One of my client ISP's has both USR hiperdsp's and Ascend MAX's. I've noticed that the Max's seem to perform better (ratio of successful connects, number of dropped connections) than the USR's, even when connecting to USR modems. About 2am this morning I had a flash of insight and drove into my office (I have a well-equipped home lab, but needed access to a 4-wire interface. Not much traffic at 2am, and no trouble finding a parking space downtown.) It was worth the trip, I think I hit pay dirt. What I tested was the level the server (ISP) modem was transmitting at. I was surprised to see that is was at -10dbm, which is quite hot. Beacuse of the way digital lines are coded, higher power levels have worse s/n ratios, there aren't at many quantitization bits available at higher powers. I plugged in my laptop, fired up tcm, and looked at the hiperdsp config. It was set for -11dbm. Hmmm. I set it for -15, and yup, I get -14 when I measure it. An off by one error someplace, no doubt. But it gets better. I call into our Max's and measured the level they were sending. Only -14dbm, much lower power, more what I was expecting. Telnet in and check to see what they are set to, -13dbm, another off by one, but this time in the opposite direction! (usr-tc) Telco cluster fsck

Battling with telco still over problematic CT1's in a remote pop. I found out they provisioned the lines as LINE SIDE (open mouth, insert gun, pull trigger) instead of TRUNK SIDE. Below is the email I sent them on how to provision the lines.........is their anything in it that would indicate I was asking for trunk side instead of line side service, because I know they are going to throw in my face "you didn't ask for TRUNK side specifically", so I am hoping that the provisioning info below would only be valid for trunk side service. I sent them: 1. Line Coding: B8ZS * AMI 2. Framing: ESF * SF 3. Trunk type: E&M II loop start ground start * 4. Trunk Start: wink immediate dial tone * 5. Password = read-write SNMP community string, if you enter the read-only string, you will be able to get into your NMC but you won't be able to modify anything ;-) To erase it go in the NMC console, select 1. Configuration and 14. PASSWORD Screen Enable/Disable then select 2. Disable. Then save the config to NVRAM. Robert > 2. You won't be able to use the dual v.35 nics behind an NMC- You might get the console up but I doubt if you'll ever get it to talk on the ethernet port. The Passwords are the community strings. They can be disabled after you get in with a menu option. If you can't get past the password then try flipping dipSwitch #6 up, that should bypass them. The red/green LED means that the NMC didn't see a network connection when it booted up. Howdy, 1. For my NMC I have a High Speed WAN/ Ethernet NIC, which has the console at the top then 2 v.35 then the 10BaseT at the bottom the seller told me that they were pulled from a working system, they mush have been used for Netservers because thats where the jumper was set to when they arrived. So I changed the jumper from NAC to NMC then inserted the NMC and it powers up with the Hub Status light red, the rn/fl light flashing between red and green and USR written on the 4 character display. I know the NMC works I have had it working in another rack. is there anything special I have to do when changing the High Speed WAN/Ethernet NIC from a netserver to a NMC. New code or something. My name is Paul... and I own an ARC chassis <group> Hi Paul Anyways... for everone out there using the most exellent Cistron Radius 1.5.4.3 daemon there is a bit of a problem with the checkrad.pl script that checks the simeltaneous-use on the ARC vi SNMP. When the radius acct packet comes in it has the port number prefixed with an S (S10, S1010) and the code did not strip out that letter before it built the OID to snmpget from the ARC. So basically is was never checking the arc to see if they were already logged in. So.. in all its glory... The attribute name I use is Calling-Station-ID. I can't remember if I had to add that to the dictionary or if it was in there already (I think it was in there but...).
