M15 Stem and hull liner construction questions

I’ve got two questions about the nature of the hull and hull liner of a 1986 m15: 1) what is inside the stem? Is simply a gap between hull, hull liner and deck, or is there some kind of core or structure within? I’m thinking it is a void, and any water entering through a an exterior crack at the deck/hull joint would run down that void and end up pooling up against the bulkhead under the v- berth (where the lump of ballast is in the older boats). Or is there some kind of filling or structure in there? 2) how is the Is the hull liner in the cabin bonded to the hull? Is there any kind of material between the two? I have a section of hull liner in the very bow that flexes as if it it is unattached to the hull, and am wondering if it matters enough to drill some holes and try to rebond it. Send an earlier email with no response, so am trying again as I really appreciate this groups insights and knowledge! Alex

I found that a down ball did not serve as I alo required the ability to reef. I installed a Schaeffer Marine 350. Discoveries in the forepeak

Today I launched into a deep clean on my m15, and as I scrubbed away in the forepeak, made 3 discoveries I’m trying to make sense of. Any insights/advice welcome! 1) when I crawl way up in the bow and press on the foremost 18” square area of the hull liner on the port side, it moves, and is not bonded to the outer hull. Everywhere else the liner feels solid, with at most the tiniest crinkling sound and no give. Is this normal, and if not, what’s the best repair and how urgent is it? 2) in the very bow, under the forestay fitting/bow eye, there is a crack right where the stem meets to deck, on both interior and exterior. I’m assuming this is due to past overcranking on the trailer winch, and that I should be fixing it. Any advice on the best repair is welcome! 3) last, a curiosity more than a concern. way up on the inside of the stem in the cabin, there is a thin chalky layer over the gelcoat that scrapes off like paint. It’s the exact color of the gelcoat, so I don’t think it’s a previous owners work. Can the surface layer of gelcoat peel, or is it perchance some 34 year old mold release? When I scrape it off w a popsicle stick, it reveals nice glossy gelcoat. Thanks for any insight- looking forward to getting on the water! Alex

Both motors swivel in the notch, just. You have to cut the fuel lever flush with the case. When rotated to the reverse position I get the same thrust as when going forward, which is much better than turning a propeller backward. I can direct the thrust by rotating the motor in sync with the rudder and have become adept at "parking" dockside. I recommend you borrow one and experiment. Reliable, Reliable, Reliable! At 27 # it's the best motor for my needs. I would not hang one of those adjustable mounts on the transom. It puts the motor further aft increasing the effective weight on the transom. It neatly stows under the cockpit sole when not needed. Out of sight, out of mind. Jon Barber Monty17 Ol'44
