FOTD -- September 27, 2010 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's surreal scene is named "New Elephant View". The name shows that it is a new view of East Valley of the Mandelbrot set, which is sometimes called Elephant Valley. The Mandelbrot set is a two-dimensional slice through the center of the four-dimensional Julibrot figure, which results when the expression Z^2+C is iterated. (Two complex numbers equals four variables.) The Mandelbrot set does not slice the Julibrot figure into two separate parts however. It simply cuts a two-dimensional hole through the Julibrot. A three-dimensional slice would be needed to make the Julibrot fall apart. Nor is the Z=0,0 slice the only slice of the Julibrot that produces the familiar M-set shape. I suspect but do not know for sure that there are an infinite number of two-dimensional slices of the Julibrot that produce Mandelbrot sets. Since the Julibrot is four-dimensional, it has six mutually perpendicular two-dimensional slices through every point. Two of these orientations are quite familiar -- the Mandelbrot and Julia directions. The names of the other four orientations are my own inventions -- the Oblate, Rectangular, Parabolic and Elliptic directions. Today's scene slices the Julibrot in the Rectangular direction, thus it may properly be called a Rectangular set. In the image, the vertical direction is the imag(z) axis, while the horizontal direction is the imag(c) axis, thus the scene is a hybrid -- 1/2 Mandelbrot and 1/2 Julia. The slice is offset 0.5 in the real(z) direction. With all this technical stuff and not too much image to work with, I could not give the image a rating. Setting the inside to something like 'bof60' or 'atan' adds more detail to the scene, though I prefer the stark black background of inside=0. The calculation time of only 49 seconds simply oozes conveni- ence. . hey Mike, you sure you got the right map? I am trying to get that awesome color on this page: http://www.fracton.org/fmlposts/spidrweb.html and it ain't happening. The colors look washed out red - not the same at all. I tried using the colors in the palette PAR file, also downloaded the chakotay map from PNL collection - same thing. Whats up? .

FOTD -- September 26, 2010 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: There was no antiquing trip on Saturday, but I did get talked into an expedition to a large gardening store in Brickerville. Actually, it was a rather pleasant trip, especially when FL and I stopped at a great little restaurant on the way back to FC, where I enjoyed Maryland crab cakes in Pennsylvania. When we finally did get back to FC, it was past sunset, and I doubted that I would have time to get the FOTD posted on time; but my luck in the fractal world was exceptional, and I found today's image on the first try. I named the image "In a Minor Seahorse" because its parent Mandeloid is so twisted that is is nearly impossible to discern the main period-2 bud at a quick glance. But by counting the arms of the stars, I soon found the main bud, which is actually one of the smaller buds on the shore line of the main bay. Today's scene lies in the valley leading to this bud, which actually is the Seahorse Valley of the parent Mandeloid. I rated the image at an 8. If I had had more time to work on the colors, I might have raised the rating to a 9. But even a rating of an 8 is a bargain when the calculation time is a mere 1-2/3 minutes. FOTD 25-09-10 (HyperSplendor Brot [6.5])

FOTD -- September 25, 2010 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "HyperSplendor Brot", an exaggeration if ever there was one. I found it in the HyperMandelbrot set, though I suspect that the same scene exists unchanged in the standard M-set. If it does, this same minibrot would be impossible to track down however. If the image is simply another everyday Mandelbrot-set scene, it rates a 6; but if it is a scene unique to the HyperMandelbrot set, then it rates a 7. Since I have no idea whether it's unique or not, I compromised by rating the image at a 6.5. I spent a little extra time on the coloring, but not enough to add to the worth. The calculation time of 2-3/4 minutes is very near FOTD average. Unless the internet is jammed, the trip to the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> to view the completed image, will also be about average. Summer returned with a vengeance here at Fractal Central on Friday, as the temperature reached 93F 34C and the typical midsummer haze filled the air. Early in the afternoon the fractal cats took to the cool tile of the kitchen floor and moved only to avoid the moving afternoon sun, which strikes the floor quite strongly at this time of year. I saw a thumbnail of a nice image on the FractInt Deep Zoom webpage. The image looked interesting but at the time there was no parameter file. What was there, was a short description of the history behind this image by Dewey Odhner. Quoting the FractInt Deep Zoom webpage: "This is a deepzoom image into the Mandelbrot using 63 decimal digits of precision. Dewey started this fractal and posted the partial image on the net when it was 2/3 completed after expending approximately 2343 hours of calculation time on a 486/33 computer." Wow, 2343 hours and still only a partial image. How did he ever find it and zoom in on a fractal that draws that slow? FOTD -- September 24, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene in the East Valley of a parent fractal shaped like a hyperbola. The hyperbola is actually a Mandelbrot set whose western regions have enlarged to the point of infin- ity. (If the imag(p1) parameter is reduced ever so slightly, the M-set expands beyond infinity and, as is the nature of hyper- bolas, returns from the opposite direction.) I rated the image at a 7 despite my dislike of pastel shades. FL likes pale light tints and thought the image should be rated at a 9. Actually, I did tone down the pastel effect a bit since I rated it. The name "Candied Decoration" carries the feeling of the scene. The calculation time of 2 minutes is near FOTD average. The waiting time may be trimmed by viewing the completed image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Thursday here at Fractal Central began with fog. The fog lifted by 10am, revealing a cloudy sky. But by midday the clouds cleared away, leading to a midsummer-like afternoon, with plenty humidity and a temperature of 84F 29C. A small shower developed in the southwest at sunset, but moved off peacefully to the south and dissipated. The fractal cats watched none of this, missing the awe and wonder. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and do Atheists hold religious belief or not? They do not believe in God or heaven, which implies they hold no religious beliefs; but as I see it, they do believe that no god or heaven exists, which means they do hold a belief about religious things --they believe it's all a feel-good superstition. I guess it's just word play. And as for my beliefs--we'll skip that for now. FOTD -- September 23, 2010 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is late because desktop computers work very poorly without electricity. Don't blame me; blame whatever you call it -- fate, luck, God, karma, or simply forget the whole thing by pointing out that annoying things are a well-known part of life. Today's late FOTD is a quick journey to Seahorse Valley of a minibrot on a filament extending from a sub-bud on the northwest shoreline of the bud centered around -1.3 on the negative X-axis of the Mandelbrot set. I gave the image no rating because I put no extra effort into it. We have the richness of the M-set to thank for the image existing at all. The name "Hurried Minibrot" is a statement of fact. The zippy calculation time of 9 seconds is mostly due to some clever programming tricks of the Fractint team. The finished image will soon be posted on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> A midsummer-type day prevailed here at Fractal Central on Wednes- day, with a temperature of 86F 30C and lots of sun. But at 5pm a sudden thunder-storm moved in, bringing torrential rain, winds gusting to 65mph, 100kph and crackling thunder. The storm moved off as fast as it arose, but FC was left in the dark until just after midnight. The fractal cats were spooked by the loud thun- der, and ducked into the closet, but when things calmed down, the lack of lights bothered them not at all. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and one place where you never want to get lost is the Mandelbrot set.
