FOTD -- September 13, 2010 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Being far behind in nearly everything, I cheated a little today and found a quickie fractal in the Mandelbrot image that was posted to the list on Sep 11 by Roger Alexander, using a formula that was created by Paul Carlson in 1998. Since the Sep 11 image is basically a tricked-out Mandelbrot set, I found today's scene by checking Seahorse Valley of the classic M-set for a minibrot and transferring the coordinates to the Sep 11 image. Some parameter tweaking was necessary, but in the end I turned up a fractal (if that's what it is) that I felt worthy of granting FOTD status to. Since the image is not of my own origin, (I used the Sep 11 color palette as well), I could not rate it. The name "Carlson Minibrot" gives recognition to the writer of the formula. The calculation time of just under 3 minutes is brief enough to make calculation almost a joy. The image may also be viewed in finished form on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Ample sun and a temperature of 81F 27C made for an acceptable mid-September day here at Fractal Central on Monday. (I'm still a day behind on the FOTD's, so the weather is for the day of the FOTD.) The fractal cats must have been totally satisfied. They gave no comment, verbal or otherwise, about the weather. FOTD -- September 15, 2010 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is another quick one. I intentionally chose a quick image in the Mandelbrot set to give myself a chance to get caught up. The name of today's image, "Way Out on the Spike", describes the location. The scene lies in a valley on the north shore line of the 12th bud out the main spike. The location is remote enough to earn a rating, in today's case, a rating of an average 5. The problem preventing a higher rating is that all minibrots out here tend to look the same. Of course, the problem might also be that I have never searched the area carefully enough. The calculation time of 2-3/4 minutes is already fast enough, but the image may be seen even faster by surfing to the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> and viewing the finished product there. The Tuesday conditions here at Fractal Central were described in the FOTD for Sep 14, which was posted a day late. FOTD 09-09-10 (Negative Minibrot [7])

FOTD -- September 09, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows a normal minibrot in the upper left and an anti-minibrot in the lower right. It's rather rare to find such an evenly matched pair this close together, so I had no choice but to color the scene and declare it FOTD for September 9. The name "Negative Minibrot" describes the image pretty accu- rately. The rating of a 7 is based mostly on the mathematical interest. I put little effort into the coloring. The calculation time of 1-3/4 minutes is well within reason. As always, the finished image may be viewed at leisure on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> The wind was a bit blustery here at Fractal Central on Wednes- day, but everything else was near perfection, with brilliant sun, only a few small cottonpuff cumulus clouds, low humidity and a temperature of 81F 27C. The fractal duo of cats enjoyed things to the fullest. My day was satisfactory. FL's day was pretty good also, though she really could use some rain on her gardens. Can anyone teach me how to make bigger drawings in the new Winfract? The "Dell" control only allows a 800X600 pixels image and I do not know how to show in the screen the disk generated images. Marcus Rezende

The difference is in the map! The purple, blue and red remind me of the vampire movies of my youth, and the atmosphere of the sinister supernatural. Even now occasionally the appearance of Count Dracula and his minions on a late night movie will send a chill up my spine. Count Mandelbrot, vampire. Setup took time - I ended up varying 4 parameters simultaneously, much experimenting done. Render of 1000 frames took only a few hours on my screamin' demon Alienware Area51 system.
