Actually, and this is from the April 21, 1962 issue of Down Beat, the reviewer is relating a conversation he had with Dolphy: "He described how bird calls had been recorded and then slowed down in playback; the bird calls had a timbre similar to a flute. Conversely, he said, a symphony flutist recorded these bird calls, and when the recording was played at a fast speed, it sounded like birds." Dolphy went on to explain how birds sang using notes that were not on the western scale, and that he was thus inspired to play using quarter tones, and that he thought it was pretty. Hi. Just after writing my last message, I checked the Tzadik page and just read about the two album I mentioned and they actually sound even more interesting than I remembered. Check it out: Rabbinical School Dropouts: Cosmic Tree The Rabbinical School Dropouts is as crazy a group of kooks as you could want. Sun Ra, the Hampton Grease Band, Frank Zappa and the Klezmatics all rolled into one, the music of the Friedmann brothers is fresh and imaginative. Their ten-member big band (featuring oboe, mandolin, bassoon, theremin, toy piano, tablas, etc.) storms through a dozen creative originals touching upon klezmer, jazz, funk, Latin, rock, and varied mishegoss along the way. Jewish garage jazz with a sick sense of humor from Long Beach, California. Frank London: Scientist at Work Originally released in 1999 in a privately pressed limited edition, this is much more than a re-release. Alchemically transformed by John Zorn through radical remixing, editing and overdubs by downtown superstars Mark Feldman, Erik Friedlander, Cyro Baptista, Jamie Saft (and Zorn himself on sax), Scientist at Work is a dynamic collaboration in the Miles Davis/Teo Macero tradition. Featuring standout work by the late Thomas Chapin on saxophones and bass flute, as well as the lyrical trumpet of bandleader/composer Frank London, this music touches on Jewish prayer, Afro-funk, Jazz fusion, Middle Eastern Taqsim and more. The London one sounds like it's something quite new for Zorn. Does it really work!? I mean, if I read about a new Laswell album of "radical remixing, editing and overdubs" which mixed "Jewish prayer, Afro-funk, Jazz fusion, Middle Eastern Taqsim and more" it would take a whole lot before I would buy it ;-) But with Zorn, I'm kind of curious. AT least he hasn't done 500 of them before.... And yes, it's true, there now is Tzadik t-shirts! Frank London/radical jewish culture

I quite enjoy Frank London's Scientist at work. Some tracks at the beginning are reminiscent of 70s Miles Davis, then it ventures more toward a Jewish-avant garde feel. By far though, my favorite Radical Jewish Culture cds are by Tim Sparks. That guy is incredible. He's a guitar virtuoso right along side someone like Frisell. He's got a very roots feel, though he constantly borders on "over-playing." I haven't heard his third tzadik release, but his first two are top-notch. I assume that the last one is great as well with the addition of Ribot and Friedlander (plus Cohen and Baptista). Lest we also forget . .. . Yo! Ack! I forgot to mention how much I enjoy Steven Bernstein's two discs -- "Diaspora Soul" and "Diaspora Blues." Sex Mob is a terrific project, but I enjoy his solo albums even more. Funny you should mention the Radical Jewish Culture series this morning. Just last night I loaded my five-CD changer with Davka's "Judith" and "Lavy's Dream," Frank London's "Scientist at Work," Jenny Scheimann's "The Rabbi's Lover" and the New Klezmer Trio's "Short For Something." As the tunes shuffled through the evening I was awestruck by the consistent strength of the material. Not a bum track in the bunch. Last night listening experience inspired me to bring Danny Zamir's "Satlah" and "Live at Tonic: Exodus" as well as both of David Krakauer's Klezmer Madness discs to work today. While I don't own all of the RJC releases, I do own about 25 of them and I can say without hyperbole that I've enjoyed them all immensely. The Masada stuff is probably my favorite, but Davka and Krakauer follow close behind. Hell, even my officemate, who's a ZZ Top diehard, thinks "Klezmer, NY" rocks. hey i'm new to this list. i've been really getting into zorn for the past couple of months. i have his masada live in jerusalem( i believe thats the one), spy vs. spy, tableux( i hope i spelled it right, the two disc set of jewish arrangements of zorns without him playing on any tracks) and naked city. i was hopping some one could give me some sugesstions on albums to get of his harder edge experimental punk style with him playing sax albums. any help would be great. also, do most of the people on this list live in new york? if so, it must be nice. i live in god forsaken georgia. whenever i tell people i'm a saxophonist the first thing they ask is " do you like kenny g?". fucking a what a lame ass question to ask. anyways, i would really apreciate any help. thanks. john _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

"Phases of the Moon: Traditional Chinese Music" is one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. I've been listening to it regularly for more than 10 years and it is responsible for my interest in Chinese music. It's a compilation of different styles and ensembles. Very highly recommended. I see Amazon has it for $9.98 and it's a CBS/Sony product, so your favorite independent retailer should have no difficulty finding a copy. Martin
