Rich, I love that site. I'll have to look for the Encke division with the 15". I'll use my 2X barlow to get my focal ratio down to f/9. Has anybody tried using a 4X Powermate barlow on Saturn or Jupiter? Debbie

Well I hope you are right. I personally have encountered several people who don't know anything about astronomy but know I have an involvement in it and who interpreted the newspaper and TV stories as portraying amateur Utah astronomers as a bunch of weirdos who have no regard for the environment or public safety. I spent some time explaining things to them and I think most of them finally had their misconceptions dispelled. I just hope the way they interpreted the stories is in the minority for everyone who read and saw them. It excites the imagination of the public partly because it relates ordinary objects, bowling balls, with extraordinary ones, meteorites -- and partly because of the sheer joy of dropping things from great height. It involves a resource that is peculiar to Utah, the salt flats. I think it's a fun story and nobody should be upset over it. With patience, everything will be worked out with the BLM and a classic experiment will catch the public's interest and answer a few questions too. Saturn

Too bad there was fog on Friday night for the Saturn watch. Tonight we started looking at the planet at about 6:15. It was a little chilly but the seeing was excellent until about 7:20 when some clouds started moving in. The view was spectacular both with our 90mm refractor and the 10" Dob. We used every combination of eyepieces and barlows that we have. We even tried a few color filters. I have never seen Saturn so clearly before. There is a lot to be said for winter observing. Larry

I should mention that the metal detector that I built was from plans that I found in a magazine or somewhere and not my own smarts. The coil was lacquered copper wire and rectangular in shape. It was a very simple instrument. Modern commercial detectors can be set to discriminate out all but certain metals so it may be possible to ignore brass shell casings. For the time being I would like to let things cool down a bit.
