Another M-Boat up for sale

All, I've decided to sell my M-10 #177. I have come to the realization that I have more toys then I have time to play with them. And my toy box is getting quite full. I've enjoyed the boat for the time I've owned her. She is a great little dink, easy to set up and sail. Very responsive and nimble!! When I took ownership of her, she needed some TLC. I've stripped and refinished all the woodwork. I had the sail cleaned and re-conditioned. I replaced the mast due to the PO using a homemade wooden mast. The mast is not to factory spec. It's a heavier aluminum with thicker walls. The biggest issue with this boat is the hull. The PO left her out in the sun for many years and she is showing her age. The gel coat is totally shot. This boat has severe crazing due to sun damage. Due to my skill level or lack there of...............I never attempted to spray new gel coat or paint. Please keep in mind, she is very seaworthy. And from 5 feet away, looks very salty. The hull issue is strictly cosmetic. If anyone is interested, please respond and I'll send pics. Skip

I have had her 20 miles offshore overnight racing from Long Beach to San Diego (2nd in class), on inland desert lakes, the San Juan Islands, the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Monterey (1st place 2 years consecutive in Monterey Cruiser Challenge ’11,’12), Catalina Island, and everywhere in between. I have towed her from Florida to Arizona, Southern California to Ancortes, Washington. She sails wonderfully and tows wonderfully. What she is not …is a daysailor. In other words….it takes a while to set her up and launch her. More than you would want to do for an hour or two of sailing. She is best used to put in the water for extended times (either in a slip ready to go, or for an extended cruise of at least a few days) . She is not perfect and there are some things a new owner would probably want to do to her. She could use some new cushions….and a serious owner might eventually decide to paint her topsides from the toe rail to the bootstripe. Her gelcoat can be buffed out …and I do…but it is tired. She has ridden out numerous hurricanes at a dock in her former home of Punta Gorda Florida and bears a few scars from that. Overall I feel she is in pretty darn good shape. She is ready to take you on any adventure you can imagine, and frankly….I think she is capable of more than most of the sailors that will sail her….myself included. It has been a pleasure being her custodian but we are thinking it might be time to move on. I will speak with anyone interested very candidly, be happy to share photos an info on her refit , and describe realistically her condition to any prospective new owner. Probably no other trailer sailor has had more internet exposure in the last 8 years. I tend to be a shameless self promoter and have enjoyed sharing photos and videos of Dauntless and the adventures she has taken us on , on the web. Thus…if you are interested in checking her out visually…both stills and videos of her in action…it is totally do-able. You will notice variations in her looks as the years go by as we customized her to our own liking on both the interior and exterior. Hi Ferd, my wife and I lived on boats for 12 years and I began sailing at 10 years old. My wife and I became landlubbers in '99 and it wasn't long before we were looking for a small capable sailboat to handle the San Francisco Bay and beyond...The M-17 was the choice after an extensive weighing of the pros and cons. We've owned hull 384 (1983 vintage) since 2007. I could lend M-17 experience to the article if you need more people Ferd. Love the magazine. Yours and Wooden boat are the ones we keep around here. Montgomery Sailboats are in high demand

