I agree that Straight to my heart is a GREAT song, actually one of my favorites (I have like a 100 favorites by Sting but anyway...) The thing about STMH compared to the other 7:4's is that it has more of a 7:4 feel to it. One thing I've allways admired about Stings is his ability to disguise the odd meters so that you don't really notice that it's an odd meter 'til you listen for it. Take S.t Augustine in Hell and compare it to "Money" by Pink Floyd and you'll see what I mean. The same thing with "Seven Days", even though it's in 5:8 it got airtime on MTV, who else does that? Not even Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton had the guts (or they couldn't handle ;-)) to keep the MI theme in 5:8, and they totaly screwed that one up (I'm a great fan of U2 so don't flame me please). Actually that is the field Sting is superiour in, to take pretty "weird" stuff, like odd meters and "strange" harmonies (like the sharp 5th in "When we dance") and make them accessible to regular people. By the way "Seven Days" besides the odd meter has some really weird harmonies too, but he makes it sound great, and not unaccessible at all. Cheers, Patrik

Sam, I have to disagree on the Straight to my heart comment. That is exactly what I call a brilliant song, especially live ... I remember that when I heard it live again during the TST-tour I was astonished by the "simple complexity", something I was discussing last night with a colleague at work as well (yes, Sunday is working day as well for some Greek IT companies) ... any later 7:4 efforts were quite boring imho ... I believe this is actually an issue that was not raised before, namely the fact that Sting does not succeed anymore in delivering complex but enjoyable songs ... I hope the new album will take musical elements from DBT, NLTS and TSC, after all, those were the best albums so far ... Hi, from the last colaboration of Mr STING, the SABERA Foundation, here in Spain released a couple of promo cd singles with a nice carboard PS .Sting will be on this colaboration with a new re-version of Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot with Spanish guitarrist Vicente Amigo and the childrens of Sabera Foundation.Produced by Nacho Cano, the version is in my honest opinion another horrible Sting colaboration...the only interesting of that..another promo cd single for collectors. Sting special and contest at bbc america

While watching BBC America this morning, I saw an ad for a show called "Sting Forever" that "premieres October 19". I went to the BBC website (www.bbcamerica.com) -- I didn't find any info about the show, but they are apparently having a contest to test your knowledge of Sting trivia, and the prize seems to be a CD/DVD package. Since I have no chance of winning this, will whoever wins let me know? ;-) Have a wonderful weekend! Holly

This is about Chris Botti and his band; I fully realize this is a Police/Sting newsgroup, so I'll *Try* and keep it short... (fat chance). BTW, the "Sting" connection is in the last paragraph. I went to a free concert in the park this past Sunday in Pasadena, CA, with about ten to twelve various jazz bands, and headlining was Ray Charles. I found out that Chris Botti would be there because his previous engagement was cancelled, and Verizon needed to accommodate him and his band. The performance was excellent. He wore a light-weight white cotton long-sleeved shirt w/ black pants (ladies), and although it was in the 90s, he looked so unbelievably cool. He was able to play five or six tunes from "Night Sessions," complaining that the security made the crowd back away from the restraining gates, and taking the long way around to play in the crowd. (I got some good pics before they made us sit). He has stunning tone live, and I love the energy of the band. I am officially now a fan. Luckily, I knew the emcee, Payal Kumar, as she is a Soul Jazz DJ on K-Jazz 10pm - 1am Saturday nights (jazzandblues.org if you're interested) where I volunteer, and was able to hang out backstage. Blah-blah-blah, long story short, he signed my DVD cover (drew a miniature trumpet, too!) before the performance, and I shook his hand and took a picture with him afterwards. Talked to his drummer, too. If you haven't seen them play, you gotta check this woman out--she totally kicks major arse! Anyway, I certainly can't brag about conversation because I am one of those folks who always says _exactly_ the wrong thing, or it comes out sounding rude or stupid. I will say that he is a slight man, thin and willowy, which is amazing considering the pair of lungs on that man. And ohmigod, he is better looking, yes -better- looking, in person. **Here is the Sting connection**: He is also one of the most gracious humans, very accessible (if you have something intelligible to say, unlike me). A Verizon employee was getting a couple CDs signed for her boss, and he was explaining that Sting told him (now remember I'm paraphrasing) because his music was instrumental, it was much more difficult for the audience to relate with him. This is one of the reasons why he goes out into the crowd to stand right in front of some lucky lady to play a song, and why he does the meet and greet, sign CDs or whatever, afterward. It's one of the ways he can connect with his audience. Another brilliant Sting message, yet Chris is the bright one for not only following that advice, but for being genuine about it with his fans. He's a good man and will succeed because of it. It was a cool day! Peace, Love, and Sting, Jen "...nothing comes from violence, and nothing ever could."

the songwriters' hall of fame aired on bravo last nite, sting one of the award winners. i will be the 1st to admit that my posts here are more critical than most, if for no other reason than my personal disappointment with sting's direction (and setlists!) over the past few years. it is funny how seeing him perform makes me forget all that. the arrangement of 'roxanne' that he played at the award show was nothing short of genius, going from a latin jazz beginning to a bossa nova end. it sounded as fresh as the original. cheers to sting. i am most proud to say i am a police/sting fan today... rich __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
