Hi there. I have implemented graph monitoring of port usage on my 3Com chassis based on the MIBs for the Hiper NMC. However, I am looking into monitoring CPU and memory utilization on the Hiper ARC. Here we go again, the whiners so bitter you wonder why it is they stick around. Can we get a limit on the whining here? Please do feel free to leave the list, 3Com, the planet, as necessary, I and I'm guessing most on this list are sick to death of these tirades. If it sucks so bad, go. Otherwise shut the #@$%@#$^$ up unless you have something constructive, or at least new, for god's sake, to say. Which, by the way, thanks to those that have been posting constructively, it's been very enlightening lately. Even the stream on balanced/unbalanced was fascinating albeit...a tad off topic. Me and my (apparently) non-functional crappy equipement from Satan's company of choice (apparently) are just toooooo stupid to know how unhappy we really are. So you smart ones out there, you do that smart thing and go and leave us idiots here. Thanks. SMT BTW: any and all responses to this I'll trashcan immediatly, even if it's an attaboy, so I guess I wouldn't waste your time. I actually have a business to run donchyaknow.

Cisco AS51 async modem cables

Hello, all. I've been working with Steve Rivera trying to find some AS51 cables, and on second thought, the info is valuable to anyone still running (or needing in my case) to run AS51's, so I'm posting it for the general masses to absorb. I apologize if any of this info is 1) old, 2) redundant, 3) been covered before, or 4) so old nobody really cares :) Since the AS51 is essentially nothing more than a Cisco 2511 on a card, I just *assumed* all of the cables are compatible. Well, most are, console/aux, ethernet, sync serial all are. However, async serial is NOT. I've been occasionally whacking my head against the wall over the last few days, trying to get this blasted AS51 chassis to work properly. I'd been using a standard CAB-OCTAL-ASYNC cable with it, and no joy whatsoever. Worked like a champ attached to an NT server, as well as an external 2511. Well, after further digging, I think I have my answer, very unfortunately. Although Cisco's docs allude to the cables being compatible between AS51 and 2500 series routers, a few USENET posts (via Google) say otherwise. http://groups.google.com/groups?q=cab-as51-8&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en (Not sure if it will work, if it did, the last two hits and their parent postings are of interest) Cisco links are: http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/acs_fix/cis2500/2509… and http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/acs_serv/5100_sbd/51… Now, totally contrary to conventional thinking, a connector's pins are numbered the same, regardless of application, right? If you look at the tables showing the pinouts, and compare them, you'll see that they match up fine, with the only discrepancy being that the AS51 specific cable has pins 34 and 35 tied together. Well, assuming that Cisco would number the pins the same for two like connectors was the real mistake here. Notice the pin numbering looking *into* the connector! The pinout numbering is a mirror from one to the other. Not exactly a great move on Cisco's part, especially seeing that everything else is the same, IOS and all. Damn. And I'd be willing to bet that it was a PC board layout issue of some form (mirrored connector footprint or netlist numbering, schematic entry error, whatever) that caused it too. Rather than correct it so they do interchange, they create a new cable. Neat. So, I really *do* need the Cisco HD68 to dual HD50 cables. Their part number is CAB-AS51-8, and it appears that this is the only cable they sell for the AS51. I'm hoping that the NIC's aren't damaged as one posting hinted could happen. I knew better, "assume" something, you're going to get burned. I guess I should have turned to Google sooner. An educated guess tells me they should be OK, since most serial ports are short-circuit protected, etc., but at this point, all bets are off. Steve is looking for me (thanks Steve!), but if he comes up dry, I'm in the market for 6 (or probably more like 8 so I have spares) cable sets for the AS51. I don't want to make them, but have the resources to do so if I can't find them used or NOS, and I can't get them from Cisco anymore (reasonably). Thanks for your help! Brad

The TCM software is not a free product from 3Com. It can be acquired with the purchase of a annual service contract. If your lucky someone here on the lct ist may send you a copy. But based on Licensing rules most will hesitate. If you are interested in a service contract I can help you out. You'll need to get DSP code 5.2.103 in order to resolve these problems ; it's not available from the support sites yet, but you should be able to contact whoever supports your 3COM gear and have them send you a copy. I started seeing some users report slow connection speeds, and so I started comparing my performance to another provider in town who I know is also running Total Control, and I'm pretty sure with CT1 lines, but I don't know any technical details of their setup. On a machine in my office I've tested with both a Lucent/Agere V92 winmodem and a USR Sportster External V.92. Dialing into my own equipment I consistently get and maintain 45333-46666 connections. Not bad, but with the same phone line, same modems, same everything, when I dial the other provider, I get 49333 every time. I have some several users connecting to my equipment and getting 49333,50666, or 52000, even some using the same Lucent/Agere modems, but I can't do it myself. I have some users that might connect at 50666 or 49333 five times in a row and then get 21K the next time. The worst part of it all is that I have some users that can connect to the other provider at 49333 all day long and can't get better than 28800 dialing into my equipment. This tells me something is wrong. Both of my "live" DSP cards are doing the same things to several different users at different times. At the same time some users have really poor connections, I have other users on the same DSP card with excellent stable connections. I've tried swapping out for some spare DSP's, and got the same results. Although I didn't see how it would help, I also tried swapping out the ARC, and got the same result. I placed a trouble ticket with the Telco today, and then had the local technician on the phone while he tested both my circuits. For about 30 minutes straight there were absolutely NO errors on the CT1's. Everything is testing perfectly. One thing that worries me is my trunk settings, and although the telco tech was able to confirm my Framing and Line Coding settings for the Trunks, he had no idea about some of the other options under trunk settings. I have tried playing with the "Transmit Line Build Out" and "Receiver Gain" settings, but they don't seem to make any significant difference, unless I'm just not getting the right combination. Also - on the trunk settings, I probably have the wrong "Primary Switch Type", but have no idea what it should be. I know that the Telco CO is using an Ericcson switch, but that's all the info I could get out of them. Any idea what it should be? In addition to the slow-connection problems, I can't get any V.92 connections at all. V.90/V.42 is as good as it gets. But my understanding is that I have the right hardware and the right code to do it. So is this also maybe related to the same problem causing some users to have occasional slow connections?
