Hi guys, I read the book a few days ago and really enjoyed it. I like his style (as you might expect from his lyrics, there are plenty of clever descriptions and witty observations), and the way the book was structured: it begins with his memories of the first time he took ayahuasca, and the themes which recurred in the visions he experienced are used as a springboard and reference point for the memories, in sequence, of his life. Further to an earlier comment, the "broken music" is a reference not to the Police split, but to the reaction of his grandmother Agnes to his early attempts to play her piano and release frustration over stuff which was going on in the family at the time. There are all kinds of things which I think people will find interesting, and a good few funny moments - like someone said earlier, the introduction to the Copeland family and their activities at the time Sting first knew them is priceless. Then there's the unexpected stuff - like the recounting of an absurd incident involving Miles snr. and the Dead Sea Scrolls, or the story about having to transport a piano through the boiler room of the Oriana... I appreciated the insight and anecdotes the book provided into Last Exit and the early Police days. One thing which surprised me was how well Stewart and Sting seem to have got on at first; albiet with the competition element beneath the surface. As for the inevitable sex question: I did approach the book with some trepidation after hearing from this list about the masturbation thing. I can see why he included it - wanting, I suppose, to illustrate the relationship between religion, sin and sex in the mind of the average kid growing up then - but I also don't think it was necessary. As for non-fan reviews of the book, I looked at a few newspapers' arts/books sections, and the only reference to it that I could find was the Telegraph's page of extracts; no actual review. Still, this might be handy for people who aren't sure whether they want the book. I wonder that as well ... is this a book that "non" sting addicts will pick up and read? I asked how sales were at Barnes and Noble and she said "pretty slow". Of course I questioned that, and she said "not very good". I did get one report that they were selling them at Costco, so maybe readers of any old biographies will pick it up as well since it's highly discounted there. I'm only half way through the book---too much going on right now to devote much time to it. I do find the way he weaves his Brasilian experience into the story pretty brilliant to say the least. I'm not one for biographies, but this one is holding my interest and is beautifully written. I can't wait to get further into it. I've certainly given myself the guilt trip after reading a bit of it. The poor guy. I can pretty much say I "highly disliked" him after the breakup of the Police. Thought he was an egotistical SOB. Of course I still went to the shows and bought the CD's, but resented doing it. Now I feel bad that there were some pretty serious, deep issues that led to that persona. I certainly hope this book was therapy for him. I think it's also nice of him to reveal a small part of his personal life to us (OK, even with the gory details.) I was thinking he's been a total media whore the past 5 years, and still we never really learned anything new about him with that. He's had such amazing travel experiences, why shouldn't he share that with people who might be interested? I for one want to read a book by or about his buddy Simon from the Men's Journal/Nepal article. Enough of my pontificating. Off to read a few more pages. Happy Birthday, by the way! Hello everybody It's not in my habit to leave my personnal opinion about how I feel about this or this album , or how great it is whenSting cut his beard ( !!) ... but this morning I felt like doing this about SL . I don't want to say this album sucks , because it doesn't ... Of course I am not a fan of all these machines, but it's quite better than BND. Good songs , good vocals , and the first live performances show how goog they will be live.. What I think about this album is that Sting has definitly lost the gang thing .. Why 'Dream of the B....' , 'Nothing ...' till 'Ten Summoner' were good albums because Sting ' lived ' wth the musicians and gave them the time to rehearse and to feel the songs and their structures ...Unfortunately Kipper' was on his way .. and the musicians came after the production to fill the holes ....Too bad!! That's all ... let the album live live and don't forget to listen to previous albums and to THe Police ones ( without nostalgia of course The Police were and always will always be a tremendous good band ) and to Stewart's and Andy's. I thought the title "Broken Music" was a reference to Sting's break-up of The Police. I'm truly interested in hearing a review that goes beyond the predictable "it's really great, no make that the best book ever written. Sting is the best and amazes us once again!" type of writeup. Some of us had enough of that when "Sacred Love" was released :) Is it a genuinely interesting and enjoyable piece of writing (i.e., does it stand up on its own) or is it something that's really only for hardcore Sting completists? I've been looking, but cannot find any professional reviews...leads me to wonder if the publisher thinks it can really cross over to non-Sting fans. I received three copies for my birthday (my friends know me too well!). I'll be happy to share my impressions once I manage to get through it (it's not a terribly high priority for me right now). It's been out for some time now, but has anyone actually read "Broken Music" yet? I'm truly interested in hearing a review that goes beyond the predictable "it's really great, no make that the best book ever written. Sting is the best and amazes us once again!" type of writeup.
