the original demos for alice where probably recorded in 91 when waits was working on getting the play "alice" started. thought the play didnt get off the ground until late '92. so somewhere between 91 and 92 the alice demos were recorded. from what i understand the demos were stolen from tom's car at some point and then bootlegged. i guess that tom had forgotten all about them until (a year or so ago) when a fan gave him a copy of the bootleg and this led the the re-recording and recent release of the album "alice" my two cents: i personally prefer most of the demo versions to the new album. hope that helps. take care - mike

BUT, when you make limited editions and then never reprint them -- even your "classic" albums -- that is the kind of think that can happen I guess. I was so happy to finally find a copy of 'Horse Cock Phepner' on cassette when they played here in SF (a few copies made their way to Amoeba at a higher price). They were selling some other very rare stuff too. Someone mentioned 330,003 Crossdressers -- unfortunately it's out of print (both on CD and LP). It's not easy to find. If anyone knows where to find a reasonably priced copy, let me know (I have most of it on tape). Also, if anyone wants to trade tapes/CDRs (although I don't have a burner) of out-of-print SCG stuff, get in touch with me... I'm not an old-guard collector, but I have a few semi-hard-to-find things. As for the Carnival Folkore series, it seems like they weren't trying to hard eaerly on but the later volumes (especially 8/The Handsome Stranger and 9-10/Hi Asia/Lo Pacfic) are great. 6 and 7 also have their moments... Another turntablist of note is Janek Schaefer, who participated in the last Whitney biennial as a sculptor for his three-armed 'Tri-Phonic' turntable. I listened today to his recent live recording, Petit Theatre de Mercelis, with a live mix by electronics composer Leo Kupper. Fabulous soundscape with lots of loops made from the vinyl dead space outside the tracks, along with other droney soundscapes. Highly recommended. -- Caleb Deupree cdeupree(a)erinet.com

if making 'illicit' reproductions lies somewhere on the moral low ground, so does distributing culture for profit. that's if we have to judge things in absolute moral terms. the artist must respect the listener's 'judgment', just as the listener respects the artist's craft. we're all swimming in the same bullshit. we all have our rationalizations for what we do. when I have my band's first legit CD pressed next year (if I can afford it), I'll have to put a price tag on it. from one point of view, it's a necessary evil in the capital-dominated plane of reality, from another it will never cost as much as it's worth (regardless of the opinion of reviewers or those whose tastes run askance, whose ranks will no doubt be voluminous). Stockhausen chooses to recognize that value by somewhat prohibitively pricing his CDs. Matthew Barney makes his films extremely difficult to obtain. being of a more humble disposition, I'll take a gamble on the opposite tack. the point is that there's give and take in the relationship that goes beyond strict numerical exchange. I think it would. Mass culture will always have something to pacify themselves with...McDonalds, James Bond, Star Wars Episode III, Romanace Novels, SUV's...I just like to see them struggling right now. When things like Mariah Carey happen to EMI - I love it. The major entertainment industry have shot themselves in the foot. Rick Bishop on guitar / Alan Bishop on bass / Charles Gocher on drums is their usual set up. They all sing at various times. Sometimes Alan will play guitar as well. Sometimes they will all play any kind of instruments they can get ahold of. I saw them play a show in San Francisco recently where they didn't even bring out their guitars. They just played gamelan instruments and other items. The only records I know of that feature Eyvind are "330,003 Cross Dressers from Beyond the Rig Veda", "Dulce" and Charlie Gocher's "Pint Sized Sparticus". Other than that I am not too sure. Their discography is freaking huge. Alan told me the other day that they have another 200 records waiting to be released. Eyvind was supposed to play with them at their Seattle show this last Saturday night, but apparantly hurt his shoulder in the pit at the Cannibal Corpse show earlier in the evening at the same club.
