Totally agree, Ross. Wondering if they should just do a commemorative tour, no new stuff and make everyone happy that hasn't seen them. They can pull that off, no need to stress over trying to come up with more Police worthy material. I have been worried about what critics will say if they stay together for the long haul and be the Police again. Worried about how relevant they'll be now to the people that didn't know them as they were. U2 are still be relevant, but they never broke up. They did go off track and lose me for a while there, but the U2 I knew and liked (note the liked, not loved?) are still here. Can the Police just pick up where they left off? I'm not so sure, but they sure can make a bunch of money and make many happy w/a reunion tour. My humble opinion

Hi everyone, Just gotta jump in here with a thought or two. Yes, the stuff since MF was less quality, and for that I blame, as I have many times in the past, Kipper. Trying to hip-hop up Sting's music is ridiculous, like the time he sang with the Backstreet Boys. Ouch. (Okay, he did it for Coco. That is the ONLY reason I give him a pass on that!) Would he ever go back to the Police days? He already did. The Broken Music Tour was, simply, wonderful. Why? NO OVERPRODUCTION! And I got a taste of what it must have been like to see the Police live. So I have to say, I'm not envisioning a tour, but maybe a one-shot, somewhere in the world, to commemorate the occasion. Or maybe they'll get together privately and have a toast to their longevity, and the fact that they can still perform without looking ridiculous (like some aging rockers who will go unnamed here!). Hey, Sting is just a year older than me, but I certainly don't go around in public doing things I did 30 years ago! And no, I will *not* elaborate on that! ;-) Just my humble opinion, so please save the flames, especially since we've all been so civil since the list got active again. Have a great week, everyone! Broken Music Tour

I wondered if Sting is thinking about rocking out sometimes. I mean the Broken Music Tour kind of caught me by surprise when he announced it. Playing with more of a rock band and playing many more Police songs and by inference less Sting solo songs. That was a long tour as well - though not at big venues. To me in essence that could be construed as a bit of a step back for Sting - wouldn't you say. Maybe he is less concerned about what the critics say and doing what he wants to do. What was the marketing point of the broken music tour - he wasn't pushing sacred love really, has no new police material out etc. Yes he had the book but I don't think that tour was really that well connected and just to push the book (beyond the name reference). I think that might have been a case of the father being inspired by the son. I think seeing Fiction Plane live may have prompted Sting to want to "rock out." Sting reuniting with the Police

I feel this is actually HIGH risk for Sting. Everyone says the only reason he would do it is for money, nostalgia, etc. Some people comment they don't want to see three geriatric up there. Sting's solo career is just fine. He's outsold the Police, draws in stadiums, etc. He has no incentive to rejoin the Police which is exactly why he should. To prove the nay Sayers they are wrong. For Sting, reuniting with the Police is far riskier reputation wise, than anything he could do solo. Why? They assume it is for money or nostalgia. Because everyone thinks a new album material could never recapture the Police we know and Love from the 80's. If they could come up with another brilliant album, it would prove Sting is the greatest musician in modern times. If it is a flop, it will appear to have been a poor move. Now THAT is risky. Ross

I never thought for a minute they'd be "back, back". Figured IF it happens it all, it's sort of a commemorative farewell tour. The thought of them being "back" hadn't even crossed my mind to be perfectly honest. Don't see that happening, but would certainly be fine with it if it did! Steve - Yes!! Finally someone else who loves "A Sermon". :) Christopher - Sting says he has writer's block? Which interview is that, and what else did he say? It would certainly explain why we haven't heard anything about him writing... normally there's that three-to-four year gap between new studio albums, and by now we'd be hearing something. I thought at first that Songs from the Labyrinth and its tour was keeping him busy, but writer's block would certainly explain it. Still, considering that he came back from his last period of writer's block alright, I'm not going to worry. Giovanni - I'm still a bit confused. Toni's joke came after the note on Stingus, so that can't be why it was taken down... or is it that the joke got further than just the immediate fandom and was linked in A&M's mind was Stingus? Also, I like the list someone posted of tracks that could be put on a new boxed set. It'd certainly be better than what I read on Stingus about five new tracks... even apart from remixes that were released after the 1993 boxed set, we know there's more stuff than just those five tracks in the vaults. And heck, they should definitely include some demos - the ones that have floated around the fandom have been interesting enough to merit inclusion. And demos do sell - look at the Nirvana boxed set, for instance. The idea of their just putting five new tracks on a new release also sounds suspect. I'd buy that, too. I'm a little more ambivalent about some of the songs on his last few albums (though La Belle Dame Sans Regrets is the only song of his I can honestly say I don't like at all), but overall I'd say that the stuff Sting relegates to b-sides, or the back of his sock drawer or wherever, is probably a damn sight better than a lot of what other artists release. I'm still trying to track down a few b-sides, come to think of it. However, I suspect a solo box set is unlikely because it'd lead to all the same questions he's perhaps hoped to avoid by not playing with the Police again. If he does that now, it's because the 30th anniversary gives him a legit opportunity to do so and seem to be doing it for the fans (or even the cash), rather than because the Police was his career high (however you judge these things... it's not like he's never had big financial, critical or creative moments since then).
