You know, I've been pulling my Montgomery 17 "Flight" for about six years now. The boat, trailer and assorted cargotta weigh in at about 2200#. I first towed it with a Subaru Outback with a five speed; it was in this car that my wife and I got considerable experience in how to smoke a clutch at the boatramp. After 16000 miles the clutch and flywheel were toasted. I've been towing for a couple of years now with a small pickup with a 3L v6 (Mazda B3000, Ford Ranger) and it handles the weight just fine. If it were much heavier I would opt for trailer brakes, but I've had no problems to speak of (excepting the time that the boat and trailer got loose from my truck (at 45 mph)on the busy transition between two clogged freeways). >>> chonshell(a)ia4u.net 04/25/02 06:58PM >>> Thanks, Harvey: That reminds me of another question I wanted to ask. cockpit drain

Is it normal to have water entering the cockpit from the drain? We sailed today and had a wonderful time - the only problem was a bit of water getting splashed up and getting our feet and the main sheet wet. I assumed self-bailing was a one way street somehow. Welcome Charles, glad you found such a "cute boat". You will find that it is not only cute, but carries with it a whole "big boat" aura. If you are looking for a place to go July 12-14, (and it's closer than Baja and Puget Sound,) come to Lake Pend Orielle, north Idaho. the NWPotters are going to be there and there will be at least one and hopefully several of the NW Montgomery owners and their boats there too. There are several in the area. Since we are fairly new to the M-15 and this group we are hoping to get to meet some new friends there. Think I will put some anti-seizing compound on the bolts when I put it back together, that is if I can remember where all the parts go! I am thinking about cutting out the well in the starboard locker to get access to that space. There were about five loose blocks of Styrofoam in this space, each about the size of a shoe box. Is this extra floatation needed? After some minor rigging changes and painting the trailer and finding some new tires I should be ready to head for the water. We DO have some lakes in Montana but they are frozen part of the year. I have trailed other boats to Puget Sound, Baja, and the Florida Keys. Hi Deena and Harvey, On my M15 I had to build a new wooden aft mast support which fits into the gudgeons. The one that came with the boat was an old tired 2 x 4 that was fine for a delivery trip (Panama City, FL to Connecticut), but was much too scruffy for me to use with my lovely new toy. So, I built a new one that was made out of a nice piece of pine with a marine plywood mast holder at the top, and is varnished. - an artistic creation, if I do say so myself. It is held in the gudgeons and supports the aft end of the mast in storage and while on the road. (with winter cover; snow loads; etc.) The forward end of the mast is held by the steel tube on the trailer that also holds the winch. You don't have to worry about the weight of the mast on the gudgeons. Assume the mast weighs 30 lbs. One half the weight is carried by the forward mount; the rest by the aft mount; i.e., all the aft mount is holding is 15 lbs. (and with winter cover and snow loads, mine held a lot more) That is about what the rudder/tiller weighs. So, you really have a non-worry. My old Aquarious 23 weighed 4000 lbs and Lenny's M 23 weighs 5800 lbs. Finding a vehicle with twice those weights is impossible. We use Ford trucks with the HD option (1 ton brakes and wheels and hubs). The new automatics in any pickup (even small trucks) is made to tow some modest weight. A trans cooler is a great idea to tow anything. Here in AZ, it's good to have a cooler on any automatic, even if you don't tow. I'd never tow any great distance with a front wheel drive vehicle. Those automatics are light duty and won't take the punishment. Sandy

Giles, My M-15 came with a stainless steel tubing mast crutch that is approx 36" long and sits in the rudder gudgeons and supports the mast in a parallel attitude, (with the mast base riding on top of the winch tower.) It fits into a 9 foot high shop door with room to spare. I doubt that I could bend the crutch without really trying, it feels pretty hefty. I wonder about (1)transporting the mast with all the weight on the gudgeons, and (2) transporting with the mast half on the trailer and half on the boat. The towing debate ... er, discussion -- my favorite M-boat topic! Here's what I've gleaned from past discussions; If your pulling an M-15 (about 1200 lbs), you can pull it with just about anything. Someone on the list even pulls it with thier Golf GTI, auto. I bought a cheap mini truck to pull mine -- a '92 Nissan with a 5 speed, 2.4 litre engine, 2 wheel drive (indestructable). Light weight trucks with smaller engines like mine will pull more with a standard transmission. The auto transmissions are too light weight for heavy pulling. And I have yet to meet a boat ramp that I couldn't conquer. In bigger vehicles, say, 3.0 litre and above, the auto transmissions installed are heavy duty and can typically pull more than standard 5 speeds. Of course, if you have a 4WD with a low first gear, then a manual transmission will work fine and its simply a matter of preference. And last, but not least, is the all important statement about being able to stop [quickly]. Any trailer and boat combo weighing over 1500 lbs (maybe less) should utilize trailer brakes. M17 drain problems

My solution to water backing up through the cockpit drain in my '76 M17 is a short piece of hose, slightly smaller than the drain, wrapped with duct tape for a snug fit. Jam the hose into the drain so a a couple of inches sticks out. This keeps water off the cockpit sole unless you're REALLY stern heavy, and, if you forget to pull it, you'll only get a couple of inches of water standing before it starts to drain. I don't know if this will work on the M17 but bigger boats have the cockpit drain hoses crossed over to the opposite side. The boat has to be deep enough to locate them below the max heel angle. This keeps them from backing up when heeled.

It is important to note that the mast-step is over an area with balsa core. I was hunting for leaks, so I decided to go after this too. The bolt holes are either 1/4" or 5/16ths". I drilled those out to at least 3/8" from the top, and 1/2" on the bottom. I then used a Dremmel tool with the saw blade to ream out a core area between the two sandwich layers. This was filled with thickened epoxy that seals the hole and serves as a compression post or plug in the core area. The holes for the mast-step were then re-drilled and bedded with boatlife caulk. At the same time, I also sealed the core area exposed by the light socket plug, which is adjacent to the mast step. Actually, I removed every bolt that goes through the cabin deck core areas (there are several), drilled the holes out oversized, backfilled with epoxy, re-drilled and bedded. This included not only the mast-step and light plug, but also both handrails, a winch, and turning blocks and cleat for the topping lift. So far, the deck leaks have stopped.
