Hi, thought someone might be able to help me on this. I just sold this AMM two disc set to someone who says that it contains a duplicate of the first disc instead of the true disc two. I never really gave them too careful a listen, but I was sure it was the correct disc even though they are both numbered the same. I did buy the set myself off of someone on this list not too long ago, but I guess I'm just wondering if it's common knowledge at all that this set has a quirk to it. As much as I find it hard to believe that the guy who bought it can't tell the difference, I'm also embarassed that I thought I could if they are indeed the same! But if they are, I'll hang my head in shame and then maybe someone can give me a contact for Matchless? Not really a comment on the rhythm section but generally, when I first got that NY Art Quartet ESP LP, it was really hard to get my ears into what they were doing. Milford Graves doesn't even seem to be on the same planet really but rather orbiting them or something. And LeRoi Jones' poem was somewhat offensive (and I'm not even white). But after many listens, I can't listen to that School Days version of Rosmosis anymore. It's like Vandermark took this piece and took out most of the searching, yearning, explorative quality and turned it into a piece to blow on. Well, I'm a pretty big drum freak, so watch out! As far as solo drum/percussion CDs I'm very fond of the following and listen to them often: John French - O Solo Drumbo - amazing solo drum cuts from the Magic Band drummer including some songs from Trout Mask Replica Terry Bozzio - Drawing The Circle -This really showcases his abilities and his concepts as of drum orchestra. Christian Vander - Korusz Live drum only tracks from Magma's drummer/composer. Nothing short of thrilling. A 2CD set that's hard to find, but well worth tracking down. As far as full bands with drums go, my list is endless, but lately I've been inspired by: Flying Luttenbachers - Infection And Decline Mastodon - Remission Miles Davis - Filles De Kilemenjaro Just about anything Bill Bruford plays on (King Crimson, UK, latter-day Earthworks) Just about anything with Joey Baron. You can split Garbarek's work into 2 categories: his work with his group and his collaborations. The latter is where most of his most interesting work has been in recent years, but at the same time very hit-and-miss. His group has become very 'reliable', to put it kindly! My favourite group albums are the 2 with Bill Frisell (Paths, Prints and Wayfarer) and the one after with David Torn (It's Okay to listen to the Gray Voice. On these records Garbarek has got into his now familiar compositional stride, having worked off his early free jazz influences in favour of a much sparser approach, incorporating Norwegian folk melodies. In Garbarek, Eberhard Weber on bass, Jon Christensen (and to a lesser extent Michael Di Pasqua) and Frisell, then Torn you have 4 original voices on their respective instruments, playing with great restraint. As for collaborations, top of my list is Atmos with Miroslav Vitous. He's also made some great records with Ralph Towner (Dis and Solstice) and Deer Wan by Kenny Wheeler is something of a classic, but these probably aren't the best places to start. Perhaps get the recent Rarum compilation, see what you like and take it from there. Luckily for you I'm away from home and doing this from memory, otherwise I could have gone on even longer. Dave. Giant Squid Productions and the Union Programming Board present the Oklahoma Neighbors Friday Oct 25, 2002, at 7:30, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (Tulsa, OK) and the ills (Norman, OK) will take the stage together in Meacham Auditorium located in the Oklahoma Memorial Union of the University of Oklahoma (900 Asp Ave Norman, OK 73069). Tickets for the show are $10 and advanced reservations are available by contacting kasra(a)ou.edu. The box office will open at 5:00, all reserved tickets must be purchased by 6:30 or they will be put back into general circulation. Madar and Officium are both great. If you've never heard Garbarek before I would strongly suggest keith jarrett's album "Nude Ants". It's two discs of mostly improvised live tracks. Some parts are a little cheezy but more than forgivable for all the great playing. And if you're like me and can't help but be amused when Jarrett starts moaning and drooling all over the piano this is also a good album because there is just enough of the drool to be funny and not be distracting. Good drumming, perhaps? According to Downtown Music Gallery: CYRO BAPTISTA - Beat the Donkey (Tzadik 7608) Featuring special guests Marc Ribot, John Zorn, Erik Friedlander, Jamie & Vanessa Saft, Peter Scherer, Romero Lubambo, Kevin Breit and Cyro's fabulous percussion ensemble - Beat the Donkey! Brazilian madman percussion wizard - Cyro Baptista, has played with just about everybody, a list would fill this page. Seeing and hearing Cyro in the Bar Kokhba Chamber Masada, Zorn improv sets and in the new Electric Masada, show how much of an incredible and completely unique percussionist he really is. His crazed percussion and chanting ensemble, Beat the Donkey, have been around for the past few years and their sets are always marvelous, intoxicating fun. This wonderful and wild release blends the band with all sorts of special guests and is a blast. "The Crab and the Shining Star" features Cyro's cool voice, some sick/heavy fuzz guitar from Viva De Concini and pounding percussion from Beat the Donkey. Cyro blows into bottles on "Sapo and the Prince" to create the sunny, funky, subtle rhythm backing Luciana Souza's enchanting voice and Romoero Lubambo's nylon string guitar. Marc Ribot provides the central groove and lovely solo on his nylon string guitar on "Cyrandeiro", another breezy Brazilian tune. One of the great and distinctive things about Cyro is the odd percussion instruments he uses - metal refrigerator drawers, ceramic pots, metaliphones, piramids, vacuum cleaner hoses and exotic things like surdo, pandeiro, hadgini, rayong and a tamborim machine. This allows Cyro and his other percussionists to create unique worlds of percussion based sounds. Four pieces feature just exotic percussion and each one is fascinating and completely different in textures and beats. "Sweet Cuica" has a hypnotic cuica or squeeze drum groove with jaw harp, tubes and metal percussion. Ribot whips out his trusty electric wah-wah guitar and wails on "O Canto Da Ema", but it is the wacky vocals by Tisza Coela and Cyro that really provide the strange magic. "Parar de Fumar" is another fun, Brazilian groove tune with cute vocals, nylon string guitar, clarinet and subtle percussion. Erik Friedlander on cello and Peter Scherer on synth add their dreamy sounds to "Anatacia", while Kevin Breit (steel or slide guitar), John Zorn (squealing sax) and Toninho Ferragutti (accordion) add their unique sounds to "Mr. Bugaloo". The final piece "Funk I/Live at La Plaza" is another intoxicating percussion fest by Beat the Donkey and also includes their performance on video as well.
