here at Fractal Central today. The
two fractal cats, now almost impossible to tell apart from a
distance, took it easy most of the time. The most excitement
happened when Jasmine got excited about a flock of butterflies
that appeared in the fractal garden in the afternoon. Luckily,
the fractal humans made it through the day without getting so
excited.
The next FOTD will be posted in a day or a few. Until whenever,
take care, and do we observe a world that is really out there,
or do we create the world by our act of observing it? Goofy
occultists and rational quantum scientists both say things that
imply that we create the world as we observe it, though the
scientists, who must maintain an air of reason and respectabil-
ity, cannot state such apparently irrational things outright.
