FOTD -- June 26, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-3)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is a scene moderately deep in the southwest branch
of the valley enclosing the large period-3 sub-bud on the
northwest shore line of the main bud of the Mandelbrot set.
The math aspect of the image rates only a 3. After 30 years of
exploration, there is little new math stuff to be found in the
Mandelbrot set, at least at today's depth of just under 10^(10).
The art aspect rates a 7 however. This is in recognition of the
modicum of extra effort I put into the colors, which originated
with one of the built in color palettes of Fractint.
The name "Retrogression" implies a turning back to earlier
times, and as far as fractals go, it is hard to turn back to
anything earlier than the Mandelbrot set.
The most unusual thing in the image is the un-necessarily high
maxiter, which causes the solid black background that brings out
the underlying patterns. Something extra was needed. In the
M-set, unless something special is done, the higher order
valleys tend to look more and more alike.
The calculation time of one minute is a rough estimate. But
regardless of the machine, the wait will be brief. And visiting
the web sites can eliminate all waiting.
Avoid the chore of calculation by checking the finished image on
the FOTD web sites at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
<http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html>
<http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/>
<http://user.xmission.com/~legalize/fractals/fotd/about.html>
After a day of thunder yesterday, today turned out quite
pleasant, with partly cloudy skies, lower humidity and a
temperature of 86F 30C. Both the fractal cats and humans
approved of the conditions, though the younger cat appeared
more concerned with pigeons than the weather.
The next FOTD will be posted in the near future. Until the near
future arrives, take care, and the more books I read that try to
explain quantum mechanics, the more I realize that over-educated
physicists are making claims even goofier than the mystics and
paranormal believers whose claims they so vigorously try to
deny. In today's world, I often wonder what ever happened to
the days when studying science led to clear rational thinking?

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is named "Sin of Commission", but don't expect any
subliminal racy scenes in the image. The name refers to the
color intensification of the image, which I did in an outside
color program. Since I sometimes consider such superfluous
image manipulation to be cheating, I have admitted my sin in the
name I gave the image. The questionable manipulation did raise
the color rating from a 5 to an 8 however, so maybe my misdeed
was not as bad as implied.
The math aspect rates a 5 however, and there is no way to raise
it. The scene lies deep in East Valley of the large minibrot on
the main spike of the Mandelbrot set, an area that has been
thoroughly explored at least down to the depth of over 10^14 of
today's image.
Since arbitrary precision math is necessary at this depth, the
image is a slow one, taking around 20 minutes on a SOTA unit.
But all is not lost, for the 20 minute wait may be avoided by
checking the image on the web sites.
The finished image is posted at:

Partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 86F 30C, along with
high humidity, kept today on the muggy side here at Fractal
Central. The fractal cats kept their eyes on the pigeons that
have found their way into the porch roof, while the humans made
sure the other things were under control.
The next FOTD will be posted in a day or two. Until then, take
care, and live without fear, for the aliens from Arcturus are
here to protect us.

FOTD -- June 22, 2014 (Rating A-5,M-5)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's unexceptional image lies in the 'East Valley' of the
fractal that results when 0.5 part of Z^2 is subtracted from
Z^11. At the center lies a minibrot surrounded by disconnected
and distorted elephants. The logmap has been intentionally set
too high to create the effect of surrounding darkness.
The name "Random Messenger" has nothing to do with the
appearance of the image. It refers to my instinctive feeling
that there is more information hidden in these fractal patterns
than meets the eye.
The art and math both rate a 5, which shows that the hidden
information remains quite well hidden, at least in today's image.
The calculation time of 2-3/4 minutes is around FOTD average --
slow enough to cause a bit of impatience yet fast enough to keep
interest high. The image is also available on the web sites.
The web sites may be accessed at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>

Lots of sun, a photoshop-blue sky filled with white cottonpuff
clouds and a temperature of 82F 28C made today one of the best
of the summer. Since this is only the second day of summer,
there is much time for even better days. The young fractal cat
Jasmine busied herself watching pigeons, while the older cat
Nicholas kept the unwanted prowling tomcats at bay. The humans
passed the day trying to be relaxed, which in today's hectic
world is rather hard to do.
The next FOTD will be posted. By not stating exactly when, I am
avoiding unfulfilled promises. Until whenever, take care, and
from what I read in the current popularized quantum books,
(Unpopularized quantum theory is nothing but incomprehensible
math.), we might be surrounded by an infinity of alternate but
equally real worlds. I would sure like to meet some of these
alternate versions of myself, who have avoided making some of
the wrong choices that this version of myself has already made.

FOTD -- June 21, 2014 (Rating A-6,M-8)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
It has been two days since the last FOTD was posted, but have no
concern. This delay is not a sign of another looming FOTD
drought. There is simply a lot of catching up yet to do here at
FC.
Today's image is part of a near-Julia set lying in the Julibrot
that results when a Mandelbrot set is strongly corrupted even on
its surface by Z^(2.5)+C energies.
I have added to the interest by rendering the scene with the
inside set to 'fmod', thereby creating the circular features.
The name "Fractal Yuletime" refers to the pinkish triangular
shape at the center, which rather resembles a Christmas tree.
The art rating of a 6 shows that I consider the artistic worth
merely average. The math rating of an 8 indicates that I
consider the math aspect more interesting than the artistic
aspect.
The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes will cause little
impatience, and the little impatience it does cause may be
eliminated by viewing the image on the web sites.
Avoid calculation by checking the finished image at:

Clouds and rain kept things suppressed here at Fractal Central
two days ago, but yesterday and today brought nothing but sunny
skies and a temperature of 79F 26C. The fractal cats, who are
now almost impossible to tell apart, celebrated the fine
conditions by getting into a heated tussle. The humans, who are
becoming ever more wrapped up in world events, passed the day
admiring the fractal garden.
The next FOTD will be posted in a day or maybe two. Until then,
take care, and it's about time to dig into the huge backlog of
e-mail here at FC.

It is *only* being sent to the [Fractint] list.
I'm testing to see if a new requirement has been added
when the new version of the mailing list and archive
software was recently installed:
Conjecture:
-----------
Only emails with a *single* addressee (the [Fractint] List

A test post I made with *two* addressees seems to have
not been broadcast back to me. A complication is the
fact that I currently get a digest, and possibly not
enough posts have accumulated to force a digest to be
mailed...
I also did not see that 1st test post in the [Fractint]

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image takes us deep into the western HyperElephant
Valley of the Z^(3.01)+C Mandeloid. (There are two of them in
the parent fractal.) The valley actually forms a wedge, with
today's image lying deep in a small patch of chaos on the
southern edge of the wedge blade.
The art rates an 8 because I rather like the image. The math
rates a 6 because we have been here several times before.
The name "A Cubic Conundrum" refers to the cubic minibrot at the
center. It's not really a cubic minibrot of course, but the
difference is almost impossible to spot.

After a midsummerish day yesterday, with hot sun, high humidity
and a temperature of 90F 32C, we had a night of thunder and
rain, followed by a cloudy day today with occasional light rain
and a temperature of 72F 22C here at Fractal Central, which was
under-appreciated. During the hottest part of yesterday, the
fractal cats went into stretched-out mode in the coolest places
they could find. Today they curled up on the couch in comfort.
The fractal humans passed both days doing typical human things.
