Oh no! Did she? Same thing happened to Peter, Bjorn and John on Leno last week. I saw them in March, great show, but I was bored to tears and felt horrible for them when watching Leno. I think I was all stressed on Wednesday for fear of FP choking! I was like a proud momma when it was over with, it was a great performance! I just thought of another similarity.. even the song follows the (pre-Ten Summoner's Tales) Sting format for love songs. Sting talked about how he could never write a "plain" love song or something, they always had to have a love triangle or some sort of unrequited love angle. Seriously, if FP's other songs try rhyming brainiac words like "Mephistophiles" or "Scylla and Charybdes", I'll have no choice but to assume it's an intentional thing. Not that that's bad - it's almost like having new Police music after 20+ years, right? I have to start by saying that I hadn't heard FP prior to the Tonight Show appearance, and I did like the song. So I jumped on over to their Myspace page, and see a lot of awesome bands that have influenced them (with the glaring exception of The Police). In their performance though, I see a 3-piece band with a lead singer who also plays bass (hmm), a lead guitarist playing a beat-up old Telecaster (hmm, again), and the nod to early Police with the jump at the end. Joe playing bass is understandable, but I was really surprised at all of the other similarities. Intentional or subliminal?? I liked the way Joe jumped off the drum stage at the end like a certain relative of his used to do back in the day.... I genuinely do like Fiction Plane music, admittedly I don't know if I would have heard their music if not for obvious connection. I thought they did an excellent job on the Tonight Show unlke Lily Allen who a few weeks ago absolutely choked on SNL. I would like to see them make the breakthrough but who knows!!
