FOTD 04-09-10 (Radically Different [9])

FOTD -- September 04, 2010 (Rating 9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is something different. In fact, it is so differ- ent that it might be called radically different, which is what I named it. The name is even more appropriate since I think it was Mr. Mandelbrot himself who gave the name 'radical' to the entire area of influence (filaments, stars, etc) associated with the familiar Mandelbrot buds. There is no doubt that the things lining the bottom edge of the frame in today's image are Mandelbrot buds. The doubt arises when the rest of the image is taken into consideration. Some- thing is definitely awry with the lesser-iteration stuff in the upper part of the frame. The scene is sliced at an angle only one degree from the Oblate direction, which means that in the undistorted parent fractal, (which is worth checking), the mandelbrot stuff, including the buds, are stretched in the horizontal direction to 57.29 times their normal extent. To correct this distortion, I squeezed the X-dimension of the parent down to 0.017455 of its normal value. The trig literate know why I used these values. This scrunching wreaked havoc with the lesser-iteration stuff, but it made quite an interesting image, once I worked on the coloring a bit. The resulting image resembles a sunset scene on a totally alien planet, where fractals are reality and material is imaginary stuff created by computers from material formulas. The rating of a superlative 9 includes a full point for the coloring. The calculation time of 10-1/2 minutes is a bit slow, but this drawback may be avoided by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Lots of heat continued here at Fractal Central on Friday, though the sun was weakened by high clouds from Hurricane Earl, which passed by 300 miles to the east during the day. Not being weather buffs, the fractal cats survived the temperature of 90F 32C by stretching on the cool kitchen floor. The humans had an average day. I'll be alone at FC on Saturday while FL attends a nephew's wedding in Havre de Grace, MD. This should give me a great opportunity to find a fractal or two. Look for the next FOTD in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and humanity surely is in a spot. It knows that the over-population will eventually overwhelm the earth's resources, and technology will not be able to save it, yet it is helpless to stop the run- away reproduction. . Fake is what I 1st thought. A fractal is a very intricate and complex image, generated mathematically. The best tattoo artist (and some of them are very good) could not accurately do it by looking at a picture and working, certainly not from memory or imagination. The best way would be for someone like us who is familiar with fractals to see the tattoo up close and personal and examine it for detail. Aside from that, I vote it is a photoshop fake OR, most likely, as someone said, an ink transfer from a real image. .

FOTD 03-09-10 (Top of the Crop [6])

FOTD -- September 03, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due to a lack of time, today's image shows a lack of attention, which holds it to a rating of an unimpressive 6. To create the image I combined 1/2 negative part of Z^(-4.5) with 1-1/2 negative parts of Z^(-1.5) and added (1/C). The terraced effect was achieved by rendering the image with the inside set to 'tdis'. The name "Top of the Crop" is a bit mis- leading. Actually, the image is the top of nothing. The calculation time of 2-5/6 minutes is reasonable, but even this brief wait may be avoided by viewing the already-calculated image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> As for that photograph of the tattooed woman on the web site, I don't think the photo is faked. The foreshortening where the fractal wraps around the woman's sides would be difficult to pull off this convincingly. Most likely the fractal is some kind of dye transfer, and the woman and photographer planned the picture together. The effect would have been more convin- cing if they had eliminated the iteration bands. Far too much heat filled the air here at Fractal Central on Thursday. The temperature of 97F 36C was made bearable only by the relatively low humidity. The fractal cats must have agreed, for they clung to the cool kitchen floor like flies to flypaper. My day was busier than expected, but things should slow to a more reasonable pace on Friday. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Techno straight lines

Fractint can make lots more than minibrots. If you save the image to your hard-drive and use a graphic editor to enlarge the view, you can see portions of the fractal image on top of the straps. Plus there are pixels distortions in several places: • the chain of the necklace • lower right elbow • etc... I don't know about anybody else but to analyze the fractal design I couldn't even start without the original par file. Or is that getting obsessive compulsive? Roger Alexander

FOTD 02-09-10 (Disgraced Minibrot [8.5])

FOTD -- September 02, 2010 (Rating 8.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows a minibrot in the East Valley of the second largest minibrot on the main spike of the Mandelbrot set. Yes, yes, I know that the parent fractal is not exactly a Mandelbrot set, nor is the thing at the center of today's image a fully- formed quadratic minibrot. The parent fractal is a M-set only on its surface. Deep inside, where today's image lies, it takes on Z^1.99 characteristics. And yes, I realize that the conventional Z^1.99 Mandeloid has a very rudimentary main spike, but the negative value of the second parameter in today's formula reverses things, and instead of absorbing the spike, broadens and fractalizes it, as would be expected in a Z^2.01 Mandeloid. I named today's image "Disgraced Minibrot". The sorry excuse of a minibrot at the center of the image certainly is a disgrace to minibrotdom. Actually, it is more of a Z^1.99 minibrot than a Z^2 one. And I'm also uncertain as to whether it's a fully critical minibrot or a perturbed one. Whatever it is, its sur- rounding pattern is unexpectedly striking. The mini-something at the center does indeed deserve a closer look, though that will have to wait for another day and another FOTD. Quite a bit of the rating of an unusually high 8.5 was earned by the coloring, an aspect of fractals to which I have been giving more attention lately. The calculation time of 2-1/2 minutes is reasonable, but if this is still beyond reason, check the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> An episode with a bit of political opinion is included at the bottom of the parameter file. Those who prefer to avoid the annoyance of dissenting political views should not venture there. Too much heat and increased humidity made Wednesday a forget- table day here at Fractal Central. The high temperature of 95F 35C was anything but comfortable, a fact that the fractal cats could agree with as they stretched on the cool kitchen floor. Except for a minor political squabble with FL, my day was fair enough. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and I became a cynic because I prefer to be right.