And are built with top-notch quality. There is nothing in the market place faster, better built and as good looking as a Montgomery Sailboat. I don't run a factory; I run a very small boatshop. I built to order on a boat by boat basis. I do a lot of custom work when asked. Bronze ports, Stainless ports, extra ballast, Custom electrical systems, Idasailor rudders, anchoring packages..etc. This work is labor intensive. Quality takes time. I have 3 employees. These people are highly experienced in Laminating, construction, assembly and finish. Woodworking and other skills result in a absolutely beautiful sailing vessel. I use the best sails the best rigging, the best custom stainless fasteners..and yes....(laughing) the best cushions. This last 15 months have been EXTREMELY busy; hiring new help was impossible because all the good people are gone. We had a tremendous BACKLOG and we caught a break only when Pacific Seacraft employees (let go) began filtering into our shop looking for work. We did add some additional crew in the Laminating Shop and because of that we are caught up. Pacific Seacrafts Bankruptcy was good for us. Bad for the dozens of good people who are out of work. The FIRST question of anyone buying a new boat should be 'How is the construction quality'? First and foremost that is the most important issue. I can say that everyone has experienced and will continue to experience a BACKLOG of orders; especially if the boat is as popular as a Montgomery Sailboat. When we had an 8 month backlog and I actually turned down 2 M_17 orders so we could catch our breath. It is impossible to work any harder or any faster. Now that were caught up we can get back to our normal 50-70 days (depending on model and options). Also custom work really adds to the production time. One beautiful M_17 we did we cut the V berth out of and installed an oval bulkhead, custom shelves and inline potti area; with 4 bronze ports she is an amazing boat, but custom work takes time. Expect delays if you go radical on the interior. (I think BONES has a photo of that one...) We are really one of the only builders that entertain changes and options to satisfy the customer. This new Passagemaker M_17 were building (and installing a windvane on tomorrow) is going to be amazing. Other actual boat factories that produce boats for DEALERS (that Tod mentioned) like Precision and Compac are built on Factory Production lines for a large Dealership Network. Dealers who have these boats in stock can supply them right away. But ask for major changes on a future production boat and the wait will be many months. International Marine builds boats faster with more employees but those boats are piss poor sailers (upwind) and many arrive with a list of problems that are pathetic. That's not me. So try not to focus on the TIME factor. We can only go so fast. Hiring additional help is not an option because by the time you train someone the season gets slow and you have to lay them off. I can't do that. I have people that have been with me for 20 years; I keep us small and efficient on purpose. So be surprised if we hit the delivery time; which we do quite often. Be a little disappointed when we miss it; but get over it when you see your boat. Dozens of you know me; you've arrived to see me rig your boat, pack you up and shake your hand. (Heck...Gary Hyde even brought me a bottle of wine..!..Thanks Gary.!) One man bought a new M_15 from us and a new M_17 a year later.! The C word...Cushions. I inspect everyboat before it leaves for home. Scott's boat was leaving for the Bay Area early Friday morning; I was at the boatshop at 10:30 PM Thursday night, sleeping at the picnic table just inside the door, waiting for the cushion guy to arrive with the (late) promised cushions. He drove up, woke me up and I watched as he stacked them on the deck. We left. My man arrived at 3AM and hooked up the boat and slid the cushions inside the boat. I should have loaded them myself then I would have noticed they looked good but didn't have the required 'Squeeze' factor. Let's move on, shall we....? Fair winds Bob Eeg (949) 489-8227 Boat Builder

Core Sound Sailing-WX

Explored Core Sound in eastern North Carolina yesterday by circumnavigating Hawkers Island. The forecast was for winds of 9-11 knots. Isolated thunder storms were a 10% possibility. On the trip to the coast I noticed that the temperature was 8 degrees warmer than 40 miles inland. That's unusual; normally coastal temps are 7-8 degrees cooler in the summer. Raising the mast in winds over 10 mph can be hard if the wind blows across the beam of the boat. Although the shrouds make controlling the mast easy in a fore/aft plane they do nothing to counteract a sideways force while raising. Therefore I positioned the back of the trailer into the wind. This pushes the mast forward when lifting it & makes it easier to get the forestay pin into its hole. The 8-9 knot winds lasted only 1/2 hour, just enough time to motor through the swing bridge. As I glanced back I noticed long low dark narrow cloud systems coming across the barrier islands from the ocean. Quickly clearing the cockpit of gear that could get underfoot in a squall I put on a vest-type PFD. A few minutes later a squall blocked my view of the ramp but I got only a few drops. Three hours later I turned the corner on Hawkers Island & started to sail SE. Winds were only 5-6 knots instead of the forecasted 9-11. Sometimes thunderstorm downdrafts can counteract prevailing winds but these were low quick moving clouds in the direction of the prevailing winds. Passing the HQ of the Cape Lookout National Seashore, a large water rope formed just off a spoil-bank. 200-300 feet high & leaning forward approx. 70 degrees it moved across the Sound & passed out of sight. It had a small foot, no more than 50-60' across & could have been easily avoided under power if it was closer. I had seen a large, clear air dust devil hit a fire camp in Montana & suck sleeping bags & foam pads a couple of hundred feet in to the air but this was a first on the water (excluding low flying jet water vortices). Low winds & signs of atmospheric instability prompted me to lower the sails & motor. As I completed furling the sails, an island 2 miles away was blanketed by a "white wall". I had only a few minutes to close the hatch & get the rain gear out before the rain wall hit. Generally lasting only 5-10 minutes the white squalls are easily handled but they can cause problems. Visibility is limited so you can no longer steer by marks or shorelines unless they are less than 1/2 mile away. The force of the rain beats the wave crests down so the waves aren't useful as a tool to maintain your heading. By this time I was in a known channel so any grounding would be a soft one. After the squall there were 15 minutes of 8 knot winds. Wow! Raised the sail; got to sail back to the ramp although the last 2 miles were in winds of 5-6 again. Mike, Fionulla, M-15
