As far as 3Com is concerned, several months ago there was some talk to me about changing the non-hardware replacement support costs. Several days ago there was additional mention of a possible offering of telephone and code support independent of hardware support. I am hoping that they will consider the cost per chassis issue and make it afordable. I understand the linear increase in price for hardware replacement, but code and tech support requires a lot less intervention per chassis when they are in groups so the cost could and should drop significantly for multiple units (starting at two, not two hundred!). (usr-tc) TCH Latchup problems, continued

The latchup problem is begining to become a real issue here. It has occurred on all of our chassis's and seems to be an issue of the system no longer initiating new PPP sessions. Existing connections continue to work well, but new connections fail after the username/password phase. The systems are also much less tolerant of SNMP queries for online users as they have been in the past. Our radius software (Vircom) polls the TCH's to verify the current online user tables. When we are experiencing problems the HiperArc does not respond to the SNMP queries either which has the effect of wiping the online user list. We are running the latest available code (as of three weeks ago) and that is when this group of problems began. I have seen an improvement in connections to troublesome systems when the servers are working, but the downtime is becoming an issue. I really thought I could avoid ditching the TCH's for new equipment after the upgrade but that just doesn't look to be the case. I have done the math and I can buy new equipment with real tech support for an amount less than what I can sell my current systems for and the cost of phone support to 3Com (assuming that would help). That looks like the only real option left. Is anyone else seeing this problem? Could it be a configuration error? Any ideas? Does anyone know if the "Class" attribute is supported on the hiperARC or netserver? Here's the description from RFC2865: 5.25. Class Description This Attribute is available to be sent by the server to the client in an Access-Accept and SHOULD be sent unmodified by the client to the accounting server as part of the Accounting-Request packet if accounting is supported. The client MUST NOT interpret the attribute locally. PS - I tried searching the knowledgebase and the list for this answer but couldn't find it. I dug an old Netserver 8 v.34+ out of storage, and thought I'd load up the latest code, but I don't even *see* this product anywhere on totalservice. Anyone have any pointers? Can this be upgraded to v.90? I would like to change the login prompts on my Hiperarcs to be different for each modem. I can change the prompt for each modem using HARM, but I can't find a command using the CLI. The closest I can find is: set modem_GROUP slot:1 prompt "some prompt:" The problem is that this sets the prompt for the entire group, not for each modem. I assume that if I can change the prompt for each modem using HARM, that there must be a CLI command to do the same. Also, do the Hiper ARCs provide any system variables that can be used in prompts or messages, such as the current slot or modem? Hey guys. While reading through Boardwatch, I read an ad from Source Technologies and how V.92 is now possible with the TC. However, peruseing the 3Com site was useless... how many arms, legs and children is 3Com going to want for us to upgrade to V.92? And what equipment will upgrade? Next, while perusing the 3Com site, I tripped over the Total Control 2000 Access Multiplexer. Apparently this monster has DSP cards that run 672 ports at a shot. 3Com is selling these through it's online store, but the link didn't work. How much are these monsters going to go for? $100K? What else is going on with this new toy? Or do I have to add 1 and 1?
