Hello All, My favorite ones are: - Both Wolf Krakowski CDs - All three Coleman's Sephardic Tinge, Roberto - Juan Rodriguez "El Danzon de Moises" (I liked it much more after I saw them live) - Both Erik Friedlander CDs, but "The Watchman" is the better one - Davka "Lavy's Dream" - Both Satlah CDs - Frank London "Invocations" - Jamie Saft "Sovlanut" - Steven Bernstein "Diaspora Soul" - Marty Ehrlich "Sojourn" - Both John Zorn double CDs - Kletka Red "Hijacking" It looks like a long list, but almost all of the albums in RJC are at least interesting. Speaking about future GJM compilations, I don't have any idea what Zorn is going to put next if he even has any such plans, but what I know that he is preparing the 10th anniversary Masada tribute. Don't know who will be on this CD except MMW, who will definitely contribute one track. The other Zorn's active project is Electric Masada. Hopefully, he will record them sometime soon. And, at last, as far as I know, the man is preparing an album with female vocalists. Jennifer Charles should be one of them. No any other detail though. Olivier Messiaen was really down with bird calls, too. He spent a good deal of time and energy recording and transcribing birdsongs from around the world and using them as compositional tropes (the 'Turangalila' symphony and the piano works are good examples). There's a great section in Deleuze/Guattari's 'A Thousand Plateaus' about Messiaen, bird calls and territorialization. One interesting thing there that pertains directly to Dolphy and jazz/improv in general is the investigation of certain species (I think the chaffinch was the primary example) that riff off of other calls they hear in an improvisatory fashion. I often think of improvisation as staking out aural territories through building off of existing sounds/tropes. Wasn't 1999's Marvin Pontiac album the last thing released by Lurie? As far as I know, Lurie didn't perform any live gigs to support the album's release. Hi, I was just listening to "Saints" by Marc Ribot (pretty good album), and when the amazing John Lurie composition came, I suddenly realised how long ago it is since I last heard anything about Lurie. He is one of my favorite composers, and a pretty good saxophone player too. Is Lounge Lizards still active? Anybody seen him recently, or know of upcomming projects?? What was actually his last CD? And was "Men With Sticks" actually worth getting? I checked his webpage, and one of the last news updates was the following: "May 2, 2001. (source: Seth) We are sorry that we have not updated the site recently. John broke his ankle and was unable to get to his computer, and the rest of us in the office are very tired. Doctors feel that John may have to be put to sleep. We will all miss him very much." !??!!!!!!???!?!???!!???!????!???? Who would say that a discussion would be opened for Boban Markovic orchestra. Anyway, i had the opportunity to see this orchestra playing live with the Hungarian violin virtuoso Lajko Felix. You'll never believe what these brass/string instruments are capable of until you see these 2 parties playing together. Also an event to be seen is the festival at Gucha where these gypsy orchestras are performing and competing with each other. Best Nenad
