Well, it's a bit more,complicated than that for me Steven. I 100% agree with you...but here's the difference in this case. This race is a monumental effort mentally, physically, and financially to try and do. Yes, I would love to do "the trip itself", but if the trip was the only reason I was going, well I could have already tried it, or I could try it at a later date...and it would be at a much more relaxed pace. If I went "for the race", then yes, I'd be enjoying the trip but in a totally different way, and pushing pushing pushing ..to do my best. There for sure would be some unpleasantness associated with the physical demand of the race aspect, but testing yourself is what is all about so that's ok, to a point. I just have a hard time with entering a race that I am pretty sure I have no chance at even being competitive in, with the equipment I am able to enter with. If there were "classes" that'd change it up big-time for me. Otherwise....if I think if I was gonna make that trip...I'd want to do it much more comfortably and relaxed. Yeah, Gene would be an outstanding resource! I'm watching how this shapes up. As there are no classes and virtually no rules other than sail or human power only....I'm afraid that nothing I have access to sail would be competitive with some of the groups likely to get involved due to the $10k first prize. There is nothing for second. Right now I am thinking " if I am racing with no chance to win....then I'm, not really racing....I'm really there to experience the trip....and a MUCH slower pace than race pace would be the way to plan that trip. But....not really sure ...I keep flip flopping. If there was actuall a singlehander class and some sort of control on boat size.....like in the everglades challenge....I would be more likely to jump in I think. I've been seriously looking at this race as well. Sounds like a hell of an adventure. From what I have researched so far, it sounds like the "human propulsion" aspect can be expected to come into play in a big way. 750 miles is a Long way. Even if you could average better than 4 knots, 24 hours a day ( which you never would even come close to),,,,it would take 7 plus days nonstop...lol. Holy smokes....I thought The Border Run was long at just 100. Or so miles .... This race will test anyone that tries it.....hard. I loaded the charts and currents.....lol...yeah....expect 5 to 6 knot tidal currents in many places. Whoa! More research needed..... Sent from my Verizon 4G LTE Smartphone

I'm in my second season of summer sailing my Montgomery 17 and have been trying to heave-to so I can reduce sail. I've followed what has worked in the past backing the jib with the rudder over so she heads into the wind but to no avail. My Monty wants to slide off the wind and slip sideways losing all kinds of ground Any pointers what am I doing wrong she really doesn't like her nose to the wind Nick from Maada in Halifax

Cleaning and refinishing teak brightwork

Montypals: My teak brightwork is looking rather sorry on my M15. I think it had some kind of cetol coating on it. In any event it is quite weathered. I would like to clean it up and finish it if possible. Doesn’t need to look showroom great, but some help here. So, what is the process? Do I chemical clean it first somehow? And then regarding sanding it, I assume I mask the areas off and hand sand somehow? What is the process there, and what kind of sand paper? Finally, when properly prepped, what would be a simple coating to paint on there? I have never done anything like this before. By the way, recent short blog post in Kestrel at my usual place. Sound reasoning Sean. I 2nd your motion (as if that means anything). I'd love to do that trip as a small group cruise, pushing it a little maybe but still enjoying the trip. For me, just getting there would be a win. Question re. older M17 rudders.

New M17 owner looking for some guidance on how the rudder is supposed to go up and down. Specifically, is the rod supposed to remain stationary relative to the gudgeons while the rudder mounted fittings (I hesitate to call a pinless fitting a pintle) slide up and down the rod? Or is the rod supposed to slide up and down in the gudgeons while the rudder mounted fittings remain stationary relative to the rod? My boat came to me rigged per option 1, but the least little bend in the rod or misalignment of the fittings makes it virtually impossible to raise the rudder. I've seen photos on-line of M17s rigged per option 2 and that seems like it might be a less fussy arrangement.
