Can anyone explain the social dynamics on exhibitition last nigt at the Bimhuis, by Frisell and friends jamming along with smiles while simultaneously on stage their disenfranchised miserable Senegalese bandmate taps along perfunctorily and meaninglessly on his djembe? The joke was if we had a videocamera it would have been the best thing for black liberty since Rodney King. puzzled...

<<i went to a rova show a few months back (improvising with nels cline and some others) here in sf. the drummer's name was ches smith... he looked really young and impressed the shit out of me :) he's in a band called theory of ruin i haven't heard at all. i also recognized him from the cobra performance in sf earlier this year. does anyone know anything else about him? any good cds to check out?>> i think he also toured with mr. bungle on the last leg of their tour for 'california' in place of william winant. let's see, i am not a big fan of theory of ruin's type of aggro-math-groove rock/metal (although people who are into shellac, jesus lizard, or the guitarist/singer's old band, fudge tunnel, might be), but they are tight and i guess good at what they do. (in fact, i have a copy of their cd ... if you're in sf...). he also "slums" in a band called murder murder here in sf, which has a rotating lineup but almost always with two drummers, and recently he has often been one of them. that calls for less chops and more all-out wildness (in sets of 10-12 min. max). they are usually pretty fun and destructive. on the more "pedigreed" side of things, the bayimproviser.com web site lists some other stuff about him, too. will

Giant Squid Productions and the Union Programming Board present the Oklahoma Neighbors Friday Oct 25, 2002, at 7:30, JFJO (Tulsa, OK) and the ills (Norman, OK) will take the stage together in Meacham Auditorium located in the Oklahoma Memorial Union of the University of Oklahoma (900 Asp Ave Norman, OK 73069). The 2 cds are quite clearly marked as disc 1 and disc 2/3. They are different, in case you are wondering. Alan E. I've just got to wade in on this drummer subject. Bozzio is definitely one I'd mention. His album with David Torn and Mick Karn is excellent. I've always considered Bill Bruford a favorite. He has such a broad dynamic range. His most recent Earthworks incarnation is worth listening to. I just picked up Arcana with Tony Williams, Bill Laswell, et al., and find his playing to be quite tasteful. Unfortunately one of his last recordings. Billy Cobham has always been incredible to watch. Amazing and he makes it look so easy. Growing up, Ginger Baker was my hero although he has gone in a direction that I find less than satisfying. I need an act to play on Friday, Nov 22 (and any/every Friday after January!), at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Memorial Union, in der Rathskellar, 4-6pm. It is part of the weekly "Behind the Beat" jazz series, which is a free event. This is a well-known and well- frequented historical venue, a great opportunity for fledgling bands. If you or someone you know would like to do this, please let me know. We have a broad definition of jazz, so don't be afraid. The only requirements are that you can perform for two hours, and that you fit within our budget. If you are interested, email me with the name of your act, a description (or even better, a sound sample), credentials, and a requested artist fee. I too like the records with Bill Frisell, but the one that gets me every time, is also Garbarek's first (I think), and one of the very first couple records ECM ever put out: AFRIC PEPPERBIRD, from 1969 IIRC. The band is all-star, featuring the same drummer from NUDE ANTS, doing his bad-ass fusion skittery-rhythm thang under some intense beautiful guitar playing by Terje Rypdal. I can't recommend this record highly enough; Jan sounds incredibly muscular and leaves us wondering futilely: what could Coltrane have done if he'd lived a few more years and gotten into rock music, funk, and fusion? First, I just wanted to let anyone who's interested know that Eugene Chadbourne is playing tomorrow (Sunday 20th) at Mother Fool's coffee house in Madison. It's not listed on his website. Marc Ribot is tonight at the Orpheum. I'm excited for both... Anyone seen Chadbourne recently? What are his concerts like? There's a chance that I might not be able to go, so I just wondered if anyone had opinions as to how hard I should try to get there. graham
